Thank you, this was very helpful. I attended a woodworking show in our area back in October and signed up for a door prize. I received a notification this past week that I had won the Fuji Semi-pro 2 HVLP paint sprayer. I will probably be back on here for some review work before I start using this to make sure I'm doing it correctly.
Great information using that model of HVLP sprayer because I am in the market for one. I have a project that I will be using an acrylic latex paint and did not realize to use lacquer thinner to clean with so thanks for the tip.
That's what I use to clean most things out of mine. I never have sprayed acrylic paint so I don't know how it will do with it. But guessing, it will probably do fine.
Great job explaining the Fuji. One question to clarify for myself - when you were spraying those horizontal panels on the bench, was the orientation of the sprayer at "6 & 12" or at "3 & 9" ? Thanks for posting this. If you're doing another I'd love an explanation of how to use the viscosity cup. Thanks.
Thanks. I would say more of a 2, 8 to a 12, 6. For those panels. I had to go back to the video and see. That's been awhile back when I made that one. You can pretty much hold at whatever angle you chose and are comfortable with other than upside down. It will spray at some steep angles
Thank you Tracy, I was looking up this unit for starting a business... And I agree that mechine has a tiny neuton jet fan right behind it, I appreciate you showing the introduction to it and demonstration how to clean the thing and proper maintenance. 🍻 To you my friend.
Good video! One thing I noticed is you called the Ford cup a "filter cup." That's not what is for, it's for determining viscosity and gauging how thin your material is
very good. only thing is i dont go that crazy with cleaning. just some xylene and/or carb cleaner and a few blasts has been fine so far. i think its actually designed so you dont have to actually take the whole thing apart. i only use polyurethane with some xylene in it so not sure how bad latex is with clogs.
just a tip, you don't need to run the turbine while cleaning out the gun since you have the gravity cup instead of the siphon. might just save you life on the machine as well as the filters.
I'm about to purchase one of these, very good overview. Do you know (or anyone else)....when the turbine is running and you temporarily stop spraying, where does the air flow? Do things heat up more when you aren't spraying?
Thank you. To be honest with you I have no idea. The hose does get hot at the turbine but I don't know where the positive pressure is directed when the trigger is released
The post is not designed to hang the gun from the hook. It's used when you disconnect the gun from the hose and the post sits inside the bottom of the gun.
Great video, I love it. But I have a question for the expert/s. Why would a person need to use laquer thinner to clean after latex, water based paint? Oil I understand, but after latex? That's new to me.
It will clean the paint out with little effort. I just spray until it's clean. Or the most of it is clean. I still have to break it down some and clean but it's easier
@Hammer Down Woodworking Tracy Maxfield we used to use lacquer thinner on some electronic parts to dry up water moisture from humidity but be careful it does drying out plastic or rubber parts then leave non-conductive mineral spirits to soft parts supple
Far as your knowledge, would you show a demonstration painting 🎨 like a bicycle see how well it spray's on? I would greatly appreciate it if you have one laying around bout the yard.
I do not have a bicycle or anything metal I could paint. I do however already have a video of spraying latex paint. It's titled Restoration of a 1940's porch swing. Hope that helps
Very informative video, thank you. I am a complete novice so my question is, at 19:20 you mentioned, after you sprayed the doors white, that that was after 4 coats? How much time did you wait in between coats? Did you have to do a full gun cleanup between each coat?
Thank you. I was spraying chalk paint on those pieces. Chalk paint dries very quickly. So there is no need to clean the gun up between coats. If you were going to do a coat and wait until the next day to apply a second coat then you would want to clean the gun. But with chalk paint it takes about 15 to 20 minutes between coats. So there is no need to dump the gun and clean each time
You can. As long as you clean the sprayer whenever you are done with whatever product you are spraying. You need to clean after each use anyway. I wouldn't mix water and oil based products together at the same time.
Great video, very informative! Im a furniture refinisher and i have recently bought this model. Can i ask if you used Fusion mineral paint with this sprayer ? If so did you have to thin it? Thanks
Thank you for the kind words. I have only sprayed latex paint, chalk paint and sealers so far through this sprayer. I have never used fusion mineral paint. I would assume you could but to say for sure I really don't know.
Not sure if you've used electric sprayers like the wagner or homeright sprayers, my question is how much over spray does this produce compared to the electric sprayers?
