Metal Head was my first real 3D game. It hasn't aged well, but it's still fun to play. You can also set the tempo of the BGM to play as fast or slow you want. I thought that was the coolest thing ever back then.
These things also came with grounding plates that inserted into the cartridge doors. That's what those steel panels on the side of the protrusion into the genesis cartridge slot were for.
I wanna build the SEGA mountain by having sega CD model1 and a model 1 sega megadrive on too and a 32x playing sonic 3 & knuckles with a game genie now THAT would be spectacular xD
Oh yeah! The tower of power, such Great way to describe this :D well only thing left is to do this for real! ^^ Good thing mark has the SEGA powerstrip to help :P
Here in the UK, I got Sonic and Knuckles when it came out and it is a cardboard case though later I saw the plastic case in the shops briefly. The plastic version is almost never on eBay UK so I think it's very rare. Interestingly, there is also another variation of the cardboard case in circulation. The insert is knuckles red colour and the manual is portrait rather than landscape. There is also a different sticker on the cart. Don't recall this repackage in the shops but it exists.
The Sega CD and the 32X were made by Sega to extend the lifespan of the Sega Genesis. Having seen it in the past, that's exactly what it looks like: the Genesis was on life support for 3 fricking years.
I have only 1 big complaint about youre videos, You should show some games gameplay in your gaming console review, imo its important in reviews. Dont take it bad tho, I think your reviews are awesome and I like them :D
What a nightmare, I lost my 32x-to-Gen cables for the longest time. Haven't been able to play my 32x in a long time. Now I keep those cables in a special bag. Same with the spacer. So glad I found that stuff. Get yourself a special baggy and keep it in a place you'll think to look.
Me too! I got my 32x back in '94 and it came with metal prongs. I keep seeing that black plastic cover you put under the 32x on videos, but i've always had the metal prongs.
apparently it's a breeze to get the cables you need now thanks to the aftermarket. not saying they're super cheap, but they do seem to be easier to find.
I love 32X. I'm a sucker for how cool it looks when you hook it up to a CDX console (which DOES work just fine, despite what the box says). It looks like a crazy space ship.
The Nintendo 32X would be the greatest system ever made by man. Anyways, I'm really liking how you are reviewing consoles/games that were not particularly well received because it gives me a greater perspective into gaming.
I loved my 32x when I was a kid I had virtua fighter and starwars for some reason my brother shoved pop tarts into the catridge so I beat the shit out of him!
Huzzah for all these console reviews! My brother and I had a 32X long ago, back when they were being sold for around $20 new and while I found the games I owned at the time to be entertaining, I can't say that I would consider buying one again. It's a shame that Sega never released the stand along 32X, that would've actually been worth owning, unlike this monstrosity.
The problem with 32x was,My opinions about it: 1 - Sega CD, cartridge system releasead after a cd system sounds stupid. 2 - Sega should have made only one system expansion, or upgrade, combining 32x and Sega CD 3 - After the release, all genesis should have being packed with it. And these broken system upgrades, made people being less sure about buying a Sega console, the Saturn
I'd agree with that, they should have stuck to CDs and released a stronger CD addon that has 32 bits or introduce stronger carts that has extra processing power like sega megadrive 32 bit carts
I think carts is a superior format opposed to discs it needs no moving parts, it's instant loading times, it's just like hard drives, SSDs are far faster than a regular HDDs hopefully discs will be a thing of the past when it comes to games, just look how incompetent it is when you have like four discs for ONE game! Games are getting larger and the formats need to evolve further to fit that need of space if games where to be on SDcards it would be no loading times, of course it's a little expensive but once it gets cheaper this is what we should use
Gotta give props to SEGA over the years with staying jet black with all their consoles. Most people suggest the reason they made the dreamcast white was they were trying to start all over again and keep their distance far from the previous three SEGA consoles.
I purchased this mushroom for $150. It looked like a desperate attempt to keep up with the competition. When I got home, I read in a magazine that Sega already gave up on it so I brought it back to the shop to refund my money. Best decision I ever made.
I'm confused here, I bought the 32x when it was released and played it on a Genesis (model 1 I guess you would call it) original. It came with 2 metal inserts that you had to place inside the Genesis game port before you placed the 32x adaptor on top. I don't see in either part 1 or 2 where you covered that or did they release a later version that didn't require those metal inserts? Or do you have an incomplete 32x system?
