I remember very well all the kids used to pick him at the arcade store then motherfuckas like kinda Kendrick Lamar sean in 3rd strike n made him slow n wack... suck for by boy sean
He's not a Dan storywise either, as Dan is fully grown, and has been doing this for a while, whereas Sean is a neophyte, with no formal training, yet still manages to do the moves better than Dan does.
The comparison is totally valid. Sakura learned from watching Ryu, he never trained her. Same goes for Sean, while he's considered Ken's pupil, he never really taught Sean anything. While he's not as skilled as Sakura, the fact he can even do a form of a Hadouken without being taught (even if he can only do it through concentrating, as a Super Art) shows he has similar potential.
I think it's about damn time Sean got some recognition. People say he's a joke character in canon and fail to realize he only loses from INEXPERIENCE. Not only that...but the people he's been seen losing to are exceptional fighters (Ect Ken, Ryu) and not people that are commonly bested to begin with. Despite dealing with such talent, Sean still attempts to climb to the top and just has not be shown achieving his goals from lack of more writing/character attention. He should NOT be compared to Dan - Dan is an -intentional- joke character that has been fighting since the DAYS Ryu and Ken HAVE. Sean however started training in Ansatsuken a few years just before III and DESPITE the fact that Ken didn't even teach him all that much, he makes a workable style that SURPASSES Dan. He can actually do a Hadouken and Shoryuken that's even powerful than the normal techniques even though it requires intense focus. This is FAR more impressive than what Hibiki has ever done...and what's even more incredible is that he's got a good handle on the basics in that short amount of time, even if other characters in defeat quotes tell him he sucks by comparison of them. All in all, Sean IS a brilliant character and is just someone that needs to be utilized within the series to show his trials and growth. He's not meant to be a joke - he's just meant to show that working toward a goal is not EASY and that you're not PERFECT at it when you first start out.
Once Upon A GameMaster Love the analysis but Sean is a joke. He doesn’t just lose to Ryu and Ken; Sean loses to everyone. At Sean’s age, Ken won the all American Martial Arts tournament whereas Sean didn’t make it passed the qualifying rounds and spent the time unconscious DREAMING about winning. Dan has a canon win over Sagat. Sure, Sagat let him win but a character like Sean couldn’t beat Sagat even if Sagat let him. Now let’s include his OP sister. As if Sean wasn’t suffering enough with his in game nerf and storyline embarrassment, they decided to add in an older sister who can wrestle AND control electricity like it’s NOTHING. This makes Sean’s needing to focus just to produce a hadouken and shoryuken even more pathetic as his sister has gone on an adventure to save the world and fought with and impressed Ken Masters already. I like Sean too but Capcom really screwed him as a character. Yes, canonically, even Dan would best him in a fight. And considering Sean was SUPPOSED to represent the new generation? It clearly shows what Capcom truly thinks of the people. He’s a representation that, when push comes to shove, Capcom will screw the next generation and redo the same tired character for quick profit (Have you downloaded the NEW Evil Ryu for SFV btw? 🤦🏾♂️)
I think what more of what you're doing is perfectly illustrating the shit people give Sean for shit's sake. You're glancing at the surface so quickly and making a conclusion that there's more than a few things you've overlooked. Number one is that Sean doesn't just lose to everyone. He's actually beaten Yang in 2nd Impact which people just 'conveniently' forget. And I'd wager he's beaten Ken a few times in sparring too; Ken notes in one of his quotes about reminding Sean to focus and try and take a round. That means he's likely capable of it when Ken isn't being too serious. And I'm sorry...that's a lot higher than Sagat taking what was PITY on Dan and throwing a fight - Ken is trying to help Sean ascend and get better. Sagat just wanted Dan's shit to be over because he's that fucking pathetic. And if you want to argue Ken thinks the same about Sean well...Ken literally takes personal offense to Sean not going through the qualifiers. Saying he'll get revenge (In Sean's ending) and then actually offers the trophy to Sean after he wins in acknowledgement of how well he's done in HIS ENDING. HIS. Sean was a plot point in KEN'S ENDING. That doesn't speak of Ken thinking Sean is pathetic at all. In fact that HIGHLY speaks there's a lot of potential there than anything else. Also if you don't even want to look at all of this, Sean straight up won the U.S. Martial Art tournament in Laura's ending. With a big old 'campeão' over his head. And if you wanna bring up Ken winning a bunch of tournaments like that at Sean's age? He'd been training since he was a KID up until he was hella strong in his young adult age. Sean had like four/five years max of what probably wasn't even as focused training as Ken got. So suck it. That actually makes the boy look BETTER. There's also nothing canonical stated about Dan being better than Sean. This is a lie and a joke that has been mass produced and passed around the internet for years. But there's no source. It's just people saying shit: It's just as canon if I say Mel Masters can canonically beat the shit out of Ryu as a five year old. Lastly...what does Laura even have to do with Sean and his supposed pathetic-ness? You realize she practices a MUCH different style than Ansatsuken right? It's Matsuda Jujitsu and it's form of making a hadouken (Thunder Clap) is implied not to even be PART of it's form - in fact a lot of what Laura does seems to not be; Sean bluntly calls her out for that in V! -How do you miss that, fam???- But regardless one martial art style does not equate for another, you may perhaps pick up another style easier knowing another. But that's very contextual and it's not a given. Especially in this case because Ansatsuken and Jujitsu are NOTHING like each other. But even...EVEN if you want to go here and you're not convinced...UDON (Which is non-canon to the main timeline) gives us a peek on Sean's Matsuda Jujitsu prowess. And turns out he's basically the best in Brazil - BAR for Laura who he's only not able to defeat because she's unorthodox in her style and doesn't fight in the traditional MJJ fashion. At the end of the comic he takes her advice and realizes he can't go by the book on everything. He's got to branch out and learn how to expand on the form he's been taught to improve. And then he decides to do exactly this with Ansatsuken. Which we see in the III series because he's already trying to put a spin on existing techniques. While LEARNING THEM. Sean hasn't been screwed as a character. Least not yet. He is the symbol of the journey one takes through the betterment of one's self. And I swear this was mentioned in my first comment and even Digi Valentine alluded to it. Would you rather Sean be a marty stu and just fucks up everyone and everything that gets in his way? Practically no training, but this kid out the gate just STOMPS people because he's that good? Yeah? No. That would be stupid, right? The point is that we get to see him learn. Experience. That's why we need him back. We need more of that. We need more of his struggle. He's made good strides under what are VERY HARD circumstances. There's no place to go for him, but up.
