Alex, you say 'parliament'... I say, 'bloodsport'. It's all getting very vicious. There's more than a hint of using the chaos, instigated by her predecessor, to jostle for power. The chalice is forever poisoned, now.

    • @peteradaniel
      @peteradaniel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

bat in the attic that's pretty cynical. Parliament has always been and forever will be a blood sport. That's part of the Parlé and in Parliament and is what makes British democracy great, in my opinion. Now I certainly agree under a Tory government that the position of prime minister is a difficult one to take, because they have more divisions and fissures than the house of Usher at this point, and have been since before David Cameron took office. Brexit had nothing to with Europe and was everything to do with Cameron trying to mend the rift in his party. Now it's time to sit back, grab a bag of popcorn and enjoy the purge because it's crisis which makes democracy.

He knew the parties were split on the EU and took a gamble believing the voters would side with his views and now here we are. This is wholly a situation of their own making and I agree that there are a whole bunch of them including Cameron, Farage and Johnson who have truly let us down with their absence in the last 12 months. May says another people's vote is undemocratic, and compares it to having another general election just because we don't like the result... The hypocrisy, as she called another general election (3 years early) only last year. All because she didn't like the last general election result, which she felt did not give conservatives enough seats in parliment. I feel May does not want another vote beacause she fears the outcome, and she is strongly against staying in the EU. I'm not really a EU fan, but this is a MASSIVE one off life changing issue. We were hugely lied to on both sides of the campaign during the run up to the referendum. Now we know the truth, understand the concequences, and can see the (only) deal that's been offered, is it not fair and democratic to have a people's vote. It's clear parliament can'take make a decision, and do not know what to do.

    • @icarus877
      @icarus877 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I here what you say, it's interesting. Both sides told a few lies it's true. However I have to say that remains lies have proven that a wide range of lies emanated from orchestrated civil servants, the same project fear is happening again from the same people. Somehow these same bureaucrats and civil servants got in charge of us withdraw information from the EU.
As a Brexiteer who's main reason for leaving was the concern of our ever dwindling democracy this deal of handing more power to the EU, not taking back our fish and asking each and every person in the country to fork out £1000 for the privilege is utterly disgraceful.

    • @alexbright7098
      @alexbright7098 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@icarus877 I do agree. I don't like how much power the EU have over us, and this is not why we entered in 1973. They interfere in our democracy, and we pay in a fortune. Not to mention 60% of our fishing grounds they have access to. I must admit though, I don't like the deal we have been offered by the EU. We pay 39 billion, and still no guarantee of a trade deal after. Also it states in the deal that if we want a future trade deal, then we still have to give up much of our fishing waters, the same as in the EU. We could be locked essentially the EU indefinitely, especially because of the N Irish back stop issue. They have us over a barrel with this deal. The other option is no deal, but I really think that would cause profound issues with our economy, which is so geared up to competing and exporting to the EU markets. It's all a bit of a mess. That's why I say maybe the people should choose, as the politicians are all at log aheads. There only seems to be 3 options available, and the EU are firm on not negotiating the terms of the deal whatsoever. The options appear to be, 1.Take the deal as it is. 2. No deal at all 3. A referendum. To be honest I don't know what is the best option for us.
Would be interesting if anyone else has any ideas on options for us to take?

