This is the Catholic hymn that for me resonates most clearly. I remember that after receiving my first Holy Communion at the age of 7 at the Merrylee Franciscan Convent in Glasgow, Scotland in 1944 we formed a procession through the convent gardens while singing this beautiful hymn. The nuns carried a large statue of the Blessed Mother and the girls carried baskets of flower petals which they strewed before the statue, while the boys carried lanterns on long poles. The procession ended with the Blessed Mother's statue being crowned with a garland of roses. That was 70 years ago and I hope this memory stays with me for whatever time remains. May all generations call her Blessed!
i remember singing this every May when we would crown The Blessed Mother at Holy Rosary Church. It was beautiful to hear the wonderful voice of John McDermott sign it...
I, too, have a Holy Rosary Church! I'm in Reading, PA. I haven't been to a May Crowning in 20 years, as it's usually the Sunday after Mothers' Day and I'm a Saturday evening lector. Perhaps I'll go this year...
This is one of the best songs ever especially this version way better then a choir version because when it a choir it is less passionate and therefore less beautiful
Bring flow'rs of the fairest, bring flow'rs of the rarest, From garden and woodland and hillside and vale. Our full hearts are swelling, our glad voices telling The praise of the loveliest, Rose of the vale. Chorus O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May. O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May. Our voices ascending, in harmony blending. Oh! thus may our hearts turn dear Mother, to thee. Oh! thus shall we prove thee how truly we love thee, How dark without Mary life's journey would be.