Fun fact: in 2nd Impact, you had secret rival fights. If you did well enough in the arcade mode, your character's rival would challenge you to a fight. I mention this because Sean's rival is Yang, and these rivals (like 2nd Impact) are canon. Sean is also Akuma's rival fight, although he obviously lost (Sean thought he was Ryu for a sec). Sean also wins some more battles as we see in later games. Canonically, Sean has: -Beat Pulk Hogan (a wrestler who got man after he lost a battle with Zangief, so Sean knocked him out to protect the crowd -Helped Blanka with his Blanka-chan dolls by suggesting he sell them in Japan -Won a tournament as seen in Laura's SF3 ending (she's there as a stand-in for Sean) -Was challenged by and beat Yang in a match -Is a member of his high school, and later, college basketball teams Sean actually does pretty well for a beginner, it's just that beginners often get scoffed at and Capcom has a reputation of crapping on him for no reason. I honestly hope that he returns in future games, and maybe has a Ryu/Ken thing with Sakura (it makes sense imo).
Exactly! Everything from his personality to his inclusion of his family's Jiu-jitsu fused with traditional Ansatsuken easily makes him the one new gen fighter with the most potential.
You did my favorite SF character justice. Sean represents the kid in all of us who tried to shoot fireballs out of our own hands in our backyards. He might be considered "Low Tier" however he has the most HEART out of any character in SF. Sean is Street Fighter! I love this character and what he stands for. Thanks for the awesome video, can't wait for more!
@@RyomenAyeni225 ah hello did you not play 2nd impact were he mistook Akuma for Ryu and got his ass handed to him on a silver platter bye akuma so yah get it right next time
Man, I love Sean's design. The hair gives him a much more distinct silhouette than Ryu and Ken imo, and yellow on brown is a fab colour scheme. Fantastic analysis man - I'm not hugely familiar with Street Fighter but I love the idea behind this character. :D
Thanks, man! I'm glad you've taken a liking to the show :D I just swung by your channel after reading your comment and I am INCREDIBLY impressed with your work on there. That's a sub right back at ya ~
Nice to meet another Sean fan. Despite him not being top tier, I can't help but keep using him. Each victory feels like a step closer in making him stronger, like I'm helping with his goal. SFIII had a lot of sweet characters. I discovered the game accidentally, bought the SF Anniversary game, I didn't even know there was a SFIII before that. The intro music, the style, and then I see Sean and lose my mind "A black shots?! (Although the I learned later he was Brazillian/Japanese)" the hype was real.
+Game Swap Club Can you imagine how bad he would be though, this is pre SF3. In Laura's story he hasnt even started training with Ken yet :P Still I do hope he makes it in one day
Let's just take a moment to appreciate that Sean follows up his shoryuken with a superman punch at 11:17. Not even Ryu or Ken do that. Imagine if they could follow-up their shoryukens with mid-air tatsumakis or something.
I would love to see a rivalry between him and Sakura. Sean: You know where I can find Ryu to fight ? Sakura: What for ? No one can beat Ryu-San, he's the best. Sean: What?! Ken Masters is the greatest. Sakura: Tell you what. Fight Me! If I win you admit that Ryu-San is the best. Sean: If I win, you confess that Ken Masters is where it's at... *Throws basketball away* ...Alright let's go!
Glad to see someone finally doing this character some justice! He's always been one of my fav's in 3rd strike and even though his moves are predictable I love all of em.
I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan of Sean since I'm not too familiar with him, but even I think the flak he gets is unwarranted. Imagine him returning in SFV, moves a bit more refined, his own new take on the Shoto gi like Ken and a funky new theme song to bang out as he double-legged tatsus people in the head.
+The4thSnake Lol, i actually reaaally like his double-legged tatsus, i'm not sure why people have such a problem with it NOT being a typical looking Hurricane Kick XD But yeah, he gets way more flack than he deserves. I think it mostly boils down to the fact that a lot of gamers played Third Strike as their first SFIII title and in that game Sean was nerfed to hell. He lost his cool Dragon-Punch/Slam-Dunk move as well as various other things. I'm really hoping they bring him back for SFV, this would be the perfect time for him to shine and have a second shot at winning people over!
DiGi Valentine No idea how people can hate an alternate take on a classic move when there's still two characters with the original. I bet those same people complain that he's too similar to Ryu and Ken as well.
I was hoping for a mention of his tackle into the mounted punches, that's something we've seen from like NO other shoto, the modern MMA influence unique to him, but I very much appreciated the heart and passion you put into this, very enjoyable watch. :)
+MikkoLovesGaming I could have spoken more about it, yeah. The reason i didn't want to spend too much time on specific moves themselves was mainly because i had already displayed the comparison between the Hurricane Kicks and that pretty much summed up what i had to say in regards to that. I did show the tackle move during the video though, as well as his two-handed uppercut from Third Strike and his Ryuubi Kyaku move to get the same point across, so i didn't overlook it entirely. I just had a lot to talk about and the episode was already going over 15 minutes XD;; I'm glad you enjoyed the episode regardless though, thanks for watching dude! :)
+Zero Striker Lol, yeah! I should have betted on another Matsuda! XD But that being said, now that Laura's officially confirmed to be his older sister then it looks promising for Sean to be DLC. I think Sean still has a chance to make it in.
