haha, glad you enjoyed this performance. I was totally captivated by this performance when I first saw it. He is so not self-conscious, so totally unconcerned with looking cool, it really is pure.
years ago I posted this song on my facebook feed sort of mocking the lead singer's performance, but over the years I have absolutely fallen in love with it. The song is fantastic, and his commitment to selling it to the audience is admirable. I think an underrated part is Letterman's reaction. He couldn't love it any more than he does. He's giddy when he comes out there. I am now madly in love with the song and even more in love with the performance. Great call on this one.
For me this is one of the greatest live performances I've ever seen. I think about it all the time. Watch it over and over. Incredible song and the emotion is delivered unchecked.
I randomly saw this Letterman performance on TH-cam. Which many people did. And it jump started Future Islands career. It was the first time they were on TV. Fast forward a few years. I turned 3 friends on to them cuz this performance. And we all went to the Greek Theater in LA to see them. Met people who were at the Greek that found them here on the Letterman video too. Greek sold out. Largest crowd they enter had. Sam the singer cried on stage saying it was the largest audience he’s had for their own band. They are coming back to the Greek this September. And one of my friends I turned on to the band bought the tickets for me this time. Going full circle. Best live band I’ve seen.
I’ve watched this performance dozens of times and yet, watching you watch this for the first time was like watching it for the first all over again. Truly a great performance.
One of my favorites of all time. (I am 65 years old) David Letterman and Conan O'Brien were great for bringing on obscure artists. (i caught Talib Kweli on Conan one night, and brought his book, Vibrate Higher; and learned a lot) Hands down ‼️ It would be hard to find a more, honest, raw, soulful performance than this.. I know music, having been born in Detroit- Motown, with a musician father, in 1957. I would love to see a collaboration between Sam and Brittany Howard from Alabama Shakes. She is another spectacular talent. I am just glad that the tradition of authentic music lives on.
One of my favourites too, and i am 65 too!. I have discovered that in my old age, I seek out more genres of music than I ever did when young and the more I look around, the more I discover that there is so much out there. African beats, Arunachal Pradesh up and coming musicians, I could go on and on. And I suppose like most my age, I am conscious that there is SO MUCH to learn. It all serves to keep me alive.
the comments on that video are some of my favorite on youtube lmao. the singer is such a captivating performer! he also raps under the name Hemlock Ernst
I’ve been a fan of Future Islands for a while, since I think around the time of this broadcast. As a Brit, we have to rely on TH-cam to get the Letterman shows, but they also performed the same year on Jools Holland’s show on BBC2. Since then I’ve got most of their records and seen them 3 times live. Sam and the Boys always knock the tunes out of the park, with soulful lyrics and a groove no other bands can match. 🎉
This performance on Letterman led me to Future Islands Pitchfork Paris [in costume] video. That set will always be tops in my history search. Incredible
I'm just viewing for the first time. I just discovered Samuel T. Herring through his collaboration with BADBADNOTGOOD on "Time Moves Slow". If you haven't heard it yet, you MUST check it out. This man's voice is awesome! He can go from the soulfulness of Bill Withers to the grittiness of Tom Waits. Thanks for sharing this!
Big yes. Remember the first viewing on the BBC Later show and my eyes were out on stalks. Great tune and he is incredibly captivating performer. Full of surprises.
I’m sure someone has already told you, this video being a year old, that Sam Herring is also a huge hip hop head and performs under the name Hemlock Ernst.
Just as entertaining live. The 'Singles' tour, on a outdoor stage in the middle of a rainforest in Vancouver. Great band. If you ever get a chance to see a show at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park, go!
I'd never heard of these guys until I saw them recently on a late night show promoting their new album, I was really impressed. Some of their stuff reminds me of New Order, whom I love. I'm looking forward to checking out more of their music.
@Alxnder7 These guys are legendary, and Samuel delivers with an intensity that is like an emotional earthquake. Maybe my favorite band of this century. Going to see them on March 16!! ❤✨
I was a fan as soon as I heard this song on Alt Nation when it first came out. One of my favorite songs of all time and should have won song of the year.
The song is great. The band is tight! The singer is....AaAmazing. I "discovered" the band a couple of month ago, when I heard part of "The Tower" on the radio, and had to hear the whole song. I got it, loved it, saw the video, and wanted to see more of them...then I saw this Letterman clip. I am a FAN! So is Dave Letterman! 😊
Some people may know this but Sam Herring has also done a bunch of incredible underground rap songs including an album with producer Kenny Segal. This is as talented as a person we'll prolly ever see
First saw them live on Jools Hollands show on the BBC late at night and woke my wife up to hear them.....ive been badgering them to release a live album as their studio stuff doesnt have Tims rough vocals 😁
I got goose bumps the first time i saw this performance . I’m so bored by a lot of live performances from bands . Like move around or breaking something for Christ’s sake ! We’re paying you for this stuff lol . Drummer spin a stick or two lol
I first heard this on KUTX, #ATX, loved it, this live on Letterman knocked it out of the park! These guys were on World Cafe tonight, they have new stuff, check it out!
And thats why they should release a live album of their fan faves....the studio albums feature Tim with a rested voice but thats not what you get at the live shows 😈👍
He was actually holding back. This guy will cry with emotion on stage. I saw them in a small venue with barely any people there and be gave everything to that stage. Dude was breaking down into tears while absolutely shrieking and it was all gorgeous to listen to.
Excelente. Fue el primer video que vi de esta banda, aunque la segunda canción de ellos, y ahora soy fan de esta banda. Forma peculiar de bailar y cantar...solo me siento un poco triste por el resto de la banda que no se mueve, pareciera que no lo disfrutan.
haha, glad you enjoyed this performance. I was totally captivated by this performance when I first saw it. He is so not self-conscious, so totally unconcerned with looking cool, it really is pure.
Pure af lol I loved it, this man does not care what people think about him 🔥🔥🔥
@KomodoDragon keep the negativity to yourself
Reminds me of Ian Curtis or Thome Yorke, being lost in the music spontaneously dancing and enjoying the moment.

