Everyone looked like they were having the time of their lives! They all must have loved staging those knife fights, spear gun 'hunts', the flares, and the unexpected 'blood'! Barb is a great actress; I loved her 'death' scenes, hose slicing, and her evil grin.
Yep! Barb's smile is evil.
We sure have a lot of fun - a bunch of old guys acting out their youth.

I grew up in the 80s with my grandpa throwing this type of scuba gear/weight belts into the 12ft. pool. He had us suiting up underwater/ clearing the old style masks. He learned to dive from the frogmen that came back after wwii. Great memories.

Realize that we get no funding for this. Everyone travels to the event, pays for accommodation, gets his/her gear ready, even pays for air fills.
But i think you can see from the smiles we're happy.

I was there at the Sea Hunt event. It was a great time!! Silver wetsuits!!
The 3 Silver Springs Sea Hunt events were spectacular - and unique. I know of no others like them ever happening.
And the gear, displays, special visitors, underwater scenarios, etc. were really special.
If you are a Vintage Scuba guy or a Sea Hunt nut, you shoulda' been there!

This Sea Hunt Remembered brings back fond memories for me. I
grew up here in Orlando, FL and was addicted to Sea Hunt. I did my first check
out dive obtaining a C card from Florida Skin Divers Association with the Orlando Otters Diving Club. The water test was in Cristal River using
steel 72s with a double hose regulator. While in the United States Coast Guard
stationed in Miami I bought first sets of SCUBA tanks which were a set of steel
double 50s that were used in the James Bond film Thunder Ball. Memories
Wow! FSDAwas well-known at one time but I think they've stopped operation. IDEA was related to that organization and they are still around. I was an Instructor Trainer for IDEA years ago but seldom hear of them anymore.
And there are few places more exciting to do an open water dive than Crystal River.

Magnificent
By far one of the best "living history" events I've seen. It really take the age away from black and white and faded front covers when you can see it like this and just for a moment, you can imagin you're there and it's brand new equipment using the latest advances in diving.
I often watch an episode of Sea Hunt from my large original 16mm collection. I use it on a 50 year-old projector.
It feels like I'm back in High School (my high school years were great!).

Wuaooo is very good I feel sad that in my time 1970 (Cuba- Havana) I am 53 now I did not see this aventure but the idea that exist this hunt episode is so nice now I feel that I lost a precious moment in my life just because I lived in Cuba I am so sorry for me .

It still amazes me as a modern day diver as to why we "must" use a BCD wing/jacket when clearly when the sport was in it's infancy this wasn't the case.

Well, there's lots of things we didn't use in the 60's - BCS, pressure gauges, safe seconds, etc. But it wasn't because we refused to use them - they weren't available!! We didn't even think about it. It's not like I went diving and said to myself, "Gee. I'm not going to wear that BC thing today." We didn't HAVE that BC thing!!!
In training we learned to adjust our weights for the depth we were diving. We pulled ourselves down or picked up rocks to get down. That's simply the way we dove! It was fun but it is much easier and safer now.

Usually when I first arrive and get ready to dive I will go in with just a bathing suit.
The water is a fresh 72 degrees which certainly has a cooling effect on the body but is also quite bearable.
I do this for 2 reasons:
1. It simply looks very vintage. Many divers dove in a bathing suit only in the 50's and 60's, including myself.
2. I'm the only Canadian and I have to uphold our tradition of being used to the cold - and a bit crazy too.
My Facebook page (alec peirce) has a good picture of myself and my incredible wife Diana diving at Silver Springs in bathing suits.

I seen the underwater flare that was neat but how about the auto inflating Marker buoy? any leads on how they were made?
We didn't have any of the LifeGuard CO2 buoys and it would be a problem for the glass bottom boats to have these popping up. That and they are 50 to 60 years old so the rubber may burst. Look back in my Vintage Scuba at S02E03 to see my Lifeguard and watch me fire a Shark Dart CO2. Fun stuff.

Hi Alec. I hope South Africa went well. I remember you touched on the origins of the Word SCUBA in one of your videos, I just watched sea-hunt episode 2x5 the count of Monte Cristo and what I noticed was Mike referred to a diving lung but the Stunt actor referred to being a good Scuba diver. the episode was aired feb 1/1959 does that correlate to your history of the terms introduction? Another thing I wanted to ask you was didn't the early tanks with only a shoulder strap hurt your back bone without any padding? thanks Owen m
We had a great time in South Africa. The diving was good. They sure have lots of sharks there. And we saw simply every animal in Africa on our safari - up close and personal too. We weren't just watching; we were interacting with them almost. We were charged by 2 elephants at different times, almost hit a rhino, were less than 10' from several female lions with cubs and on another day less than 10' from some big male lions. We saw Cape Buffalo every day, as close at 50'. And finally we saw a leopard. At one point it walked between our trucks. We could have reached down and touched it. These were all completely wild animals. There are no fences at the park we visited. It was pretty exciting.
The term SCUBA was starting to be used by the early 60's. It wasn't in common use until the late 60's. Divers were usually called lung divers through the 50's or simply skin divers.
It wasn't often that we dove without a suit of some sort. Only Mike Nelson did that. The straps were loose and the tank floats remember. I really don't recall that the tank ever hurt my back. We were diving recently in Silver Springs with a strap-only tank and I was in just a bathing suit. Didn't seem to be a problem.