DiGi Valentine The only issue I find is that SFV takes place BEFORE SF3, so that could rule out Sean considering his story in SF3. Who knows? They could rework Sean a bit to be a copy cat to his older sister/Ken.
If anything, i think Sean will be in this and this might be the first time he becomes inspired by Ken. Laura is the heir to the family Jiu-Jitsu style, right? That means Sean doesn't get to inherit it so maybe SFV is him deciding to go off and find a fighting style for himself, and that's when he notices Ken. If anything i think SFV is the game that will bridge the end of SF4 to the beginning SF3: Second Impact.
Mainly cause I really relate to this dude. I love martial arts, and I work my ass off to get stronger, so I adapt techniques to make them work better for me. Whenever I play this dude, I don't feel like I'm a shoto. I feel like I'm actually being thrown in to the ring with these guys. Suffice to say, I get my ass handed to me a lot but I keep pushing anyway XD
Searched TH-cam for some Sean back story and was not disappointed. You're video is as amazingly edited as it is informative. Subscribed. Cheers to the hard work you put in and look forward to more!
+Saul Hermosillo Thanks, man! I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the episode, and even more thanks for subscribing to the channel! The support really means a lot to me, cheers for choosing to stick around! :)
Bruh, don't be dissing on Dan, Dan has spirit, he may be a failure but he embodies those that tried to be masters but could never quite get it and thus got left behind. He gets up after every beating and keep trying despite his methods not being what people would call effective and through his stubboness continues to grow. If it wasn't for his kind spirit then he could probably do the Satsui-no-Hado like Akuma since he almost did it on Sakura before tripping on her school bag. Dan is a symbol to players who like Street Fighter but never got good like me bruh.
Patience, son. The fact that he appears in the story and the fact that they decided to create another character who is linked with him, strongly suggests he will be back.
+Daniel Tchernov Its because they realised the game too early man. So many things were not ready to be at launch. Which is why i feels so bare to most people. Apparently, they did that so it can be just in time for a tournament or something. They had limited characters in vanilla SF4 too.
Bro it be really cool if in Street Fighter 6 that Sean made his own fighting style combining stuff from the Ansatsuken, Matsuda Jiu-Jitsu and basketball. Imaging him having a projectile where he it shoots it like a basketball or it bounces on the floor and maybe it has electric effects similar to Laura's. he could have 2 grapple counters or grabs that reflect that. and maybe is Special Attack could involve a combo ending with him dunking someone into the ground
I think it simply comes down to the fact that people love an underdog story. Someone who wasn't necessarily born with or given the right stuff but overcomes incredible odds through struggle and determination. That's the hallmark of a good character in any spectrum in my book.
+DaUsher I feel like Laura might envy Ken due to the fact her younger brother wants to train with him and not her. Sean: Ken is so cool ! I want to train with him ! Laura: Hey your big sister is cool too... Sean: Ken is way better than you ! Laura: :( (I'll just have to prove you wrong by defeating Ken)
You earned a new sub. I always liked Sean. Not just because he's a Black-Brazilian that loves basketball but he is an original character. His flaws make him a great and realistic character. You are brilliant. Thank you.
I wouldn't necessarily say that, since I would assume that the momentum coming from using the spin kick is literally like a hurricane of kicks coming at your face.
I always thought it was a damn shame that not many people felt Street Fighter 3's cast- well, no, the whole miniseries of games entirely, let's be real- back in the day. In part because it's clear just how much work went into the games (some absolutely gorgeous spritework and animation on the character and backgrounds, excellent music across all three iterations thanks to industry legends Yuki Iwai and Hideki Okugawa- Third Strike in particular is an absolute stand out as far as it's soundtrack goes, and DAT SUBLIME GAMEPLAY M8), and in part because it figures the one time Capcom gets brave enough to shead some of the dead weight in terms of plot and cast from prior entries in the name of new horizons and possibilities, people who couldn't accept that times had changed pissed and moaned the series in to damn near hypersleep for just under a decade. //SOAPBOX I'm surprised to hear Sean has something of a hatedom, 'cus he always struck me as a unique character among cast of characters that were unique or interesting in their own little ways. That he so embodies the idea of the series is something that only furthers my disbelief at the fact that he isn't at least SLIGHTLY more popular then he is overall, 'cus shit, even outside of the specific context his drive and determination to be better at what he does is something I think is extremely relatable for everyone. C'mon, SF Fandom. Give Sean a chance.
+DeconTheed92 I do agree with ya, the SFIII series is probably my favourite out of the lot. It just did so much and did it so well without ruining what had been established before. It managed to build upon the series smoothly with wrecking the foundations. Other fighting games tried and failed to do this successfully (case in point, Soul Calibur V ...much to my absolute heartbreaking displeasure). I think peoples problem with Sean mostly boils down to the fact that Third Strike was the version a lot of people played first and Sean was nerfed as fuck in that version, so opinions of him usually initially stem from how he played as a fighter. But as a character with personality and backstory he's brilliant. It's why i hope to see him in Street Fighter V, i believe he has way more to give and we've only scratched the surface of this guy.
DiGi Valentine I'd argue the SFIII series was probably my favourite of the lot as well, were it not for the EX series, so I can definitely relate. And I absolutely agree; there is more Capcom can do with Sean and his arc- arguably more then even some of the CORE core Street Fighter characters- so I'm vying for him too, just out of pure "I want the underdog to get a break"-ness. I mean I admit Oro would be cool to see (because it's fucking Oro), but yeah, fingers crossed for Sean.
oh my God thank you for promoting Sean, I've been saying since they've announced stfv, that I'm hoping that Sean will be there because he's my favorite character, and people always say that he's just another shoto, but he brought us the first ground n pound, and like you said he can't continually throw Hado kens, he must earn them as a special move. he's without a doubt a warrior in training, he's not a full grown man like Dan Hibiki is he's still a kid, learning more and more along the way, I would love to be able to play as Sean, I don't even have a playstation 4 yet, I've still got an x box one, but I've been wanting a playstation 4, and I've saved $736 of spending money that my girl is allowing me to keep, to buy my playstation 4, with for good behavior
Great video! I'm a huge fan of Sean (He's in my top 3 favourite characters) and it really feels like I'm a one man army when I try and defend him. Your retrospective on Sean was fantastic, so I'm looking forward to seeing your videos on Street Fighter characters! Sean for Street Fighter V!
