THIS is why I love university lectures on any subject; the lecturers are passionate for their subject, they're experts in their field, and will not hesitate to throw a pen at a disruptive student. I've still got my notebooks full of hand-written notes and diagrams from my studies at uni, I treat them like the golden essence of knowledge they are. I've got plenty of academic books that go more in-depth on various practises, but I still refer back to my notes simply because they contain the significant key points. Lately I needed to learn something I didn't do at uni that's related to my field, and once I got a better understanding I even turned to some fresh pages in these notebooks and made further notes. I need to photocopy them and archive them as a PDF because losing them would be a great loss.
Somehow, this lecture always end up back in my feed. I've already watched it a couple of times, but a year goes by and. . . there it is again. So, I watch it again. I don't have the time to watch it again, but I do. . . VERY NON-INTUITIVE.
My guess is the youtube algorithm, they have discovered after x time a significant portion of people will rewatch something because most often they forgot they watched it and will make the same decision like the first time (to watch it). I have fallen for this several times.
My guess is people are looking for revision material before impending exams and those extra views cause the algorithm to promote it as a recommended video ...

40:25 i did that when i was 10 years old. Not sure why but it was fun at the time. I used to take ice cream buckets with a funnel stuck through with a hose on the other end. Fill the funnel with flour with a lit candle beside it and snap the lid on and blow. Nice flour explosion. Ya 40 years later and all i do is go to work so my kids can sit in classes like this. Hello Sir! I graduated with an MSc in Applied Physics from a highly regarded university here in the UK (unfortunately, no, I didn’t make it to Oxford / Cambridge! I would have tried harder, had I known. But then, isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing??!), a number of years ago. For various reasons (and again, I would go back and change things if I could), I have never since worked in physics, or science, though I keep a keen interest. However, your lectures are just fabulous, and I think I’ve watched all - or nearly all - of them. They have re kindled my interest, and my knowledge, which had turned very rusty! I recently retired after teaching for a bit over 20 years in several of the top international schools here in Thailand. I can only say that I wish I'd found this gentleman's lectures sooner. But better late than never , as I used many of his lectures and videos on rolling masses to help my middle school kids wrap their heads around basic concepts of physics. Bless you, Dr. Lewin.
When you really understand a subject, teaching others is easy because the concept can be passed along very easy with easy to understand language... even very complicated ideas... most people, for instance, think math is hard... we are taught that in school by every teacher we have... math is not hard at all, but when people who don't understand it try to teach us.... it teaches us that... math is hard.... my father was a nuclear physicist, and around the time I learned how to read, my father explained the basics of calculus to me... I was 3.... what he did was: described the flight of a ball thrown by hand... arcs, acceleration, basically, Newton's laws of motion.... it was clear enough that I have never forgotten the lesson... I gave my own son the same lecture... he was in advanced college calculus in 7th grade.... watch Richard Feynman to see what a real teacher is like... The laws of motion, like mathematics, are pure logic... with logic, all of this is clear by measuring the variables correctly... if this... then that.... Boolean logic... Peace
So this explains why on my motorbike when going at a reasonable speed, if I want to lean on the left I have to push on the left handle instead pulling it towards me! It always seems strange to me as logic would say "turn left = turn handlebar on left" but doing like this I actually turn right. Thank you for this lecture, angular momentum, spin angular momentum and torques were the hardest argument of physics to understand (to me) and you really helped me a lot with your demonstrations; this demo, in particular, is very enlightning.
And it even tells you why you want to lean to the left in order to turn left, because that applies torque to the wheels which turns the axis of rotation to the left. :D
There's more to motorcycle steering dynamics, it's actually pretty complicated. In addition to the gyro force, you're also deflecting the support point (wheel contact to road) from under the center of gravity, which also tilts the bike. The actual change of direction, and the amount thereof, is then another matter entirely.

44 years ago, my first job was as a rebuilder of bicycles.. I used to spin a front wheel on a bench grinder wire wheel.. I found the force interesting.. there is magic in this force, I dont think we fully appreciate this force..
I cant believe I just sat down for 49 minutes learning physics, yet I don't have any exam coming up. Very captivating. This changes the way I perceive circular motion. Now I'll be thinking more than twice when I see a bicycle in motion. Awesome content.
I am an engineer, but I try to watch TH-cam for fun when I am not at work. Somehow the algorithm thought I would think this would be entertaining and fun and made me watch this entire class for an hour at 11 PM when I should be sleeping. Thanks, TH-cam. Like this, if somehow you find yourself in a similar situation so we can examine how common my case is.

