In Italy there are some incentives for home renovation, it is called ecobonus 110. At this time it is no longer available, but next year it will be renewed and it should be an 80% contribution on many of the jobs that the house needs (including solar panels). Don't panic for Italian bureaucracy, just take things slow, and remember that here rules are flexible ;) As someone else suggested, you may want to see some Martijn Doolaard's video, who is making a similar project

In one of Martijn's videos, he passes by your house saying that just before there was a sign that read "for sale", he also says that the property had also seen it last year but did not buy it for the road too close to the property.

I love how Stella already trusts you guys and, obviously, loves having you around. She must’ve been so lonely without you! I’m so glad you guys found each other AND I’m so glad I found your channel! I found myself smiling as you were eating your roasted chestnuts while listening to the church bells in the background. How perfect!

The property is absolutely stunning. What a dream! You can always build a little house for Stella. It's like a car port but for horses, donkeys & such. That way they can seek refuge from the wind, rain & sun. Also, she'd probably love if you got her a fly mask. Naughty flies drive livestock crazy. I hope this helps.

I found your site 2 nights ago and can’t quit watching. So great you were able to undertake such a renovation on this amazing stone cottage in the mountains of Italy, you both are working so hard. Overlooking that town and hearing the church bells - just amazing! Your girls are adorable and are so lucky to have this experience. Just can’t imagine why Stella started attacking your family. Giving Stella away was the best plan at this time when you are so busy working on the property. I am a young 79 and we have renovated many properties over the years but just don’t know if we could of ever dug up the floors and removed those stones, but just can’t wait to see your results after your complete your renovation. Love and God bless, Gigi

Be aware of expanding and reshaping the house, here in Italy laws are very conservative about this (and it's a good thing, that's why it's full of gorgeous historical buildings). If you wanna go beyond just renovating stuff (like in your case expanding the balcony) you have to go through a lot of bureaucracy. If you haven't done this yet, contact asap a "geometra", he will guide you through all the procedures.
EDIT. Also public education here is top notch, and costs very little. Looking at your daughters' age, there are the "scuola materna/scuola dell'infanzia/asilo" for children from 3 to 6 years old, and the "scuola elementare/scuola primaria" from 6 to 10 years old. Surely they are present in your village given that it doesn't look like a small one. I highly suggest you send them there instead of homeschooling - if you had that in mind - in order to 100% integrate into your local community. Sure, it will be hard the first months/year due to the fact that they don't know the language at all, but they're still children, in no time they'll be fluent speakers.

How is your Italian coming? I love what you are doing! I come from Sicilian people and enjoy seeing you work on the property and heard one who has Italian heritage can become a citizen, so I dream of moving to Sicily and buying something like your house and retiring. I have my Nana's passport from 1892 when her family moved to New Orleans, winding up in Texas, then California. I live in Oregon and had a five acre special property I rented when I moved here, and dreamed of building a house. I heard Sicily needs more people that are young like your family to come and live because they are having fewer children. I will keep watching and getting ideas from your videos and appreciate what you are doing!! Congratulations!

I love watching your video and i am really happy that you choose my country as your future home.
i know that you already planned all the spaces in your house, but have you consider to make the main entrance up stairs with the livingroom and kitchen full of light, high ceiling, amazing views and outdoor space to eat on the terrace and use the down stairs space for bedrooms ? they are much darker, no many windows and they are much cosier ( perfect for the night time ) and you can have the fire place room as your master bedroom.
    buona fortuna

      I love this reply.
Being on a hill really makes things special and makes one have to change the norm. I think Americans like the view before we sleep and when we wake is why we do bedrooms so high but italians love community and the kitchen is truly the heart.

They learn fast and are better for it. i promise x Great choice on the move Mom And Dad x

Aha European chestnut no doubt is the most beautiful wood I’ve come across since I started my firewood business to make ends meet during Covid19
I’m 82 and live in rural Dundas Ontario. So far so good I knew little about wood but knew walnut was beautiful and HARD.
BUT I’ve found it’s equal hard dense with an extraordinary defined growth rings. As soon as realized it’s beauty I piled it up and forbade anyone to cut it up as I plan to make charcuterie boards. Amazing a 100 Yr old tree dead for 100 yrs and I will profit from this wood. The arborist has never seen another European chestnut and he’s ready to retire thanks cmac82

@Raising Voyagers - You should get a "Maroni Jack" to perforate the skin of the chestnuts before roasting them. The device is very helpful. The skin will then open and it's very easy to peel them before eating the chestnuts.

Raising Voyagers, we just discovered the four of you and your "summary" of the last year or so of you buying and renovating your new home in the Italian Alps foothills. We didn't watch but the first few minutes of your summary video, then we stopped and went back to when you were first looking at and trying to buy the property. Now, 2 or three videos in, your family and your relocation/renovation adventure videos are too good; we have subscribed. We are so looking forward to binge-watching the rest of your videos from now when you are just starting to do projects on your new property up to the present and then staying current with them. Rock on in your fairly mellow, definitely positive and hard to not like way. 👍🙏💪👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

The roof is new, the ceilings and floor look new. There' are no cracks in the walls, the walls are straight and you have glass in the windows and a functioning fireplace! It is a rough gem ready for polishing! I would give some thought however to that proposed office room being only accessible from the outside which is a nice idea until the bad weather arrives with snow and rain. Perhaps some sort of semi enclosed porch?

I love your wonderful project!!!! You need to be careful with Maroni (Chestnuts) picked off the ground though as they tend to become worm infested very quickly. Do this test to find out if they are safe to be eaten: simply throw them into a bucket of water - if sinking to the bottom, they are OK. If they keep floating on the surface, they definitely are worm infested.

I believe what your calling the living room was the original kitchen. The fireplace is obviously set up for cooking and the little seats are probably for watching the meal so it doesn’t burn. Also,I believe Stella was trying to communicate that it was time for her to be around her own kind. As much as she enjoyed you at first it was time to be around other donkeys. And yes that was a mushroom. 😂

It has kept me young and vibrant. Your children will grow in ways that will enhance their lives. I look forward to following your journey.

Lovely old house. Kudos to you for taking this on. We have a house built in the 1940's and we still have a lot to do in our house.

It looks like the interior walls were originally plastered and white-washed. Thus originally the rooms would have been much brighter inside. Hope that helps.

Love the church bells so softly ringing in the distance. On the subject of the water running down the side of the mountain, that will probably be a raging force in the Spring as the snow melt.

Good luck with it all🌞I am a bit worried about Stella🥺Donkeys are pack animals. She quite urgently needs a donkey friend. Pls study about how to keep a donkey. Food, shelter, water quantity, and a farrier is needed too ect ect. Maybe you know it all already and if so, sorry for intervening😊Lovely to see the affection you give her.❤

I know it might seem strange but the fireplace room is really your kitchen in old times. The two outside rooms with seperate doors were used for working rooms..or like our garages

I just discovered your video for the first time today. This is the 3rd one I'm watching. I love that you found such a beautiful place to live. If I were younger again I would do something like this myself. I'm 61 now and not handy like you. I just love the stone buildings in Italy. So many places there have such gorgeous views. Some day I hope to have a 2nd home somewhere other than the U.S. Right now we just have to get through this difficult period of becoming free from the global tyrants around the world. The best is yet to come . I love to watch the excitement of your family starting a new life. Remember you will make some mistakes ( everyone does) but you will keep improving your beautiful property and it will be very rewarding. Much love & support to you.❤