Hi Alec it sounds like you had as much fun out of as in the water. Is it true that sharks only feed at night? I asked another diver about sharks and he said "they are just another fish". I have never seen one in person. you mentioned that the old steel tanks floated? the Aluminum ones today sink like a rock (my toe agrees!)ouch! the issue I had with my e-mail not receiving your messages was a changed setting at my end, if you do ever decide to sell some of your old 2 hose regulators hope you will let me know, Are you planning your next adventure yet? I also wanted to comment on the modern moldable mouthpieces, you mentioned them in a tech tip, I purchased one and molded it to my teeth and did a test dive, I found that it was choking the flow of air to my lungs, I changed to the safe second for the rest of the dive. I think what happened was my teeth are too close together or I bit down too much during the molding as opposed to the rubber ones that keep your teeth apart further.it was worth a try, but I would not recommend them to anyone. No way. It's a state park and took us almost a year a LOTS of paper work to dive there.

There is the very modern Kraken or updating old double hoses. Look for videos S07E17 and S08E06 on these two subjects to see how cool double hose diving can be today.

The water at Silver Springs is pretty much the same year round - 72 degrees. Maybe a bit cooler in Jan/Feb/Mar.
I have often made dives there in a bathing suit. It's cool but very diveable.
The other divers think I'm crazy. Crazy Canuck they say.
I like it. Personally I'd rather dive with no suit or, in cold water, in a wetsuit rather than a drysuit.
I like the feel of the water when I'm diving. To me it's part of the experience.
You may have seen my picture from 1965 diving in a lake in Canada. I have wetsuit jacket on only, no pants. Did that for years. Mind you I was in my teens. Still am according to Diana - in my head.
Doesn't bother me being seventyteen!
There's something really special about being in a bathing suit, putting on a steel 72 with a 2 hose regulator, a mask and fins and jumping in the water.
The other day I helped a kid with a broken motorcycle on the side of the road. It was a 1987 Honda 550 4 that he'd fixed up to look just like an old cafe racer. It was a bit rough looking but pretty neat. He was just 19 and didn't seem to have much mechanical knowledge but was having fun trying. I had a bike just like it. The problem was fuel. His filter was full of crap. We cleaned it out and the bike ran fine. He took it for a short ride and when he came back I asked him if he always drove like that - like an old man, slow and easy. He said yes which is probably smart but I asked if I could try it out and of course he said yes. So off I went for a 5 minute ride, no helmet, on the highway, and I whaled on it pretty good- up to 4th in a few seconds and then back to him. Mighta' got to 90mph. All's good.
So why the story? 2 reasons: 1. it confirms what I've said to Diana and other biker friends many times - I will never own another crotch rocket. I raced for several years (Ducati & Norton) and when I get on a bike I have to go fast. If I had a quick bike I'd be dead in a week. 2. It felt good! No helmet, like the old days, leaning over on a quick bike and feeling the vibrations and the wind. It was just like diving in the old days too!! Yes. I had a big smile.

That's what I thought as well. I am basically good for at least a 55 minute dive in 66 degrees F. as I did one here about a month and a half ago. And we always saw Mike Nelson diving without a wetsuit all the time it seems. I;ve been busy and finally got back into the Red Sea about 2 months ago.

Can't be sure but we usually have a Vintage/Sea Hunt event in March.

Hi Alec. really enjoyed your shark diving with the bait ball video (WOW!) Anyways I wanted to ask you, I just watched the sea hunt 3-14 episode about saving two kids in a cave with some explosives ,what caught my eye is that the two kids were using single hose regs and a 20 cf ? tanks, were these considered toys at the time (1960) I recall in one of your tech tips you said your dive instructor said never use those single hose regs they will kill you. Also I noticed in most of the sea hunt episodes so far that the "J" valves are in reserve position and don't have a cord attached were they using those audible low in tank monitors that you spoke about? It is kind of funny in many of the show shots they refer to being down 100 feet but you see the underside of the water 10 feet above them. It was still a new world for most of the watchers. Wow! Lots of thoughts.
2 hose regs are quite clumsy so I'm guessing it was easier for kids (like Jeff and Cindy Bridges - Lloyd's kids) to use small tanks and a single hose reg. Despite the negativity about them from older divers, the early single hose regs worked pretty good.
Most of the underwater scenes were in 15 to 20' of water - clear, fresh water usually in Silver Springs, Florida. A reserve just wasn't needed. Plus they always had an experienced safety diver close by. Leon Benson of ZIV Productions was notoriously cheap so he probably wanted the entire tank used up before he'd pay for a fill.
A related, little-known story about diver safety is that on the very first day of underwater shooting, after maybe 4 hours of scuba training the day before, Mike Nelson (Lloyd Bridges) jumped into the water at Silver Springs and started down, cameras rolling.
Then he stopped and started right back up. He had no air! Yep! Somebody gave Mike Nelson an empty tank on his first dive!!

A chap from Atlanta, Georgia come into Scuba 2000 one evening when I was there. He was an avid follower of my videos and really liked Sea Hunt too. We had quite a good time together and I offered to take a picture of him with myself. He was quite thrilled. Then I asked him (while keeping a serious face) if he'd like a picture of himself standing on the Tech Tips set. So we did so. Now bear in mind that the "set" is the service bench at the store, nothing special at all. Kevin just sets up the lights and I stand there and do my thing. But he was really excited and said his dive buddies would be very envious at the next club meeting when they saw his pictures. It was pretty neat to see someone so enthusiastic. Reminded me of myself when I was starting diving.

BTW, where do you live and what's your first language?
There was an attempt to re-make Sea Hunt in 1987 but it was not the same and ran for only a short while. You can still find these episodes on Google. Look for 'Sea Hunt 1987'. Oddly, it was supposed to be set in Florida but the land scenes were filmed in British Columbia, Canada.
The original series hit a home run for many reasons and that will never be repeated in today's world of computers, video games and cynicism.
It sure is fun looking back though. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