I love how he gives nature a human persona. Such as calling nature "clever". It makes the advancement and understanding of science not just a pursuit but a competition against a wily foe. Humanity is always substantially more driven to accomplishment against an adversary. Not only does this increase the primitive interest of is youthful audience but I feel Professor Lewin isn't just doing it as a teaching gimmick. I feel his respect for Nature. Every, "It's non-intuitive!" comment from him sounds like the "Well played" comment to a dear friend over a game of chess who has just made a brilliant move.
This lecture is one of my top 3 favorites, I'll be looking at more of your lectures to come. (The other ones were about the Ruben's Flame tube and inertia)

In love with this professor. I've never gone to college but I've always been fascinated with science and enjoyed math. He really inspires me to start taking classes, even though I just turned 34 a week ago.
(14 minutes). The hollow tube lost the race but as the incline approaches 90 degrees to the horizontal, they will both arrive at the finish line at exactly the same time. As the incline approaches zero degrees, they both will arrive at the finish line at the same time - ie infinitely long. I'd like to see a graph of the time taken for each cylinder -v- the incline angle.
Interesting question. One factor you might not be considering, is that the equation derived in this lecture is based on roll without slip as a condition of this problem. On a 90 degree incline, if you still maintain the roll-without-slip condition, you will find that they do NOT take the same amount of time to fall. If you were to actually carry this out, you'd find that there is a breakpoint where the contact turns into roll with slip, which voids the equation derived in this lecture. But there is an example we can give, which would still allow roll without slip on a 90 degree incline, and still use the formula from this lecture. Suppose you had two yo-yos, one with a string around a solid cylinder, the other with a string around a hollow cylinder. Upon dropping them, the yo-yos are not in free fall like you might expect. Instead, there is a tension force pulling tangentially, upward via the string. This will slow down the yo-yo with the greater ratio of rotational inertia to m*r^2 when compared to the other yo-yo, where r is the spooling radius.
I have a masters in economics and never took uni classes in physics. My main language isn´t english either, yet I still stayed for the whole duration of this video... I gotta say, understanding the concept is fairly easy and I find it interesting, but I`m glad my grade and future at the course is determined by the math to prove each experiment. I think it´s much much easier to enjoy something when it´s not a chore and so much depending on it.. I somehow doubt a lot of actual physicsmajors would enjoy this video as much as I do.
23 years ago for me. I knew all these along with chemistry. Now, I can draw a nice square, triangle and a good enough circle 😁😁😁. Great reminder that if you don't practice it you lose it.
Did Physics at the university, passed all hard exams back then, about 30 years ago. We surely did all this stuff, vaguely remember the symbols only when I see them on the chalkboard. What I find though is that the professor goes away with math way fast. I can still follow most.
This is great, but ... It reminds me of Engineering school some decades ago: everyone so busy writing stuff down that they miss much of what's being said. Give them the notes, so they can listen and mark them up as they see the need themselves. Hopefully, that's how it's done nowadays.
at my engineering school in germany we are given all notes in every class, but I still write down a lot myself. It helps to somehow process it and keep it in mind better.
This is something we experience everyday but we have been acustom to these facts but never question it. I've learned that everything has a reason for acting a specific way, most just except things, question everything, the reasons may surprise you. I’ve experienced these facts but never knew why, I've just found out why, Thank you.