I have used the electric sprayers. I had a Wagner. I say "had" because it recently broke down while using it but it lasted for yrs. I will say there was more over spray with the Wagner sprayer. There will be over spray with any sprayer and there is several factors that cause it. Such as the tip vrs the product. The distance of the tip from the piece and the pressure of the sprayer. Wind, the size of whatever your spraying. But the Wagner sprayer is used more for spraying thicker products, such as exterior paints on houses, decks, fences, etc. The fuji sprayer is more designed for fine finishes. Hope this answers your question. I am by no means a professional with these sprayers. I have used several different types of sprayers. If I am spraying a house or deck, I would use the Wagner sprayer. If I am putting a finish on a piece of furniture, I will use my fuji or one of my pneumatic sprayers.
@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy3679 thank you for your fast and informative response, I recently refinished a typical 6 drawer from normal brown to white for my mom and in doing so came across lots of videos of furniture flipping as a side hustle. In my much earlier years I flipped cars so I learned some paint and body and this system is so similar. The flipping bug may have bitten me, I'll have to flip a few piece's to get the fugi.
So how hard would this be for a beginner that knows nothing about sprayers? I am wanting to attempt painting a bed and a dresser Do you think it’s something I could do with being a beginner? I am up for the challenge I just don’t want to mess it up
I just finished watching your video and I very much appreciate it. I recently purchased my sprayer and used it for the first time and got some nice results, but using your paint thinning technique, I think my next go will get me where I want to be. My question is about chalk paint. I’ve only used it once or twice with a brush and never cared much for it. In terms of doing a paint finish, my go to has been latex flat, then clear it with lacquer. When using chalk paint, are you clearing it when you’re finished? What are your thought on cabinet finishes with that? Lastly, you mentioned lacquer several times. Are you familiar with spraying colored lacquers? What’s your go to on that? Thank you! Christopher Goomey Louisville, Ky.
Thank you for watching. I do whatever my customer wants for a finish. I do put a protective coat on top of chalk paint. Such as spar eurathane or a water base polyurethane. I have used oil base polyurethane but I mix it down with mineral spirits. Like 50-50. I have not sprayed any colored lacquers. As far as my opinion on chalk paint for cabinets, personally I'm not crazy about it. It's too brittle or soft and is not durable enough. But that's just me. A lot of people like the scrapes and acratches or distressed look anyway so to each their own on that I guess
@chrissalazar183 regular. Straight out of the faucet. Never had any issues. But it's not very much water used to mix down the paint. Just enough to thin it a little
Good morning, I need some advice. I'm looking for HVLP spray gun for furniture refinishing. I've never owned an HVLP spray gun or airless spray gun. But right now I'm doing allot of refinished furniture, and after a few hours of painting by hand I get pretty tired. Would you recommend this machine? Or should I just buy one that is more expensive? My budget for a HVLP is no more than $1,200 also can I use oil based paints? If so what tip should I purchase? Thank you.
Yes I do recommend this sprayer. It should be marked on the paint can what size tip you need for that particular paint. It should also tell you the methods for applying. Such as brush on or spraying. Oil based paints are think and require larger tips and require mixing down. I would suggest getting a wide range of tip sizes like maybe a kit or large set of tips. Or go to whatever store or paint provider you use and look on the cans of the products you use the most and purchase those tip sizes. Just to have on hand what I needed. Hope this helps
@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy3679 thank you, it does help. I will be looking for that information in the cans, do you recommend any brand/maker of paint tips?

Honestly i dont know for sure. I have never used auto paint in mine. I would think that you could with the right tip in the gun but I would recommend contacting Fugi and asking a professional.
How many coats of water based poly could you get on a 4x8 sheet of plywood with a 600cc cup using a mini mite 3 or 4? I'd like to have an idea of the coverage from these cup guns before i buy one. I've never sprayed.
I have sprayed several types of Urethanes with mine but have not sprayed any acrylic Urethane through it. However I don't see any reason why it shouldn't. You may need to mix it down some and I would guess you will need a larger tip than the 1.3 the machine comes with. I would think a 2 would be best. No less than a 1.8. You will Aldo research what chimacal is needed to thin it if needed and what will clean the gun after use. Water alone will not remove the Urethane. Maybe liquor thinner. Hope this helps
I don't know if you can dilute it with water just because it says cleans with warm soapy water. Read the can first would be my advice or ask the salesman where you bought it what you need to thin it down with