The character I used to get my bf into retro street fighter. He loved Sean from the get go and used to have the same hair and a similar appearance to him except Caribbean and much darker. He also was a basketball player and still loves the sport, along with a love of fighting.
Wtf Sean is awesome he was favorite streetfighter character when I was a kid in 1997 so of course this new generation wouldn’t understand how cool he is
Whenever my friend's and I would play Street Fighter my friend Brandon came up with a name for such a hairstyle. He dubbed is the "Dreadhawk" Also regarding his moveset I always thought he was emulating each of Ryu and Ken's attacks but at the same time emulating cool breakdance moves! It looks as if he shifts his weight to keep his balance with each individual attacks which some breakdancers do as well. At least that's what I think. Great episode dude! I look forward to more!
+HerpDerpWalrus Dreadhawk!! Brilliant, haha! That's a perfect name for it! XD As for his moves, i do feel some of his movements lend themselves a little to Capoeira, like his Ryuuki Kyaku over-head kick. That move kinda looks like it came out of a breakdance motion. I actually wanted to elaborate more on that in the episode but i was unsure and didn't want to head-canon things too much, lol. Plus, i felt i should save the 'breakdance fighting style' discussion for when i eventually make the Elena episode! But i'm glad you think the same things for Sean. He's a very expressive guy indeed, he's a great character to watch in combat either way!
Talking about the Street Fighter characters in your videos makes me more amped up for Street Fighter V! Look forward to more in depth Street Fighter characters from you man. Another good video!
+Vytis Leonavicius Thanks ya, man! I'm so hyped for SFV, it's killing me! XD I'm not even that great at the games, i just love how much effort goes in to creating such memorable and diverse characters. If Sean is announced for this game though i swear i'm going to try to main him. I very rarely say that, lol. But i will try!! XD
+DiGi Valentine Yeah man I feel like SF characters are more in depth with personality and fighting style. All tho I'm not a beast at fighting games, it's just so fun to play them!
I really hope ur channel takes off, it's soooo good in terms of informing the audience who characters are from different franchises. Good narrating, jokes aren't to bland and immature, the editing is dope as well. Bro you got potential. Make it big bud
+KaiserChiefs Thank you greatly, man! I'm glad you think so highly of this show and what i'm doing with it. They say a TH-cam show usually comes in to it's stride around the 2 year mark, and i've been making Who Dat for about 5 months now so i got a bit of ways to go until i'll know for sure if this has worked out for me. But so far, having supporters like yourself has really helped me stay consistent with it. I appreciate the words of encouragement. It really does go a long way! Thanks ~
Capcom should bring Sean back in SF6 as dlc, give him a glow up where instead of trying to imitate Ryu and Ken styles he can embrace the fighting style he created and living his best live trying to best.
Wow!! WOW!! I mean dang, I never batted an eye at this character. Ever. You've really, really changed my perspective on him. Now, I'm really hoping he gets added in SFV.
+I Hate Video Games This is what i like to see! ^_^ Thank you for watching this episode and having your opinion on the character changed! I'm glad i could have done Sean this service! Thanks so much for watching. I'm really grateful!! :)
Don't even know if you still check Vids this far back, but I was on a Sean kick and came across it, loved the Vid and it was great to see you put that level of detail into exploring Sean as a Character, but there is something you missed. Respect for the Character, in the New Generation Sean was the 'New Kid' Ken felt like he was a tag along, and didn't really like him but he did see the potential there, his moveset and abilities were unrefined but he was still a good character. 2nd Impact came out, Ken tries to get rid of him and sends him after Ryu, but we see the determination, we see that he won't STAY down, against even the impressive power of someone like Ryu, his skills get a polish up and he's literally a top tier character in Tournament Play..... Then 3rd Strike comes out, Sean's moveset has.... changed, one thing for the better, a bunch of others suddenly have frames upon frames more making easy to parry and punish, he loses the second strike to his Uppercut, he's hobbled and is now literally BOTTOM Tier in the Tournaments. Also any and all development, acknowledgement of his determination, and the seriousness of his character, is jobbed to him getting stomped by some random fuckhead in man panties in the PRELIMS of a NATIONAL fucking Tournament, when he literally just got off facing some of the worlds strongest, and holding his own, now he's a fucking joke character? What happened? Why did he get such a downgrade between two versions of the same game? Balancing? Retooling that didn't work out the way the developers planned? Nope... One word.... Sakura. Or to be more fully accurate Sakura FANBOYS. See, ever since Sakura appeared she's been a HUGE fan favorite, and while she didn't make the transition from the Alpha's to SF3, people were content to imagine that at some point Ryu was going to train her and have her be the Successor to the Style.... Then Sean makes his appearance, and the idea that KEN's Disciple is the future of the style, well that upset some of them.... But it got worse when a new craze hit the Internet, a 'Make your own Fighting game' program called M.U.G.E.N It let you take sprites from other games and put them together in to face off, and this was it, this was going to be the vindication, that a good Sakura Player could stomp any Sean player because she was the 'better character/fighter'.... The result? Sakura LOST. Sakura lost BIG time, Sean's style and moveset in 2nd Impact let a skilled player almost dominate Sakura players, basically answering the question beyond a doubt who was the 'Better fighter/character'... And they LOST IT and created such a backlash that Capcom freaked at the potential loss of fanbase for a character who at that time was doing better with cameo and merchandising than almost any other Female Character in the roster, this includes Chun-li, Cammy, and the recently added Elena and Ibuki, why? Because the School Girl Fighter Trope is HUGE in Japan and she was well loved. Thus to assuage their feelings that she was the TRUE successor, and better fighter, etc. They completely sabotaged Sean in the next iteration of SF3 3rd Strike, making him go from a determined and growing character to a pathetic punching bag to be shit kicked for comedy in his own ending. Gone is any of the rage and determination of the, "I wasn't concentrating, I need to Train HARDER!' Instead it's a teary eyed smile, "Oh well, maybe next time, *A-HYUCK!*". And that Lack of Respect for the Character that carried on all the way to SFV as they decided to leave him on the cutting room floor to make room for his Sister, but STILL put him in the game as a pathetic whiny child just to make sure there's NO chance of anyone considering him a viable option to ever be a respectful candidate in Canon to be the successor to Ansatsuken.