I recently retired after teaching for a bit over 20 years in several of the top international schools here in Thailand. I can only say that I wish I'd found this gentleman's lectures sooner. But better late than never , as I used many of his lectures and videos on rolling masses to help my middle school kids wrap their heads around basic concepts of physics. Bless you, Dr. Lewin.
When you really understand a subject, teaching others is easy because the concept can be passed along very easy with easy to understand language... even very complicated ideas... most people, for instance, think math is hard... we are taught that in school by every teacher we have... math is not hard at all, but when people who don't understand it try to teach us.... it teaches us that... math is hard.... my father was a nuclear physicist, and around the time I learned how to read, my father explained the basics of calculus to me... I was 3.... what he did was: described the flight of a ball thrown by hand... arcs, acceleration, basically, Newton's laws of motion.... it was clear enough that I have never forgotten the lesson... I gave my own son the same lecture... he was in advanced college calculus in 7th grade.... watch Richard Feynman to see what a real teacher is like...
The laws of motion, like mathematics, are pure logic... with logic, all of this is clear by measuring the variables correctly... if this... then that.... Boolean logic... Peace
So this explains why on my motorbike when going at a reasonable speed, if I want to lean on the left I have to push on the left handle instead pulling it towards me! It always seems strange to me as logic would say "turn left = turn handlebar on left" but doing like this I actually turn right.
Thank you for this lecture, angular momentum, spin angular momentum and torques were the hardest argument of physics to understand (to me) and you really helped me a lot with your demonstrations; this demo, in particular, is very enlightning.

There's more to motorcycle steering dynamics, it's actually pretty complicated. In addition to the gyro force, you're also deflecting the support point (wheel contact to road) from under the center of gravity, which also tilts the bike. The actual change of direction, and the amount thereof, is then another matter entirely.
Not to mention the decaying circumference of the wheel as you lean further over causing the path of the bike to follow that direction

I love how he gives nature a human persona. Such as calling nature "clever". It makes the advancement and understanding of science not just a pursuit but a competition against a wily foe. Humanity is always substantially more driven to accomplishment against an adversary. Not only does this increase the primitive interest of is youthful audience but I feel Professor Lewin isn't just doing it as a teaching gimmick. I feel his respect for Nature. Every, "It's non-intuitive!" comment from him sounds like the "Well played" comment to a dear friend over a game of chess who has just made a brilliant move.

Yes I totally agree with you. I loved the experimental side of physics but because the teachers had a very dry way of showing the maths I quickly became confused and turned away from the field. I regret this now. The internet has shown just how good instruction and teaching "Can" be. What stuns me is I had assumed that modern teachers would watch the innovate ways of teaching on the web and copy them. But the majority do not. they trundle on with their archaic outdated methods and wonder why most students get bored or left behind. People in charge of education have a lot to answer for.

As the incline approaches zero degrees, they both will arrive at the finish line at the same time - ie infinitely long. I'd like to see a graph of the time taken for each cylinder -v- the incline angle.
Interesting question. One factor you might not be considering, is that the equation derived in this lecture is based on roll without slip as a condition of this problem. On a 90 degree incline, if you still maintain the roll-without-slip condition, you will find that they do NOT take the same amount of time to fall. If you were to actually carry this out, you'd find that there is a breakpoint where the contact turns into roll with slip, which voids the equation derived in this lecture. But there is an example we can give, which would still allow roll without slip on a 90 degree incline, and still use the formula from this lecture.
Suppose you had two yo-yos, one with a string around a solid cylinder, the other with a string around a hollow cylinder. Upon dropping them, the yo-yos are not in free fall like you might expect. Instead, there is a tension force pulling tangentially, upward via the string. This will slow down the yo-yo with the greater ratio of rotational inertia to m*r^2 when compared to the other yo-yo, where r is the spooling radius.
I have a masters in economics and never took uni classes in physics. My main language isn´t english either, yet I still stayed for the whole duration of this video... I gotta say, understanding the concept is fairly easy and I find it interesting, but I`m glad my grade and future at the course is determined by the math to prove each experiment.
I think it´s much much easier to enjoy something when it´s not a chore and so much depending on it.. I somehow doubt a lot of actual physicsmajors would enjoy this video as much as I do.

Did Physics at the university, passed all hard exams back then, about 30 years ago. We surely did all this stuff, vaguely remember the symbols only when I see them on the chalkboard. What I find though is that the professor goes away with math way fast. I can still follow most.

This is great, but ... It reminds me of Engineering school some decades ago: everyone so busy writing stuff down that they miss much of what's being said. Give them the notes, so they can listen and mark them up as they see the need themselves. Hopefully, that's how it's done nowadays.
unfortunately, a lot of classes still have you make your own notes. Some professors post lecture slides after or before class.
at my engineering school in germany we are given all notes in every class, but I still write down a lot myself. It helps to somehow process it and keep it in mind better.
