Im all for screen-less time for most of my days. My boyfriend and I deleted social media due to many relationships being compared to on Twitter with high expectations ;which ultimately harms other relationships. Not only relationships, but we found we spend so much time watching other peoples lives, comparing ourselves to others and neglecting our own time on earth. We stay with TH-cam to obviously entertain with videos but Im glad more and more people are realizing how harmful screen-time is. For him, he spends an hour on his phone, 30 minutes in the morning after breakfast, and 30 minutes before bed, and occasional texts messages throughout the day. And throughout the course of us doing this the past year it has widened our perspective dramatically and helped us appreciate not only life, but time, friendships, and family. Love your videos, I'm glad people on here can agree on these types of subjects.

  • @marisolgalono7978

I'm currently on my 11th day of social media detox because of you, Matt. Not yet close to the 30th day but I'm already getting the benefits, such as preoccupying my time with the things I love to do (e. g. working out, jogging, meditation, reading books and bible everyday, more time with my family, going to church every Sunday and of course, watching your videos lol). It really helped in improving my life, I compare myself less to other people, I build real connections and I'm starting to feel better about myself.
Keep doing quality content, Matt. You inspire so many people.

I don’t think it was because people don’t like ads I think it’s just because with the whole copy strike issue and the demonetization explosion he doesn’t want to be dependent on TH-cam for his wellbeing

    • @seansiquig
      @seansiquig 5 ปีที่แล้ว +44

Matthew Cross he’s always been doing youtube without monetization because he doesn’t want to rely on getting money from youtube. He currently lives his life without the need of it, which is great because if he ever somehow has to, youtube can become his backup income

    • @carloslaboy4279

I deleted all social media for an entire year. It was awesome, but I noticed how much time my friends/roommates/classmates spent on their phones when we were just waiting around for a movie to start, class to start, etc. or just hanging out. I’d look around and be the only one not on my phone sometimes. At first it was hard when everyone in the group is checking their social media accounts besides me... because I didn’t know what to do with myself, so I downloaded ebooks through the library and read a book while everyone else did this.. 🤷🏼‍♀️ eventually I got more comfortable with just being in the moment, but I definitely realized how much everyone else is glued to their screens.

Hey Matt, what I specifically do to reduce screen time is - I have set automated turn on and off setup on my phone, so that my phone (Android) turns on at 5.30pm and turns off by 8.30am (only during lecture day) so that I can concentrate on my studies, also I have hid social media instead of uninstalling them so that I don't frequently use social media.
I am figuring out how to turn my screen into grayscale hope I'll succeed in it. Thanks Matt.

reducing screen time is hard when your work depends on photoshop and typing using a computer but i hope to reduce my endless scrolling screen time and use that time for work that i need to get done or have been putting off. I really appreciate you provide steps big and small because a small change can make a big difference.

Android users can use two apps for minimising screen time:
    1) Less Phone - A launcher which let's you use only three apps which at a time which you can set and the phone app.
2)Daysise - This app batches different notifications which you receive notifications in batches or together. You can set the time when you want to receive the notifications.

I really like the B&W color trick. I have an Android and I was searching how to do it, and found one easy way without installing any software and that maybe works on any device (at least if you have Nougat, Oreo or Pie installed):
    1. Enable Developer options (check on Google how to do it).
    2. Search the option labeled "Simulate color space".
    3. Select Monochromacy.
And that's it. I haven't checked if you can add a shortcut, but I think that it's better.

From time to time I deactivate timeline/newsfeed on Facebook and only use messenger app for staying in touch with people. I don't know how it helps with reducing screentime as I still use Instagram and other social media sites, but for me it's about reducing the amount of useless information I get exposed to daily through Facebook. I honestly feel calmer and freer when my FB timeline is deactivated.

some small tips (more like add ons) - I used to have ALL my email addresses on my phone (private, university, even spam email address where I get like amazon delivery updates etc). I deleted all apart from private. I deleted all messenger apps apart from Telegram because my best friend and boyfriend use them (and I just like the most). The rest can either get it too or reach me on facebook (which I dont have on my phone. if its urgent they can CALL). I follow only a few people on instagram - people I am REALLY interested in. On average I only get 10 new pics in my instadeed per day so there really is no point checking in often or scrolling for ever

I found a good way to make sure I shut off the computer on time every night if the next day is a work day. I bought a smart plug and set it to turn off my PC at 10:30 pm, whether I like it or not. And since I don't like losing work, I'm sure to shut it off before that time comes around.

i personally don't have the kind of problems about screen usage like you mentioned because recently i just happened to realize that social media's all the same and regardless of the amount of pretty pictures, useful info i thought i needed to save... it's just dead boring and something's always amiss.
    and then BAM.
my phone got stolen. i forgot whatever that went through my mind earlier and simply freaked out about not having a phone, that when i faced the reality that i've been distracted with all along is that... it feels kinda lonely not being occupied and stimulated enough in public, and how everyone's been glued to their phones whenever and wherever they go... to the level that it's kind of sickening but a part inside of me just wanna be like them and it's just all messed up really @@...

Im watching this video late but here you go. I find not leaving my phone to charge before sleeping helps reduce my usage so if i wake up i keep it for charging and it reduces atleast 1-2 hours screen time. Its also good for your phones battery because according to my research, charging your phone max upto 80 is good. I dont know how to explain properly but it works!

my idea is to go back to normal traditional alarm clock - so I don't need to look at my phone as 1st thing in the morning , and as a last thing during the evening :-) it's so good when you go to sleep and you look at the person who is lying next to you instead of device , I'm recommending :-)

Looking for advice! A common tip is to keep your phone out of your bedroom and charge it in a different room at night. If you experienced something like a home break in (which I know is extremely unlikely) wouldn’t you be far safer with a phone in the same room where you sleep to call emergency services? Does anyone have ideas for a work around for this?

I spend 2-3 hours commuting from work to home and most of the time, I either have my headphones on listening to Spotify podcasts, or just leave it in my pocket (or in my bag) so in a way, I've managed to somewhat reduce my daily screentime use. It helps that I don't have a data plan so I feel no need to check my phone while on the road.
    :)