Yes Finally A Video About Sean Matsuda!! Thanks Digi Valentine!! Now Capcom STAFF Please PAY Attention Sean Has A Huge Fan Base!! SFV Needs This Guy With More Awesome Moves!! Hopeing He Will Be In Second Wave Of DLC!!
you know, I've never played much street fighter, but I think I'm gonna have to now! there seems to be much more story than I originally thought as a kid. I really enjoy the videos on the Street fighter characters you do. another great video Digi!
+Becky Erickson Thank you so much! Street Fighter might not be everyones cup of coffee/tea and some of the previous games didn't really have much of the story 'within' them, you had to get them from external sources. But if you ever find yourself becoming interested in Street Fighter then word has it that Street Fighter V will have a pretty heavy story driven element to it. If it does then it's probably the best time to get in to the series (and it's also one of the reasons why i hope Sean is in it as it'll be the perfect opportunity for him to gain a bigger arc and grow). In any case, thank you SO much again for watching an episode on a character you knew nothing about! That means a lot to me, thank you!! ^.^
+DiGi Valentine I tend to like watching Who Dat about characters I'm not too familiar with, that way I can find more stuff I might like. Not to mention you know I gotta keep up with your stuff, Digi! Your videos are different than your typical "gaming" youtube stuff, and it looks like it take a LOT of work to make these vids, which I appreciate and value a lot. :-)
I like Sean, not a huge fan but I thought he was a good character that fit well in the series. I also feel the same way about the character as DiGi Valentine does, he's no Dan Hibiki because Sean has potential to become a good fighter, I'm sure Sakura and Ibuki were at the same skill level as Sean was not long before they appeared in the series. Dan is a joke but Sean is just a rookie, big difference there and now that his older sister Laura has made an appearance in Street Fighter V, it only adds to his potential as a great fighter in the making.
Man I'm so glad I discovered your channel! Your analysis of these characters are damn near meticulous. Your enthusiasm also helps. You deserve more subscribers!
this actually mirrors how I've always felt about Sean. if I was at capcom and had the free licence to do a street fighter game, It'd have Sean and Sakura at the lead and... MAYBE Ryu as secret non-playable boss that gets DLC-ized, but it disheartens me SO much every time I see a FGC goof go "But what about Sagat. :C" or some garbage like that. Outside of super secret Ryu, I'd make an effort at at least... one character to represent each sort of series from there MAYBE. An Adon who's at the top of Muy Thai finally, maybe an older T-hawk looking like he's getting on in years, Maki, and then I'd try to leverage some of the SF3 cast a bit like Alex and maaaaaaybe Makoto, Necro, and Q? maybe El Fuerte and C-viper too before we get into the Menats and Karins and... maaaaaaybe Ed. maybe. Already, this is sounding bloated, and maybe a fair bit of these would be the DLC, because damnit, the street fighter game I want in my heart of hearts IS the New Generation experiment, but done right. Removed from the Illuminati and Shadaloo alike. I want new villans, new fighters, new stories to take center stage, with a game designed with high skill ceiling in mind and balance for the sake of actual balance and not just mixing up faces on the top. I want a comeback mechanic that is tied to skilful play if we're going to put one in. I want a group of fresh faces that usher in Street Fighter as the gentleman's game again. ... and maybe Sniper Joe as a fighter. that'd be pretty rad.
Çok havalı! I dug this a lot. I usually kind of hate these videos, but this was well reasoned and the enthusiasm for a unfairly maligned character shows how smart Capcom was with the SF3 character design, even in spite of its fanbase just wanting more of what they were familiar with.
Yoooo, I really appreciate this video. Sean is literally one of my favorite characters in the Street fighter universe. And I sorta have his look, so that's sort of a plus for me. Heck, I even made a video recently about what he would sound like in English.(Even though I'm not a professional VA. I think I did okay-ish)
THANK YOU Sean isn't anything like Dan.Dan is a mediocre fighter convinced that he's awesome Sean KNOWS he's not as good as he could be but he's determined to get there.
Sean is to Ken as Sakura is to Ryu -- an unsolicited pupil. The difference is that Sean has a more realistic learning curve, compared to Sakura who can win fights with practically no formal training, merely by observing other people's fighting style. It's for precisely this reason that I've never been a fan of Sakura, whom I'd otherwise be predisposed to like because she's a cute girl who's earnest and has an exuberant personality. In a universe filled with implausible characters, Sakura is the most implausible of them all. There's no logical reason that Sakura should be as good a fighter as she is -- it's all put down to her "fighting spirit".
In Sakura's defense though, she has a bit of a grounding strike in Rival Schools. And She's lost a lot of Streets Fights too. Design and Moves wise they both integrated and personalized the Original moves of Ken and Ryu. That's what I like in them.
+amongallothers - Yeah, i actually agree with this. Especially 'New Generation' with it's different times of day per Round. Some of the stages looked gorgeous at night.
I should note that Capcom retroactively incorporated some Matsuda Jiu-Jitsu into Sean's moves by establishing them in Laura's moveset (Sean's cartwheel, for example). This implies that Sean partitioned in Matsuda Jiu-Jitsu before seeking out Ken.
