    Dear Kyle,
    An age old Lord of the Rings debate exists between me and my friends. When the fellowship is caught trying to take the Pass of Caradhras, we see Legolas walking on powder snow as the rest of the fellowship trudges through it. So the question is, if Legolas can walk on powder snow, could he walk on water? What is the comparison as far as tensile strength?
    Sincerely, A Fan Who Needs This Matter Settled

    • @Nerdist
      @Nerdist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Alright so:
      (Assuming no magic at work) Legolas' feet have roughly same surface area as everyone else's feet (besides the hobbits). This means that the only thing to change the pressure on the snow would be his weight. If he was absurdly light, it would be less pressure on the snow, maybe to the point of standing on it (he might have to be so light it's nonsensical -- imagine putting a brick with the same surface area of a foot on some powder, it sinks right? He'd have to be lighter than that). Anyway, my answer would be being light enough to walk on powder does not necessarily imply being able to walk on water, because the surface tension of water is weaker than the cohesion among snowflakes (probably). However, if Legolas is so light that it's stupid, like a few grams, the he might be able to walk on water. But again, this is like if he's as light as a sheet of paper or something. -- KH

      Tolkien explained that elves were existing both in the undying lands and middle earth at the same time. They are not mortal beings and their abilities are only partially bound by the physical laws of the earth (walking across a very thin rope as if on solid ground is another example from the text). To specifically answer: as we see Legolas and the elves of Lothlorien using boats, we can only infer that they cannot stand run or walk on water. ...because Magic--fantasy

    But if Black Holes are *finite*, how can they be called the *Infinity* Stones?

    • @Wustenfuchs109
      @Wustenfuchs109 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Because the black hole has singularity (infinity) 'within' itself. In order to skip physics talk, black hole has this thing called singularity in which the curvature of space-time is infinite.
      Helped?

    • @MikefromTexas1
      @MikefromTexas1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aleksandar Matić Yeah, he said all that. Then he said they have finite life span and that the immense power from the Stones must come from the Black Holes within them dying. Which wouldn't make the Stones "Infinite".

    • @Wustenfuchs109
      @Wustenfuchs109 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      John-Michael Barnhill I just explained you where infinity comes from. It has nothing to do with its lifespan but the curvature of space-time.
      And a black hole does not need to die for you to harness its power. He just explained that once you destroy them there is a bang, not that you HAVE to destroy them.

    • @Clartred
      @Clartred 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You still don't understand his question.
      It was something like: If black hole can(and will) die, how can we call it 'infinity stone'?

      TiagoTiago Not likely but there is a theory black holes connect to other universes and release their gathered energy through white holes on the other side in that other universe. Black holes swallow matter and white holes realese it. The infinity stones are releasing energy so what might be inside it are miniature white holes. Or what I said earlier. You had point though.

    I’ve had an ongoing theory that our universe loops. The universe starts with a big bang. The universe spreads out further and further. Black holes bring the universe back together with gravity. The universe becomes a black hole. Something triggers the black hole to explode, causing the big bang and looping the universe. Its like a heartbeat, expanding and contracting.

      Yep, in the trailer the voice said: "Before creation itself, there were six singularities, forged into infinity stones"

    • @squirrel9544
      @squirrel9544 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And the only occurrences of singularities in our universe are found in the centres of black holes. So it's only natural to assume they are similar in some way. Singularities are points at which the laws of physics seem to break down due to the singularity's space-time curve being seemingly infinite. This is caused by gravity in a black hole but may well be caused by other forces in the infinity stones. We have never seen any occurrences of any of the other forces producing singularity points, so we must assume for now that gravity is the only force that produces this phenomena, therefore, infinity stones are black holes contained within gems.

    • @joestock7454

      assuming there is nothing else around Thor's hammer would increase its mass and by extension its gravity and the person would 'fall' onto it, after that either the hammer would stop increasing its mass to keep the person alive (staying at 1g so the person couldn't move it and wont be crushed) or would continue to increase its mass and eventually the gravity would crush the person to death.

      The Mind gem is connected to a universal subconscious, as in every living thing in the universe.
      The soul gem is connected to the underworld (Perhaps Hela will show up in Thor:Ragnarok?)
      And as for the rest? Well, the Reality gem is able to pull in concepts from alternate realities (Perhaps it is an anchor passed between universes?)!but I don't know of any others.

    • @withyouforyou6214
      @withyouforyou6214 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's kinda true. The reality gem literally gives the user the power to alter reality to their liking. As in they can change all rules of their universe. The power gem gives the user access to all power that ever has or ever will exist. I believe it also augments the other gems. It can be used as unlimited power, or if used for combat it grants unlimited strength and invincibility. The space gem allows manipulation of space so that you can appear in multiple places at once, teleport basically an unlimited distance, I think it can also create bridges linking two places by altering their distances...and...I believe this specific gem if used with the other 5 give the user omnipresence in the universe - physically being present where every particle exists..I know of these three because hood used to have them.

