Long Term Food Storage Basics: Off Grid Pantry

  • Starting a long term food storage pantry can be confusing. Preppers focus on long term storage, homesteaders focus on caning and storing their spoils.
    What should you do for your own pantry needs? Here on our homestead we have a dual purpose off grid pantry. Long term storage is good, but we also focus on daily needs. I want to save money, I dont want to go to the store every couple days, and I want healthy food items.
    Building my pantry to serve my needs took many years. But I have both long term and short term. Want to save money and have a usable pantry. See what I have to say about that today!

    I was raised by my Grandmother and Great grandmother. They went through the depression and taught me a lot. I watched them can and dehydrate with little to nothing. I've been either Prepping or hoarding food and useable items for as long as I can remember. My kids and husband thought I was a little off, until the prepping movement hit. Now they think I was ahead of my time. My how they change their minds when something is " IN ". God Bless you and your family. Keep making the videos. Thanks!

    I like your videos. I love canning too. I try to get my friends and family on board but they just laugh at me. That is until Christmas time and the jam gets handed out! I believe that people who aren't preppers or homesteaders can benefit tremendously from canning. The world is just too fast for some people I guess. Thanks for the videos.

    I love seeing your pantry! Seriously it makes me giddy to see all those home canned goodies. I have been canning and preserving for about 3 or 4 years now and I love it. I'm so addicted to it. The best part for me though, is when I find a good deal from the farmers market and come home with several hundred (yes hundred!) pounds of fresh produce and my whole family gets involved in cleaning, chopping, stuffing jars, putting on lids, etc... It's so fun to see how proud my guys all are of the work we did. And the "ping" is probably my favorite sound in the world. I love it! lol. I'm sure you understand this, but other people think I'm a little nutty.

    I absolutely love your pantry videos. The area I am most interested in is your meat storage. I can't tell you how many pounds of meat I have lost due to improper packaging or not knowing that the freezer died. To be able to store meat without refrigeration is truly a lost art in America. Canning, smoking or some other way of persevering meat for long periods of time can make a big difference in your daily diet.

    A pantry is one you use. Stock up on one month of food. Some stuff last longer than a month so stock up on it. Flour gets weevils. So into the freezer. Also can go in frig. Noodles can be frozen so I heard. Canning is a good idea and it last a long time. Need to learn to can. Also we have freeze dried food for emergency. Rotating. Beans can be stored a long time. Just got to keep food air tight so weevils and mice won't be able to get in. Had a mouse problem once and hard to get rid of them. Nice video tho.

    Can you comment on the safety of leaving rings on jars or stacking jars
    on top each other. Some preppers say that stacking jars on top each
    other or leaving rings on are high risk practices that endanger the seal
    vacuum.

    Great Video!! So good I a sharing on my go to FB page with my fellow preppers/Homesteaders. We also only stock what we eat. We have eliminated all grains and processed foods. So we are at about 85% self sustaining. We pretty much have a Palio diet without nuts. However we do drink our goat/yogurts and make homemade cheese. For me I knew to have a simple life, we needed a simple diet. So aside from dry beans we have No package goods in our home. I think God for our Pastured meat and garden goodies!

    thanks. got into all this "prepping" bizz, about a year ago. you ladies on you tube, have a far better, way to explain, and just general outlook about the subject as a whole. I'm trying to get my friends, that share interests in being prepared for hard times, to get on board with food storage, but its hard to convert from "gear head" to "home stead". Some talking points you have will help. Either way thanks for the advice, I'll be keeping up to date from now on.

    Great advice. Thanks, Starry! We are basically just beginning, but the first thing we did a year ago was buy a 2 week supply (for our family of four) of Waterbricks. We also got a one month supply of food in #10 cans from the LDS cannery in our area. From there I just started stocking up on things we use and eat regularly. Canned goods on sale, and grains and beans from Azure Standard that I repackaged in 1/2 gallon jars. I hope this is right!

    One thing to think of, and you say it, is stock what you will eat. Plan the meals you stock up on. I have storage food in 5 ga buckets that will feed four people for 3 days. 10 buckets makes a month of food, more if we shoot some family members early... We test the planning by pulling the oldest bucket and cooking the meals that it was designed to make. The idea is to make meals that can be prepared in one pot. So far, the family has liked the meals. Now if I can get them to help plan out the meals...
    Another thing I did was to throw in something they will appreciate. My wife loves Chef Boyardee stuff. I keep a can for each bucket. She is looking forward to the zombie apocalypse.
    We have a short term "Plan B". Once we get on some land OUT OF THE CITY, then we will be building a sustainable home.