I'm a huge 32X fan but even I have to admit there are only a handful of games that are must-haves. Shadow Squadron, Knuckles Chaotix, & a few more. There are some exclusives like Kolibri, Metal Head, and Spider-Man Web of Fire. Also, Virtua Fighter looks better than the 1st Saturn version so that's a huge plus if you like the game.
Yes they are, I've never owned one because of it but hope to someday. I do own Virtua Racing Deluxe, probably one of the only games over here that doesn't cost a fortune for the 32X for when I do get one however.
@alece1382 Only for the model 1 Genesis...If you don't use the RF shielding it can cause distortion in gameplay and damage to the 32x. Spoken from a 32x owner
Some Genesis games came in that paper case too. My copy of Phantasy Star 4 did. And I think Sonic & Knuckles as well. But I think it later came out in a plastic case.
I still don't have the cable I need to use the 32x on my model 1. It was actually cheaper to just buy a model 2 and use that. Fortunately, the 32x and model 2 use the same power adapter. I eventually want to have a model 1 genesis, model 1 Sega CD, and 32x to do the Super Battleship Formation
It's blast processing squared. Honestly I'm still not convinced the PS3 could keep up with the awesome power of the Sega CD 32X combination system. Well at least we can have comfort in the fact that the Sega CD 32X had a superior library of games.
lol, I remember seeing Phantasy Star IV for 100 bucks. I then picked it up for dirt cheap when Blockbuster had their clearance sale on 16 bit games (to make way for PSX and saturn stuff).
ah we used to do the SOnic & Knucles on top (or under probly) the other Sonic Games so you could play as Knuckles in the Sonic games that didn't originally have him. Good stuff right there.
It is sad that the 32X does not work with the Sega Nomad or Super Nintendo. BTW what was the price of a 32X back in 2009? because in 2012/2013 its about $70.00.
SEGA are the Lancia of the video gaming world. They released great things with only minor issues with each, had one monumental flop (the 32x and the Beta coupe), and had an amazing revolutionary design in the works but never released it to the public (Neptune and the 2002 Delta). Plus they made some things that didn't make sense within the current era(Virtua games on the base genesis and retractable rear wings). anyone agree?
great review, i love my genesis with the svideo mod and liek you said in your other reviews " optimus prime is not complete without his trailer" ( sega cd) . In my case the trailer is the 32x :)
@SmoothCriminalAaron Given that the Saturn had similar hardware than the Genesis+32X (The 32x only lacks some RAM and the VDP GPUs), they should have added a couple of extra chips and a 32x cartridge port on the Saturn, and made the console compatible with the whole Megadrive / Sega CD / 32X catalogue. That would have been a smart move.
what do you think of the video game nerds opinion of the 32x? Is it really as bad as he says, or as good as what classic game room says? You both make good points, but I just want to know how much I should really spend on one if I see one. Is it worth the buy, or just shit?
My copy of Sonic and Knuckles has a cardboard case indeed, but i thought that was because of the weird cartridge. I have never seen it in a plastic case because it simply won't fit
@MAT0R0 They almost did. It was to be called the Sega Neptune which stuffed the Genesis and 32X in one box. But it quickly turned into vaporware and was never released.
Great reviews I just wish you'd show us some of the games that the systems u review r capable of. I know they r console reviews, but show what the graphics and titles r!
I was confused why SEGA said CD's were the big future of video games with their SEGA CD campaigning, then they went back to cartridges for the next add-on. I think 32X might have been a good idea if it were a GEN/32X system designed like the Model 2 Genesis.
I wonder what it would have been like if there actually was a Nintendo version of the 32x. Or what would have happened if they made something like that for the original playstation instead of making a playstation 2.
I had that before LOL, I remember it had "VIDEO" GAMES, the Scottie Pippen Bakettball game was hilarious. damn looking back I can't believe I bought this LOL
It's times like this that we Sega fanboys and fangirls wished that the Sega Neptune (Standalone 32X) was never cancelled. Thumbs up if you agree.
Clam shell cases would've been better for the game cases.
Metal Head was my first real 3D game. It hasn't aged well, but it's still fun to play. You can also set the tempo of the BGM to play as fast or slow you want. I thought that was the coolest thing ever back then.
SNES 32X...
YOU'VE CREATED A MONSTAR
These things also came with grounding plates that inserted into the cartridge doors. That's what those steel panels on the side of the protrusion into the genesis cartridge slot were for.

I think mark would faint from awesomeness!
