    When I first considered one of these, it was at a local gun shop the other day when I was buying a new pistol. The store personnel suggested a Holosun that retailed for $349, and I was pretty excited about it. My first impression was that it was a good quality sight, having the dot and the circlular green reticle pattern. They no longer come with the mounting plate and the store didn't have one on hand, so that allowed me to do some research. After reading some reviews and watching a bunch of videos about rotated reticles and gobs of glue, I'm a little leery of buying one now.

      I heard these things too and have the same apprehension. I bought one from a guy on line. I asked him if this optic had any of the quality control issues and he said no. Really hoping he is right and it is awesome. I am pretty new to holosun dots but it seems they are taking over the market. I have one of their 507k x2 and it is a good optic. I hate that it is a Chinese company but we ll see how it goes. Hopefully i ll get the 507t tomorrow

    Holosun is probably the only company from China that I'll be ok with buying from. Been using them for 5 years now and, personally, I've never had an issue. They've always had the best features and the most reasonable prices, especially back at a time when they were priced just a little bit higher than some of the crap red dots, like the Sightmarks and Leapers/UTG. Over the years, they've become my go-to for red dots. Particularly, because I like the circle dot reticle and Eotechs are a little too bulky for some applications. Anyways, great review man!

    I'm reading too many reviews about Holosun's half-assed QC lately. I'll probably take my chances on a SRO with 2.5 MOA dot for my VP-9.The only concern is if the sight will get beat-up by ejecting brass. I'll make sure to put a B.R.O.S cover on before shooting, should help.

    • @graycattactical1614
      @graycattactical1614  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thought about that as well and had similar concerns. I also played with one in store and just thought it was too big for a carry gun. I wish trijicon would make a v3 RMR with the top loading battery.

  • @gristelli

    congratulations for the review, by far the most technical in terms of measurements and adjustments to the weapon. In the last few weeks I've been racking my brains over whether to get a trijicon rmr type 2 for my masada, or a holosun 508t x2. One of the things that worries me is that the masada, according to the manufacturer, does not have the Holsun in the list of compatible red dots (even knowing that the footprint of both is the same, only changing the length of the screw (a detail that if not observed can ruin the pistol.) I appreciate if you can help with any suggestion or tip. Best wishes from Brazil.

    Anyone else have the Holosun 507c/508t and find the circle ring with the dot to be wayyy larger than it appears in these videos on TH-cam? My reticle when set on the 32 moa circle with the dot takes up nearly 3/4ths of the glass. In these videos the circle and dot are a fraction of that size.

    • @graycattactical1614
      @graycattactical1614  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it has to do with the perspective. Since the dot/reticle are projected on the the glass, it will always be the same absolute size. The size that it appears to you (or the the camera) depends on the distance from the glass.

    I am curious to know your experience with Holosun’s customer service. Their optics, from all the reviews, appear to be tanks. BUT, I haven’t seen any videos talking about the customer service aspect of the company. Accidents do happen and even a very rugged optic may have the misfortune of breaking/cracking or in some other way harshly damaging the optic. I have read their warranty statement and it does not cover accidental damage. The best warranty is the one you don’t have to use, but you might. All that to say, how is their customer service if one became damaged from a drop or being run into something? How long would it take to get one back (Leupold has always been very fast - usually less than a week)? This appears to be a possible problem with owning this optic. Lastly, if one must use their customer service, where do you send it? I am seriously leaning towards the 508t, or maybe the 509t, but I haven’t been able to find the above questions answered. 2 more questions - what is the thickness of the rear portion of the holosun vs the rmr? And therefore, what height back-up irons would one need to be able to use them and which brands have those irons. Thanks for a great video. You covered information that others have not. Keep up the good work.

    • @graycattactical1614
      @graycattactical1614  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate the thoughtful input! I sent my 508T off to Holosun's facility in California right after filming this video. They've had it in their possession for 20 business days now. Their site and their customer service reps both estimate 10-12 business day turnaround for warranty claims. Each time I contact them to ask about the status of mine or whether they have replacements in stock, I'm met with a copy-pasted response asking for 5-7 additional business days due to unusually high volume. This is concerning because it either means that they have a high volume of warranty claims or an that they're prioritizing new sales over warranties. I do plan on posting an update once this is resolved, but it's getting to a point where I'm considering asking for a refund rather than waiting indefinitely for a replacement.
      As for the thickness of that back section, I can try to update my spreadsheet when/if I get a replacement. From memory, I'd say the difference is in the range of 0.100" (Holosun is a bit thicker). I can use the same irons for either setup. Which brand and heights you go with depend on the gun, your mounting method (i.e. direct mill or MOS-type plate). In any case, I always recommend Dawson Precision. They make quality sights for most pistols in a huge variety of heights, widths, depths, etc.

    • @whliving
      @whliving 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@graycattactical1614 - thanks for the quick response. I contacted them today to see how they were on the phone and to gauge their responses. I believe your copy/paste description is apt. I felt the same way when speaking to them - not very conversational. The guy I spoke to stated that standard suppressor sights would be sufficient, but not provide the ability for a co-witness with the dot. I’m not sure that higher sights (above standard suppressor sights) would be necessary since I don’t think I would use them often - they are for emergencies. Further, a very tall front post may be a distraction. With regard to their turn around time, he stated that it depended on extent of repair, amount of repairs they had, blah, blah, blah...., but generally 2-3wks. I also asked, after explaining that I had read several times over their warranty info, if they would warranty repair/replace an optic that had been damaged by accidental damage (drops, run ins with hard objects, etc). He stated they would. He didn’t leave me with much confidence. I felt he was less than candid and asked if they would send me something that stated that - he said he had nothing to send that would state that the would repair/replace under warranty. I’m not sure what to make of his answers. I’m still leaning towards buying it. As I said in my post, it appears to be built like a tank. Especially after watching Sage Dynamics testing. I don’t plan on using the warranty, but no one ever does. It would be in their best interest to make clear in writing that they will repair/replace. They are still building a following and negative reviews of their service won’t help them grow as a company.

    • @graycattactical1614
      @graycattactical1614  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whliving Every time I've called them, I got a message saying that "due to unusually high call volumes" they are not currently taking calls and to contact them via their sales email instead haha.
      I finally got a response that they're sending my replacement or repaired optic (I'm still not sure which) this week. I'd say that I'm somewhat disappointed with their CS overall. I know that other companies like Trijicon and Vortex have much better CS and warranties, but at the end of the day, the actual usability of the optic is what matters most to me.
      As for the iron sight issue, you might consider just getting the cheapest set possible to test out. As long as you know the heights of both, you can actually use Dawson's calculator to figure out what heights you'd need to adjust POI. Sure, you'd end up wasting the first set, but you'd at least know for sure that you got the right height the second time. If it's at all helpful, I have a video of my P10C where I posted the backup iron specs that give me the lowest possible cowitness with the 1st gen 508T.