Logically it is just an object of immense gravitational pull, so that light gets pulled as well.. it's actually an object like a planet or a star, but just so massive, that it's not emitting nor reflecting any light... Theoretically speaking, you could stand on it, it is still from mass, am I right(setting aside spaghettification and other jokes =) )? Correct me, if I am mistaken.

    I think you mistook the meaning of singularity here.
    My thought was that it's more like mathematical singularity rather than an astrophysical one.
    5:37
    1.) If there were black hole inside the infinity stones they would require mass to be injected into them constantly or they would evaporate.
    2.) Black hole engine ≠ reality warping, mind control etc.
    3.) The singularity they have is the power they possess. Their power approaches infinity (aka a mathematical singularity.)

    • @Zb5141
      @Zb5141 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you forgot about the weight issue of having a black hole.
      The proposed black hole in the article sited below would be 0.9 Attometers in radius or 900,000,000,000,000th of a meter. It would still weigh 606,000 tonnes. That black hole would evaporate in about 3.5 years.
      In summary, a black hole inside each infinity gem does not explain: why each one does what it does, how each one does what it does, why each one does something different, how they came to be, or really anything in general.
      The black hole explanation also causes more problems with: the enormous weight, the life span of the black hole without adding mass constantly, the lack of evidence of mass being inputted into the gems, the time they've been around.
      You explained nothing about the mystery surrounding the gems and your theory is full of holes.
      ... Because Science.
      Edit: forgot to add source.

    You have a few errors in your explanations (I know they are hypothetical about comic book stuff, but still)
    First: You can't quite hold a black-hole that is the size of a tennis ball (as this was the example that you had in place) as it would be the mass of, say, Jupiter (I'm just guesstimating) so you would just get spaghettified into nothing, same with everything around you before you could even get your hands on it.
    Second: If it were the mass of something that you could hold, then it would be so small that you would never be able to find it, nor would it exist long enough for it to matter if you could find it or not as at that size point (about the size of a few atoms or so) the micro black-hole would only be in existence for a mere few billions of a second due to Hawking radiation causing it to evaporate out of existence.
    Not so Infinite after all

    • @Nerdist
      @Nerdist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      Yes, my explanation only works if the black hole is "suspended" inside the stone until the user needs the energy. Sci-fi hand-waving. -- KH

    • @andrewseliasfm7
      @andrewseliasfm7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But according to the hawking radiation, black holes evaporate faster as they become smaller , so a tiny black hole inside the stones would evaporate really fast and radiates away with a HUGE energy. or not...?

      elias andres That was exactly my Second point

    • @TiagoTiagoT
      @TiagoTiagoT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      According to this calculator: xaonon.dyndns.org/hawking/
      A blackhole the size of a tennis ball (roughly 6.7 cm diameter according to WolframAlpha), would weight about 3.78 times as much as the whole planet Earth, have a surface gravity of roughly 1.37e+17 gs (that means that number times 10 to the 17th power, or 137000000000000000 gs), a temperature (due to hawking radiation) of about 0.0054 Kelvin ( -273.14 degrees Celcius, or -459.66 degrees Fahrenheit), so it's not yet bright enough on it's own to shine in visible light; and should last for about 3.06e+43 gigayears (according to WolframAlpha, the Universe is just around 1.4e+10 years old) before completely evaporating.
      Oh, and it would only pump out about 7.0e-19 watts (7 divided by 10^19, or 0. then 18 zeros then 7, 0.0000000000000000007 watts). You definitely won't be getting any cosmic amounts of energy from the Hawking radiation of a blackhole that big; you would need something way smaller (and with a much shorter life).
      ps: I rounded the numbers a bit. To get the exact values calculated, plug the radius (3.35 centimeters) in that calculator.

    • @Nerdist
      @Nerdist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Exactly. I'm assuming that these black holes are at the very very ends of their lives, waiting to be "unleashed." It's a bit of massaging to make it work, but I think it makes at least a little sense given the singularity requirement and the real energy output. -- KH

      This is the same Universe where a hammer that can evaluate the worthiness of an sentient being can alters it's own mass or inertia to the point of becoming apparently immovable or unstoppable; they probably got the tech to hold a blackhole somewhere out there.

    Can you make a part two to this because I still don't get what the actual stones are, you said the black holes are inside the stones but then what are the stones themselves? People please share this, I want them to find this.

    Hey man I love your videos. I would like to recommend a video. In the 2003 Hulk, it is implied in the movie that the hulk pushed or kicked the F 22 into space on his "ride to the top of the world." The question you should answer is: How much force would the hulk have to assert of the fighter jet in order for it to escape earth's gravity? Because Science!