Yeah mabye it could be dangerous amounts of awesome surrounding the same spot x)
Throw an Xband cart and sega channel cart in there and you've got a real tower of power.
Oh yeah! The tower of power, such Great way to describe this :D well only thing left is to do this for real! ^^
Good thing mark has the SEGA powerstrip to help :P
Been there, done that. :P Add the sega modem, sega karaoke unit and sega wireless controllers and you'll hava a tower of power royale.
Here in the UK, I got Sonic and Knuckles when it came out and it is a cardboard case though later I saw the plastic case in the shops briefly. The plastic version is almost never on eBay UK so I think it's very rare. Interestingly, there is also another variation of the cardboard case in circulation. One thing that sucks about the 32x cartridges is the lack of end labels so if you don't have a box they're hard to stack
The Sega CD and the 32X were made by Sega to extend the lifespan of the Sega Genesis. Having seen it in the past, that's exactly what it looks like: the Genesis was on life support for 3 fricking years.
Michael Breen Come up with something original. That's an exact quote from the AVGN
Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me for having an opinion, even if I DID borrow some stuff from the Nerd.
I have only 1 big complaint about youre videos, You should show some games gameplay in your gaming console review, imo its important in reviews. Dont take it bad tho, I think your reviews are awesome and I like them :D
Thanks for the review mate, your channel is awesome and very funny, I'm from the UK I just got a 32X from eBay and found this really useful.
Classic game room reviews are the best! Tomorrow Ima sit in my theater wit popcorn a coke and some movie candy and watch classic game room!
I have one! Even though I never play it, I'm still very proud to own one. Knuckles Chaotix is a pretty cool game.
What a nightmare, I lost my 32x-to-Gen cables for the longest time. Haven't been able to play my 32x in a long time. Now I keep those cables in a special bag.
Same with the spacer. So glad I found that stuff. Get yourself a special baggy and keep it in a place you'll think to look.

chfgn I want to get the cdx again, but it's just so expensive.
I was born in 1998 and dont remember a lot of this stuff but i would like to thank you for making me a clasic gamer
In Pennsylvania and Ohio we got The Exchange wich has old game consoles. And you can go to a goodwill for old games hopefully.
I love your videos. I do think console reviews should have at least some game footage though.
The Nintendo 32X would be the greatest system ever made by man. Anyways, I'm really liking how you are reviewing consoles/games that were not particularly well received because it gives me a greater perspective into gaming.
Sad to say that the 32X is now hard to get and the demanding price now is for over $150
i wonder how many fires that beast starded
I loved my 32x when I was a kid I had virtua fighter and starwars for some reason my brother shoved pop tarts into the catridge so I beat the shit out of him!
Lol xD I been a Sega guy for an year now. I think I want a 32x now.
It has some decent games not a huge library but it has gems
What I love about my local game stop called play n trade. They sell used consoles, games, and accessory's.
I love sega
love the relaxing music at the background.

I feel like I learn alot from this guy.
nice, you just gave SNES some blast processing, finally.
I have a model 1 genesis. I will be adding the 32x & cd afterwards.
Looks much better onto the model 2, no doubts about it.
I'm confused here, I bought the 32x when it was released and played it on a Genesis (model 1 I guess you would call it) original. have a really good voice for reviews. nice to listen. Like ''made'' for reviews
Yes they are, I've never owned one because of it but hope to someday. I do own Virtua Racing Deluxe, probably one of the only games over here that doesn't cost a fortune for the 32X for when I do get one however.
Awesome add-on that is still worth buying it!
@alece1382
Only for the model 1 Genesis...If you don't use the RF shielding it can cause distortion in gameplay and damage to the 32x.
Spoken from a 32x owner
@inabox85, didn't you comment the same thing in Part 1 of the 32x review?
Some Genesis games came in that paper case too. My copy of Phantasy Star 4 did. And I think Sonic & Knuckles as well. But I think it later came out in a plastic case.
The Ninendo 32x was only released in New Zealand, and is actually a Nintendo branded knife that you use to half the Nintendo 64's memory.
If you live in the United Stated, stores all around deticate most (if not all) of their shelves for classic/retro gaming.
I still don't have the cable I need to use the 32x on my model 1. It was actually cheaper to just buy a model 2 and use that.
Fortunately, the 32x and model 2 use the same power adapter.
I eventually want to have a model 1 genesis, model 1 Sega CD, and 32x to do the Super Battleship Formation

have u tried looking up stores near you? thats what i did, and now there are 2 different stores that have ton's of retro games!