    • @robbie9118
      @robbie9118 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, Franceska. This is the short term plan. The idea is that we can eat for three days on one bucket. Should we have a problem and only grab one or two buckets each, we have complete meals for three days/per bucket no matter which ones we grab.
      Once I have the short term taken care of (on a budget), we will go for longer storage items, like Starry's pantry. Then buckets full of rice, beans, flower etc will be built.
      You have to start somewhere. The key is to start. Ya never know when they will come in handy. I know some folks who got hurt financially and their stores helped them over the hump.

    • @purple_leaf5770
      @purple_leaf5770 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +New To Prepping Wow! UK shops do not sell canners? Your govt real wants y'all subservient. Glad to see you break the conditioning. $69.97 here at Walmart for 7 quart Presto canner. Being affordable still does not help bring in more people to self-sufficiency. How about your jars and lids? Good luck. I would keep your prepping to yourself since I know y'all aren't allowed guns.

    I grew up helping Mom can foods and did so myself when I moved out on my own. Having sustainable storage allows people to eat from it and and add to it. There are good fruit years and bad fruit years, Also with tomatoes and other foods. In good years can more because never know what the next year would bring. Having the food that are eaten from and adding to in the pantry allows not to have a big change to deal with if getting snowed in for several days to SHTF. Eating what being used to is better than pulling out foods for that purpose. Whole grain foods don't last as long so they need to be rotated more often. The changes after SHTF is that how the food can be cooked, or in a situation that having foods on top of your shelves would be quick. Store bought cans can leak and spoil after a few years. Keep those rotated and check for bad cans. I don't know how long home canned foods last, but they will discolor after a long time. Thanks for sharing your pantry. It is a good one.

    "Sensible Food Storage" on c. Westfall'sWestfall's channel is great. Put out by the LDS (they know their stuff on it) don't worry just food storage info on that show.

    Starry you can grow black beans on the homestead. They are very easy to grow and add nitrogen to the soil. God Bless

    Love your videos. Very helpful. Can you make a video of your soap making? Your lotions, shampoo, conditioner if you do them too? Really want to learn from you. Be blessed, Starry girl. Shalom

    I've noticed that three things are always missing from prepper/homestead pantries: honey, lentils and sauerkraut. Honey will last literally forever (over 4000 yrs+), lentils you can grow in your garden and they only take 20 min to make, and sauerkraut (you and Mr (H)Wilder are from Wisconsin) need I say more?

      +Mark Haushahn Im going to do a more detailed vid on MUST have staples..honey is one of them..WE have lots!!

    l learned that mistake too... when i was at the cashier, the lady said "this is alot of food" i replied... im helping feeding the homeless... i had to lie because thats when stock piling food was frown upon.

    Hi Starry☺ I enjoy your videos, and am learning to be more self sufficient. I have a garden, make my bread and mainly cook from scratch. I was wondering if you could do a video on your cleaning products. What you wash dishes with, clean your bathroom, floors etc. I already know you make your laundry soap. Thank you and have a nice weekend. p.s. the dogs are stealing the show, you know that right ?! 😏

      +Julie Burnett I will add that to my list or maybe mention it in another vid. Im glad your watching and enjoying and YES the dogs really are the stars!! EVEN off camera!!

    When you and your husband first met, did you both know that some day you'd like to live off grid? How long did it take you to actually prepare to go off grid before you actually did?

    Starry, I am from the U.P. Of Michigan originally and your accent is what originally drew me in to your videos. It reminds me of home. My wife and I want to start homesteading and watch your videos all the time! She has been talking about doing some dread locks for a long time. When she saw yours she said I love how Starry does her dreads! She wanted me to ask if you had any tips on how to do just a few and do you have any care tips? Thank you and God Bless! -Wally and Lacey

      +wally Rankin Wow its funny people either love the hair or they are very rude. If your wife does dreadlocks know that many people..many..will judge her! I find that alot. Its sad. My hair actually naturally knots. Knots all the time so I have to braid it..then the braids et knotted so I ended up doing some dreds..naturally. How ever they grew is what I have. I dont use anything special...just suave shampoo..hahah cheap! I dont know anything about dreads per say...its just how my hair decided to go!!:))