+killa_byte007 No problem! I'm very glad you liked the episode, and i'm happy to hear he's your favourite character too. He definitely deserves more love!! Thanks for watching :)
+TheMaskedTempest A lot of people did. Also, we don't have any idea what happens to Laura in SF III (NG, 2nd-I, or 3S) afterwards. She's only existing in SFV...and as a side note, LOVE the Elliot Edwards NiGHTS reference.
They did him so dirty throughout the history of Street fighter. Nerfing him and making him essentially a joke when as a child I got extremely excited to see this new character with a ethnic background carrying on the legacy of Ryu and Ken. I'm predicting that he will be on Street fighter 6. And hoping that he's mature and not a joke
I’m more irritated with Sean’s storyline more than anything else, and his move set. It easy to forget that even though he does Shotokan, he comes from a BJJ family (which isn’t seen at all in his move set). Also, his style shows a fusion between his karate and capoeira, yet he follows Ken around like a lackey. At some point, I really believe that Sean should be under the tutelage of Deejay (a champion kick boxer that did defeat Sagat). The mix of this and moves from his family’s style would be amazing to see.
Man I need to follow Sean's philosophy it sounds awesome he sounds way better than his older sister who actually got into SF5 hopefully he makes it to SF5 though I'm not sure when. Same with Akuma I hope he makes it as well
i love Sean....kens student, playz basketball, ill hair....plus he can shoryuken, taisumaki-senpkyaku can even haduuken at times...i was hyped for this character when he was coming out
Anybody who calls Sean a "Dan" clone probably doesn't remember when Sean was top tier in 2nd Impact.
“Don’t call me Dan!” I hated how they nerfed him in 3rd Strike, especially with his Dragon Smash.
Amen.
Except Dan can actually use a fireball without burning super meter, with one hand. He can't throw it far but at least it works.
You know, I've always thought that Sean was more like Sakura rather than Dan
+Gabriel Hernandez
I'm surprised there isn't a Akuma fan that tries to mimic the style
The comparison is totally valid. Sakura learned from watching Ryu, he never trained her. Same goes for Sean, while he's considered Ken's pupil, he never really taught Sean anything. While he's not as skilled as Sakura, the fact he can even do a form of a Hadouken without being taught (even if he can only do it through concentrating, as a Super Art) shows he has similar potential.
***** If I was a Street Fighter character I'd try to be like him. He freaking awesome even though he's crazy.
*****
For my ultimate it would be similar to Akuma's Raging Demon, but the difference is I do a barrage of green ghoul looking energy punches.
I hope sean gets some his sisters powers mix with his shoto style.
I mean, well made argument and all. But maybe a little too enthusiastic. Just a little.
Sean isn't brilliant. He's braziliant! But capcom ruined him😢
Damn you made a whole story outta this
Fun fact: in 2nd Impact, you had secret rival fights.
Canonically, Sean has:
-Beat Pulk Hogan (a wrestler who got man after he lost a battle with Zangief, so Sean knocked him out to protect the crowd
-Helped Blanka with his Blanka-chan dolls by suggesting he sell them in Japan
-Won a tournament as seen in Laura's SF3 ending (she's there as a stand-in for Sean)
-Was challenged by and beat Yang in a match
-Is a member of his high school, and later, college basketball teams
Sean actually does pretty well for a beginner, it's just that beginners often get scoffed at and Capcom has a reputation of crapping on him for no reason. I honestly hope that he returns in future games, and maybe has a Ryu/Ken thing with Sakura (it makes sense imo).
Sean is easily the most unique Shoto. It's BECAUSE of his improv style that I find him to be the most fun and my favorite of the bunch.
Exactly! Everything from his personality to his inclusion of his family's Jiu-jitsu fused with traditional Ansatsuken easily makes him the one new gen fighter with the most potential.
"I'm banking on either Oro or Shaun."
*Laughs in Laura*
You mean Sean instead is Shaun, right?
its crazy oro is in sfv now

Dude, I think you've done a lot more justice to Sean in one video, than Capcom did during most of Street Fighter III.
+Neostar Productions Sean may be back, his sister is in SFV
+Bruce Leeds That is true. We can only hope. :)
+Bruce Leeds Unfortunately, Sean's too young at this point. The dude's surfing the Internet trying to find himself.
+Neostar Productions he was super good in Second Impact, I wish they left him like that for 3rd Strike
+MarioSinglePlayer he should be the same age as in third strike
You did my favorite SF character justice. Sean represents the kid in all of us who tried to shoot fireballs out of our own hands in our backyards. He might be considered "Low Tier" however he has the most HEART out of any character in SF. Sean is Street Fighter! I love this character and what he stands for. Thanks for the awesome video, can't wait for more!
Sean is like Ryu when he was younger. Who was also constantly getting schooled but eventually got stronger due to will, determination and hard work.
but unlike ryu sean isnt battling a deamon

Man, I love Sean's design. The hair gives him a much more distinct silhouette than Ryu and Ken imo, and yellow on brown is a fab colour scheme.
Fantastic analysis man - I'm not hugely familiar with Street Fighter but I love the idea behind this character. :D
+ShayMay Cheers, mate! He's a true underdog character, i sometimes find myself being drawn to them more than the main heroes! XD
These are all fantastic! I've been marathoning Who Dat? all night long and you definitely have a new subscriber!
Thanks, man! I'm glad you've taken a liking to the show :D I just swung by your channel after reading your comment and I am INCREDIBLY impressed with your work on there. That's a sub right back at ya ~
The yellow suit may also be a nod to Jim Kelly
+Bruce Leeds - YO! Oh my god, that's a great observation! Why have i never noticed that before?! Damn, i wish i had mentioned that now. Good call! XD
Now I'm even more salty he's not in 5. Just imagine his win quotes! "You lost already huh? I was too busy looking good!"