You got to love how much he moves his hands
ive always wondered, does the 32x work with the sega nomad?
both. the sp was just an exterior redesign, not internal
I always appreciate information :)
Hello- your Genesis Model 1 says 'High Definition Graphics' whats the go there?
lol, I remember seeing Phantasy Star IV for 100 bucks.
I want to get one of these, but I heard rumors that the 32x can screw up the Genesis. Does anyone know if that's true or not?
I have a model 2 genesis and it doesn't have the inputs for the extra cables needed. Does this model bypass the need for extra cables or something?
yes they may be old and discontinued but they're awesome.
i think i may have found a new skit for the AGVN mixing console add-ons
3:59 the SNES Top Hat: on sale now!
I'd really enjoy if you reviewed the 32x CD!
It is sad that the 32X does not work with the Sega Nomad or Super Nintendo. BTW what was the price of a 32X back in 2009? because in 2012/2013 its about $70.00.
32x also unofficially works good with the Sega cdx! So you have sega CD, 32x, and Genesis all in a SMALL package.
what do you like better , model 1 or 2. ive never played the model 1. i have the model 2.
SEGA are the Lancia of the video gaming world. They released great things with only minor issues with each, had one monumental flop (the 32x and the Beta coupe), and had an amazing revolutionary design in the works but never released it to the public (Neptune and the 2002 Delta). you, good sir are my hero.
Is it worth getting the system if I already have the Sega CD?
@KendoSF13 That's where the independent retailers, ebay and, amazon come into play.
Are Mega Drive and Genesis games interchangeable with the 32X?
Classic Game Room
Can i buy your plastic spacer for the model 2 genesis
Great 32x review!
@Omegalore Go to amazon they have wires on their own
I have Sonic & Knuckles paper case! Christmas gift back in the day :)
great review, i love my genesis with the svideo mod and liek you said in your other reviews " optimus prime is not complete without his trailer" ( sega cd) . In my case the trailer is the 32x :)
@fudgemonkeyz79 You can use it without that, but make sure that you don't move the 32X while it's on because that plastic thing gives it stability.
My fire alarm went off when you put the 32x in the SNES! You know not to mix Sega and Nintendo!!!
thanks for the pointers :)
It's funny watching any of Mark's videos over a decade later. In every one he talks about how cheap the prices are and now....
what cables do you need for the model 2?
@SmoothCriminalAaron Given that the Saturn had similar hardware than the Genesis+32X (The 32x only lacks some RAM and the VDP GPUs), they should have added a couple of extra chips and a 32x cartridge port on the Saturn, and made the console compatible with the whole Megadrive / Sega CD / 32X catalogue. That would have been a smart move.
@jordanthewizard well guess what the european snes cartridges dident have end labels.
can the power base converter work with the 32x?
@GeezuzKhrist119 part 2 is kinda working for me now... it's taking a long time to load though and I had to refresh like 5 times.
@KendoSF13 Are you thinking what I am thinking? Funcoland!
@ 3:49 SNES: now why did you have to put it in ME? The whole SNES CD idea was bad enough!
what do you think of the video game nerds opinion of the 32x? Is it really as bad as he says, or as good as what classic game room says? You both make good points, but I just want to know how much I should really spend on one if I see one. Is it worth the buy, or just shit?
My copy of Sonic and Knuckles has a cardboard case indeed, but i thought that was because of the weird cartridge. I have never seen it in a plastic case because it simply won't fit
The Kansas City area has Vintage Stock. BEST STORE EVER.
@MAT0R0
They almost did. It was to be called the Sega Neptune which stuffed the Genesis and 32X in one box. But it quickly turned into vaporware and was never released.
My 32x I just got came with two of the model 1 cables
Is it possible to put a 32X into the cartridge slot of another 32X? Then you'd have a 64XX...
You don't have the metal clips that fit in the top of the Genesis for grounding.
You should do a SEGA 32X CD review next!
Fun Fact: The Game boy advance is actually 32 bit
Great reviews I just wish you'd show us some of the games that the systems u review r capable of. I know they r console reviews, but show what the graphics and titles r!

I had that before LOL, I remember it had
"VIDEO" GAMES, the Scottie Pippen Bakettball game
was hilarious. damn looking back I can't believe I
bought this LOL
@jfetherboy I'll make a note of that. My family plans to go to Lansing.