You know - when I heard the news that the British were leaving for the first rime I thought to myself; that's gonna be ugly for us and even more for them. What I failed to understand is how entertaining a tragedy can be... Greetings from Germany - sad to see you go but boy do you understand it to make your own misery quite amusing. Merry Christmas to the English - I said it before and I will say it again. While I am trying my best to conceal it; we invented the word "Schadenfreude" for these exact situation.
I can not stretch enough how unfortunate I find this event but at the same time - who sows wind will reap storm. You get what you wanted. If you let yourself be influenced by populism, then you have indeed failed to read George Orwell and that alone is a big enough sin to make me forget all sympathy. We showed the world what happens when you put emotions over reason, when you use half truths, open lies, extreme nationalism and racism to fuel a goal. Sometimes it is necessary to listen.
Everytime someone claims that the EU is a dictatorship or that all immigrants are hurting the nation, no matter how often one is proven wrong with statistics, if you don't want to hear the warning we simply can not help you. But remember this. If everything should go down the gutter - we did not shut the door behind you. We did not force you to leave. We did not oppress you. We did not force our laws upon you, you created them together with us. And now you choose to abandon Europe. Yes abandon. No matter how often you may claim that you are not. Just like Russia, from now on your interests will lie in your own nation and if you want to defend this position, let me assure you, as a citizen of the second most wealthiest nation of this continent - I can assure you that my opinion is not formed out of thin air. China is knocking and we are wasting time with such a child's play... Read the comments under channels like Russia Today or the Rebel Media. If you are a sane person, you will see why never not in a million years could I understand why someone would fall for such pathetic lies that only consist of hate...
"Populists are highly skilled at weaponizing these forms of resentment: their rhetoric
simultaneously aims to turn the growing anger at affluent people against the ruling elite and to turn the growing focus on ascriptive identity against immigrants as well as ethnic and religious minorities."
    Yascha Mounk
"The second decade of the 21st century has seen the rise of a counter-Enlightenment movement called populism, more accurately, authoritarian populism.24 Populism calls for the direct sovereignty of a country’s “people” (usually an ethnic group, sometimes a class), embodied in a strong leader who directly channels their authentic virtue and experience.
Authoritarian populism can be seen as a pushback of elements of human nature-tribalism, authoritarianism, demonization, zero-sum thinking-against the Enlightenment institutions that were designed to circumvent them. By focusing on the tribe rather than the individual, it has no place for the protection of minority rights or the promotion of human welfare worldwide. By failing to acknowledge that hard-won knowledge is the key to societal improvement, it denigrates “elites” and “experts” and downplays the marketplace of ideas, including freedom of speech, diversity of opinion, and the fact-checking of self-serving claims. By valorizing a strong leader, populism overlooks the limitations in human nature, and disdains the rule-governed institutions and constitutional checks that constrain the power of flawed human actors.
Populism comes in left-wing and right-wing varieties, which share a folk theory of economics as zero-sum competition: between economic classes in the case of the left, between nations or ethnic groups in the case of the right. Problems are seen not as challenges that are inevitable in an indifferent universe but as the malevolent designs of insidious elites, minorities, or foreigners. As for progress, forget about it: populism looks backward to an age in which the nation was ethnically homogeneous, orthodox cultural and religious values prevailed, and economies were powered by farming and manufacturing, which produced tangible goods for local consumption and for export."
    Steven Pinker
You know what makes this quite surreal?
I watched a video, just a few hours ago. The title? Populism is coming back
And in the comments hundreds of people cheering.
"The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan."
    Adolf Hitler
"Without a doubt he was a master of lies. When did I realize this? When I found thousands of people who talk like him, think like him and yet he is just an unknown corpse since 73 years ...
no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly and with unflagging attention. It must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over. Here, as so often in this world, persistence is the first and most important requirement for success."
    Adolf Hitler
Tell me Englishman... Have you already forgotten what you told us?
"Alternative facts and fake news are just other names for propaganda"
    Johnny Corn
You told us to listen to all sides, not just the one we want to hear. So tell me Englishman... What made you believe lies which I can here and now prove to be lies and nothing but lies? Was it the fear? Was it the hate? Did you think you would not be in control anymore? Something all nationalists forget. You can love your country and it's people. But a national state is just an institution. A construct, hold together by a simple believe.
"Patriotism is, fundamentally, a conviction that a particular country is the best in the world because you were born in it..."
    George Bernard Shaw
True the UK and my own nation as well as any other country that joins the EU will lose independence and power. But we, the people. We will become stronger than before. For we shall not speak with 10 million, 40, 60 or 80 million voices but with 510 million and perhaps in a century even Russia would join this voice. It is the will of the people, not the will of the nation. This is why I despise nationalism. For
    "Our true nationality is mankind."
    H.G. Wells
So let me finish this with the words of a man who is greater even in death than most of us ever will be...
"Nationalism is an infantile thing. It is the measles of mankind."
    Albert Einstein
Mark his words and mark them well.

@dennis wise an army provides union - I don't want to use it. And most of these were not truly European Rome how ever was. And by the gods, Rome was a blessing .
Also, America's history was less than peaceful, even in recent years. I'll come back to this one, but for now I will leave it here.

