  • To get a fine line, use one of these. Lots of samples & practising, best not to sit down too.

    Thank you for telling us it’s called a “technical pen” which makes shopping for it a lot easier.

    Finally after 30 years I know what its called. My grandpa had a kit with all sorts of compasses, this one always had my atention, I had no idea you just put the ink in it like that and it wont drip. Surface tention or something ... great thing to get of my mind at 1:30a.m.😂

    and here i was thinking the entire time that the prongs were used to hold a small edge so as to allow circular cutting. Very helpful, thank you.

    I just acquired a vintage drafting set from Germany today and I just love the way it looks. There are several small and large compasses and pens, and tools that look like they would be used for scribing. But the needle tips are much too small for that so I'm not sure. But I have no idea what all of the (excuse my lack of any terminology) "tweezer ends that look like beaks" but now I see how they hold ink. Thank you so much for the video, it's difficult to find information on these not knowing where to start looking. I can't wait to figure out how to use all these tools properly :D

    Thank you. I took a class where the teacher put the halos on for everyone with this kind of compass. I didn’t see how she put the paint in. Just bought one for myself. Your video was very helpful.

    Pretty cool! I found some old Staedtler compass kits that came with ruling pen nib accessories.

      I'm so glad you found it useful! I'm sure there are other ways to do it but this is the one that I've found reliable after a bit of practice.

    What compass brand did you use? Staedler?

    Hi Katherine, great video. What compass and ruling pen are using please? I am finding it very difficult to a reasonable set on line… Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for this helpful video! Can I ask what color Plaka paint you use (I see different colors are available) and what is your ratio of pigment to Plaka when doing lettering or halos? Thank you so much.

    • @katherinesandersicons1917
      @katherinesandersicons1917  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Pat. I'm not very scientific about ratio: I tend to mix it until it's the consistency of single cream - it flows but isn't so fluid it runs off. The plaka I use is a mix of a brown red and a scarlet red - I don't have the jars nearby, sorry.

    Brilliant! I have been looking for this information for about a day and a half! The other question I have is an extension arm on these drafting sets. How does one make a larger Circle? Also, if one does not have that thickener, could one use some gum arabic?

    • @katherinesandersicons1917
      @katherinesandersicons1917  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the delay Tracey. The extension arm shouldfit on to the same socket I put the 'pen holder' circle into on the botton of one leg of the compass. I've never used gum arabic, so I'm afraid I don't know how that would work.

    Do you have a recipe for the paint mixture? It's egg tempera and casien mixed? This is a recipe for applying gold leaf after?

    • @katherinesandersicons1917
      @katherinesandersicons1917  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi jaz. I normally mix roughly 50/50 casein paint and egg tempera - the halo requires a thinner mix than say lettering, with more flow, so a little more egg helps. I’m not sure what you mean about applying gold leaf after, could you explain?

    What sought of paint/ink do you use...??

    • @katherinesandersicons1917
      @katherinesandersicons1917  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marie G if painting on gold, I use a mixture of undiluted egg tempera with pigment (ie add pigment to your egg stock mixture but don’t dilute) with a casein based paint called plaka by Pelikan. It rubs off on the edges if not varnished over but is good for writing. Alternatively you can use just regular egg tempera if you are painting over an area with a layer of ox gall or garlic juice on the gold - these both change how reflective the gold is. If I’m painting onto an ungilded board I just use normal egg tempera but not too diluted. Hope that helps!

    I had no fricking clue. All these years I've had compasses and thought “gee sometimes a pen would be nice instead of this lead”.
