We spend two night last year in Kurokawa Onsen, in a beautiful ryokan in the centre of the village, and very much enjoyed it. We got there by bus from Kumamoto and left by bus as well to Beppu (one per day, and a reservation is needed) and that was perfectly fine. We enjoyed being in the centre, so that we could walk to cafes, shops, the post office and restaurants easily. Gekkoju looks very beautiful, but I will always prefer staying somewhere more central.

It is a beautiful place and there is something to be said for the quiet elegance of the rooms, however, I still have to wonder... If 40% of Japan's population if over 60 and typically, retired seniors have discretionary yen to spend why are these places not making it more accessible for seniors with disabilities? I love tat they had Sapporo and some Italian red wine. The second half of your meal looked amazing. Thank you for all your time given to share this incredible resort with us.
You couldn’t have anything like that in the US because the very first person to stump their big toe would be the new owner after the won it in a lawsuit!!!