+biohazard724 Meh, I was thinking "So what if you lost today! Get up and win tomorrow!"
Man, he came straight out of a manga panel!
+Bruce Leeds you're good. def 100% right
Nice to meet another Sean fan.
Too bad he isn't in SFV. Hoping he will be in the DLC. Please let him be in the DLC!
+Game Swap Club Can you imagine how bad he would be though, this is pre SF3. In Laura's story he hasnt even started training with Ken yet :P
Still I do hope he makes it in one day
Haha yea
+ktay95 Laura also gets the iconic outfit as her Alternate Costume...I'm sad now.
+ktay95 Wait how's SFV a prequel? Nash is in and back from the dead so wouldn't that make it a sequel?
+thatsmokerwasme fucked if I know how it all works man... maybe they'll explain it in the proper story but probs not
Let's just take a moment to appreciate that Sean follows up his shoryuken with a superman punch at 11:17. Not even Ryu or Ken do that. Imagine if they could follow-up their shoryukens with mid-air tatsumakis or something.
This made me changed my mind about Sean. Now I want him to be in streetfighter 5 too. If we can't have Sakura then give us Sean.
Don't worry bruh. We're DEFINATELY getting both of them. Count on it.
+RikXtreme4 I hope so cause I want my girl back and hioe that Sean is good again.
*Throws basketball away*
...Alright let's go!
Princesoulger when sean gets released, hopefully that interaction happens in his story.
+Princesoulger That is so cool. CAPCOM please make that happen!!!!
Glad to see someone finally doing this character some justice! He's always been one of my fav's in 3rd strike and even though his moves are predictable I love all of em.
I've always thought Sean was freakin cool. He has such a unique take on the antsatsuken fighting style and shows so much promise to be a successor.🔥🔥
Yeah, he gets that criticism a bit despite having a completely differently working move-set to them. Shame, really.
DiGi Valentine How would you want his design to be altered like Ken's was?
+DiGi Valentine
Most people also pull the double standard for Sakura and give her a pass, but for Sean nope.
I was hoping for a mention of his tackle into the mounted punches, that's something we've seen from like NO other shoto, the modern MMA influence unique to him, but I very much appreciated the heart and passion you put into this, very enjoyable watch. :)
+MikkoLovesGaming I could have spoken more about it, yeah. The reason i didn't want to spend too much time on specific moves themselves was mainly because i had already displayed the comparison between the Hurricane Kicks and that pretty much summed up what i had to say in regards to that. I did show the tackle move during the video though, as well as his two-handed uppercut from Third Strike and his Ryuubi Kyaku move to get the same point across, so i didn't overlook it entirely. I just had a lot to talk about and the episode was already going over 15 minutes XD;;
I'm glad you enjoyed the episode regardless though, thanks for watching dude! :)
>I'm betting it's Sean.
At least you get the character somehow related to him, Laura. RIP
You speak for all of us.
Sean's hurricane kick looks way cooler than the real one.
Man did Sean miss the bus for 5. Here's hoping Sean makes it in on that first DLC train for 6 tho.
*PUT HIM IN STREET FIGHTER 5!!!!*
Patience, son. The fact that he appears in the story and the fact that they decided to create another character who is linked with him, strongly suggests he will be back.
YES PUT HIM IN STREET FIGHTER V
So y did capcom make less characters?
What are they aiming for
+Daniel Tchernov Its because they realised the game too early man. So many things were not ready to be at launch. Which is why i feels so bare to most people. Apparently, they did that so it can be just in time for a tournament or something.
They had limited characters in vanilla SF4 too.
Careful what you wish for.
That's what I was thinking him making his own fighting style mixing his own moves with mastuda jujitsu and basketball would be dope
I think it simply comes down to the fact that people love an underdog story. Someone who wasn't necessarily born with or given the right stuff but overcomes incredible odds through struggle and determination. That's the hallmark of a good character in any spectrum in my book.
With the reveal of Laura Matsuda as Sean's older sister, I wonder how much more fleshed out he will be.
+DaUsher
I feel like Laura might envy Ken due to the fact her younger brother wants to train with him and not her.
Sean: Ken is so cool ! I want to train with him !
Laura: Hey your big sister is cool too...
Sean: Ken is way better than you !
Laura: :( (I'll just have to prove you wrong by defeating Ken)
I really want to see an interaction between Sean & Sakura, & watch them talk about how Ryu & Ken teach them
You earned a new sub. I always liked Sean. Not just because he's a Black-Brazilian that loves basketball but he is an original character. His flaws make him a great and realistic character. You are brilliant. Thank you.
Wouldn't switching legs create more wind and make him faster and stronger?
+Dympna Varma Yeah, but it seems to take more effort.
//SOAPBOX
I'm surprised to hear Sean has something of a hatedom, 'cus he always struck me as a unique character among cast of characters that were unique or interesting in their own little ways.
That moment when u realize that Sean is Laura's brother...
+Snik /XZ Why state your comment like it was a sudden realisation mind fuck, when it was mentioned in Laura's reveal?
oh my God thank you for promoting Sean, I've been saying since they've announced stfv, that I'm hoping that Sean will be there because he's my favorite character, and people always say that he's just another shoto, but he brought us the first ground n pound, and like you said he can't continually throw Hado kens, he must earn them as a special move. he's without a doubt a warrior in training, he's not a full grown man like Dan Hibiki is he's still a kid, learning more and more along the way, I would love to be able to play as Sean, I don't even have a playstation 4 yet, I've still got an x box one, but I've been wanting a playstation 4, and I've saved $736 of spending money that my girl is allowing me to keep, to buy my playstation 4, with for good behavior
One of the more underrated guys, shame he's stuck in III and never used again

Superbat505 and they say he is the worst character there.
Whenever my friend's and I would play Street Fighter my friend Brandon came up with a name for such a hairstyle.
He dubbed is the "Dreadhawk"
Also regarding his moveset I always thought he was emulating each of Ryu and Ken's attacks but at the same time emulating cool breakdance moves!
