STORYLINE
The trial of a retired German doctor, accused of killing his step-daughter, resumed in Paris on Tuesday.
The trial was suspended earlier in the year when the accused Dieter Krombach was hospitalised with heart problems.
Krombach denies any wrongdoing and has lived freely in Germany since the 1982 death of 15-year-old Kalinka Bamberski.
Krombach was kidnapped in Germany in 2009, brought to France and left in front of a French courthouse on the orders of the victim's French father.
Speaking outside court on Tuesday, Andre Bamberski, said he expected the trial would be completed this time.
"We can't keep on postponing a criminal trial, no matter what the reasons. The fact that it had already been suspended once last time is absolutely exceptional," he said.
The unusual trial is the culmination of a decades-long battle between two men, in two countries, now both in their 70s.
But it also raises larger questions - about cross-border justice in the borderless European Union, and whether the father was right to try to take justice into his own hands.
Krombach's daughter Diana Gunther maintains her father is innocent and called for a fair trial.
"My father is being treated as guilty before he has even been judged. The presumption of innocence should prevail," she said.
France convicted Krombach in absentia in 1995 of "intentional violence that led to unintentional death" and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
Germany did not extradite him or press charges, saying there was insufficient evidence.

also ich bin mir nicht sicher, was ich von seiner unsympathischen tochter diana günther zu halten habe. entweder lebt sie in einer traumwelt oder sie hat denselben schlechten charakter wie ihr vater. auf alle fälle ist ihr auftreten als sehr provokant zu bezeichnen.