@dennis wise People always make the mistake of a direct comparison. In history, there are two kinds of comparisons. Are moral one with the ideologies and knowledge of today and one with the knowledge and morals at the time.
For most people who were no slaves, however, Rome provided peace and stability, it was relatively tolerant and while after a while a dictatorship, it started as a republic.
About the army - a European army is not a project because I intend to go to war with China, Russia or the middle east. It is necessary to provide a cultural link that in my mind already exists but many people are too hung up on old ideas while in reality, it would not matter to them if their governments are in London, Paris or Amsterdam.
This is something I can prove pretty in a very simple manner because most people don't care about their capital. Sure there government is located there and it is an important city but caring? No. Noone does that. Politicians in Warsaw or Madrid are not much different from my own. And you could still have local governments.
      But back to the topic.
There is no nation that is without flaw. None. I truly doubt it. Even the peaceful Swiss lent its armies to all monarchs in Europe. Perhaps there are a few exceptions but they are certainly so small, that it would not matter. What matters is, how power is used. I am against dictators even though I prefer a good dictator to a good government because the dictator will not be voted out of office but at the same time for the same reason, I prefer democracy because a bad dictator, no matter if he is loved by his people will do the world enormous amounts of harm.
As Churchill put it; while "the best argument against democracy is a conversation with the average voter" but "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others." and therefore I will
“Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty-never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”
      ― Winston Churchill
The new wave of populism is the greatest internal threat Europe faced since the second world war. And China the greatest economical and political one since the Soviet Union collapsed. An army is not only made to fight. It's a symbol.
Imagine German, French, Polish and American troops marching side by side down a valley while flags are waving above and a new french-germanic tank would role behind and the people cheer ( I am aware of the power of symbolism, there is a difference between lying which in my opinion is the definition of populism and using an image to transport an idea ) it would be a powerful event. It would change the way people would look at their neighbouring states. No longer as strangers but finally truly as allies. Too many people limit themselves to a few years but the west has to think bigger. Stop seeing Russia as an enemy but as a potential friend, even a member of the EU ( in say 50 to a 100 years, give or take a few decades and of cause a different course in foreign politics ) War is only an extension of politics but you must understand that I am a pacifist. Avoiding war is of the op most importance. War is a horrible, unpredictable and always hungry monster that feeds on the lives you throw before it.
But freedom is priceless, I will not let the lives who fought for peace in Europe go to waste by allowing nationalism to tear us apart. You see, I am very young. The young are always progressive, the old always conservative. And without a doubt - the old ways of thinking are dying. This will be the last battle in a long time. A battle not fought with weapons but with lies and truths, with words that are as impactful as a bombshell. I intend on making Europe great again, without firing a single shot or imprison a single foe.
I am not an extremist. But I love this continent and what it stands ( well should ) stand for. I know no people who are young who really want nationalism to return. None. Ironically, even the most nationalistic one believes in the potential of the EU. And I come from a more than conservative region trust me - when I say that the youth has the potential to change politics, I am not using empty phrasing. We are tired of centre politics who stagnate and the far right becoming ever more extreme while the far left ( luckily ) has gone almost extinct in European politics. If people like me can create a new, centre party that stands for Europe, we will succeed.
The far right is always so loud. Noisy. Like all extremists, they have no tact, no subtlety. They aren't even trying to hide their lies. That's makes them weaker than the old rights was before it came to power. I intend to use this. It's a powerful foe - no doubt about it. But it must perish for the future of the west.
'Now for one final point -
To stand against China, we need to be more united - and sadly parades are a universal language. I may be a pacifist but if Europe needs an army to overcome its differences - this is a sacrifice I am willing to make. Just like I am willing to sacrifice the national states for the sake of the people that live in them.
Self-interest is something we have had very little in the past. Almost too little. We watched while the forces of the US-backed with our blessing tore the middle east apart, in their struggle for oil and the "war on terror" (even less successful than the war on drugs and alcohol), how China took Tibet, how despite our efforts corruption and misery destroyed
Africa, how dictators and gangs threaten South America. I say no more. No longer can I watch how lobbyism feeds away from the income of the poor, how populists lie, cooperations only care about profit and our efforts to help feed the people that drive the refugees at the gates of our continent. No longer can I watch silently and hope that things are gonna change. I am not alone with this belief. Wish us luck - we may be the best chance the world will get. Chinas influence is growing and India has yet to awaken. We need to become powerful to keep the peace and to bring democracy. The US may have had this claim but we all no why we chuckle when we hear a redneck shout "MURICA" and mention the word freedom in the same sentence. I would have wished I could live a different life. Silent, with a nice girl, a family perhaps in a small city. But all I hold dear is at stake. I hate using big words - I really do. But its simply the truth. I am always truthful. I don't do this primarily for the Europeans even though I love this continent far more than my own nation. I do it because I want my kids to grow up free and hopefully even better than myself and I know if for one more day I would just sit and watch, I could not look them in the eyes when they grow up and ask me, why their neighbours are being sent to the camps and why China news sound always so positive and why I didn't do something. I am sick of it. I am sick of people moaning about politics but all they do is pick up a sign to get heard. We have enough bureaucrats. We need visionaries. I say this without any praise, I say this as the most truthful statement a realist like me who is neither left or right could make. We need people like me. And lots of them.
Think about what I wrote and what I meant when I said this.
I am only 18 and already so much is wrong with the world. I will not watch. I will act.

The EU is not without some near-fatal problems. First it is a conflicting and competing sovereignty with the nation states. The EU and the ECJ imposed unifying laws and systems that uprooted well-established national ones. This so-called attempt at harmonisation is disrespectful of the fundamental differences between countries’ systems.
Nor does the EU have sufficient democratic accountability to the people. If people don’t feel directly involved of course they are gonna be angry.
You seem to think that Brexit was doomed from the start. TBH the Brits are in a mess not because of Brexit, but because they have been awful at negotiating. The hard/soft border issue in Ireland really bogged down May. It is not like the Brits have no negotiating power against the EU as a whole. May just wanted to play it safe, which ended disastrously. If the populists in the UK are biased so are you.