XD
As for his moves, i do feel some of his movements lend themselves a little to Capoeira, like his Ryuuki Kyaku over-head kick.
I'd love to see some chemistry between Sean and Sakura.
Talking about the Street Fighter characters in your videos makes me more amped up for Street Fighter V! Look forward to more in depth Street Fighter characters from you man. Another good video!
+Vytis Leonavicius Thanks ya, man! I'm so hyped for SFV, it's killing me!
Sean was awesome I hope he gets through in the new sf
Thank you SO much for covering my favorite SF of all time! You sir, have earned my subscription.
Wow!!
Urien, Alex and Sean are my favorites SFIII characters, great video man :)
PLZ PLZ PLZ PPPPLLLLLZZZZ CAPCOM! ALL I NEED is HIM IN SFV! and I WILL GO APE SHIT!!!! will find out this coming week soon guys !!! ^_^;
+Anthony Aguilar And your rage continues to manifest with the passing of each day you see his sister...
Michael Rivers i KNOW I KNOW~! all i and do is Pray and Hope for DLC now.... -_-;
Yes Finally A Video About Sean Matsuda!!
Thanks Digi Valentine!!
Now Capcom STAFF Please PAY Attention Sean Has A Huge Fan Base!! SFV Needs This Guy With More Awesome Moves!!
Hopeing He Will Be In Second Wave Of DLC!!
Didn't know anyone had a problem with Sean but what you did here just elevated this character for many who's perspective of him were already on a high
you know, I've never played much street fighter, but I think I'm gonna have to now! there seems to be much more story than I originally thought as a kid.
This video helped so much! Please make more videos!
your videos have so much style to them. you deserve 50 times as many subscribers. keep it up man
I like Sean, not a huge fan but I thought he was a good character that fit well in the series.
Please Capcom! Bring back my baby boy Sean!
I want a group of fresh faces that usher in Street Fighter as the gentleman's game again.
... and maybe Sniper Joe as a fighter. that'd be pretty rad.
happy birthday sean!!! :3
How-do-you-do-Ken. The rest of your video could've been shit. But that one line instantly won you my like. Like seriously. Good work mate.
How do you feel about Sean now that his story was fleshed out more in V?
Digi, you never fail to make me laugh so hard during an episode of "Who Dat?" Keep 'em coming man! :D
+Saisha Greene I'll try my best! XD Thanks for watching again, Saisha! ~
And also MY GOD the background stages in The New Generation and Second Impact are VASTLY superior to Third Strike's.
+amongallothers - Yeah, i actually agree with this. Especially 'New Generation' with it's different times of day per Round. Some of the stages looked gorgeous at night.
yup glad somebody noticed the only things that was kind of messed up about it was the voice acting with sum of the characters
Which character best represents this mentality. He points at the computer. I never new that a computer was a street fighter character.
Sean got redesigned for Street Fighter V (which makes sense, he's only around 16 during the events of SFV).
Yes Sean!!! Yes THanx you! OMG MOST FAV CHARACTER IN SF YAY!!!
+killa_byte007 No problem! I'm very glad you liked the episode, and i'm happy to hear he's your favourite character too. He definitely deserves more love!! Thanks for watching :)
...I actually wanted Sean more then Laura...
+TheMaskedTempest A lot of people did. Also, we don't have any idea what happens to Laura in SF III (NG, 2nd-I, or 3S) afterwards. She's only existing in SFV...and as a side note, LOVE the Elliot Edwards NiGHTS reference.
Hello Digi!
Is it okay if I use some Clips from this video?
I do have a video I'm creating and I'd like to use a clip or two.
I actually like Sean and how he is inexperinenced but still he a passion for fighting. I also like how he has his own interest as well.
RIGHT ON! Sean is my fav too, exactly because I relate
Oh my gosh. Sean is Naruto, Sakura is Sakura and Ibuki is Sasuke.
+Luke Umbra But who would be .... Kakashi?!?!! D:
DiGi Valentine Uh, Dan obviously.
D: D: D: HOLY SHI--!!!!!!!!
Would that make Gill Madara?
I would say Sakura is more Sasuke, she was good out the gate and kept getting stronger.
Remember in alpha 1 when Dan was usable and solid...that’s Sean to me
They did him so dirty throughout the history of Street fighter. Nerfing him and making him essentially a joke when as a child I got extremely excited to see this new character with a ethnic background carrying on the legacy of Ryu and Ken. I'm predicting that he will be on Street fighter 6. And hoping that he's mature and not a joke
Got to make that Laura episode. She seems like a Mary-Sue so far.
I really liked Sean. Especially his uppercut, with the downward slam after. It just looks so cool.
Sean is in the temporary SFV story. And the character from Brazil is his older sister, Laura Matsuda.
They have to use Sean as DLC
+Sadiki St. George might happen, Laura is his sister
*****
truly
good point, im guessing that Laura told Sean about Ken. Maybe Laura messed up or something and Sean tries to do what he cant do
I want Sean in Street Fighter 6
Yea hi I'm from 2021, it's oro sorry
I hate to say it but I loved this video he is my favorite character as well!!! GREAT VIDEO AN PERFECT CONCLUSION
He needs to be playable in SFV
I love playing as Sean & Sakura! Two great characters that should be the stable in future Street Fighters!
The mix of this and moves from his family’s style would be amazing to see.

...
I wonder what you said before you did an audio cut...
Lenny face
man oh man that's inspiring hahahah hope sean come back series
Man I need to follow Sean's philosophy it sounds awesome he sounds way better than his older sister who actually got into SF5 hopefully he makes it to SF5 though I'm not sure when.
Same with Akuma I hope he makes it as well
I hope Sean get in street fighter 5
i love Sean....kens student, playz basketball, ill hair....plus he can shoryuken, taisumaki-senpkyaku can even haduuken at times...i was hyped for this character when he was coming out