In my opinion it was terrible and kind of silly with the dramatic voice
@@exmodule6323 cool! To each their own. I hope you find something you can be more positive about
@@johnmcgill900 Yeah, more positive about, the actual studio version. No silly theatrics
Same here man, he’s mesmerising.

I remember seeing this on Letterman and I was blown away, he's such a charismatic singer.

Every single song on the album SINGLES is flawless
One of my favorites of all time.

That collab would be melting minds

Hands down best letterman performance I’ve ever seen
The killers miss atomic bomb is pretty 🔥
I think Letterman agreed too
Really? Then you haven't seen much. Letterman asked The Heavy for an encore. The Heavy blew the stage out.
The lyrics are brilliant!!
"The winter will crave what's gone..."!!
Not seen The Beastie Boys then?
the comments on that video are some of my favorite on youtube lmao. the singer is such a captivating performer! he also raps under the name Hemlock Ernst
And boy he has some fucking bars.
Wait, I didn't know that
Yeah I grew up with the lead singer we were in the same kindergarten class together. He’s a complete genius and started out free styling
The man leaves it all out on the field.
If you don't know Future Islands I don't know what to tell you... they are magic... as seen by Letterman's reaction which as you know is RARE.
This is who my old band, Zack Mexico, toured with in Europe a few years back. Super nice guys.
Whoa, I know your band. Love your sound. (I probably heard you on KEXP.)
new to the channel but loved how you stuck with this performance all the way through and appreciate it. subscribed
Love that you listened and didn’t stop the performance. Got my follow
Much respect for reacting to Future Islands
I love Dave's reaction! Great band, thanks for reacting!
It still gives me goose bumps in 2023
“I’ll take all of that ya got” from Dave is one of the coolest compliments I’ve ever heard.
expression at about 1:20 says it all. when someone starts to realize the deep emotional impact of this tune. incredible song.

Can't help but feel something listening ti this band ❤
Wow, what an emotional and exhilarating performance totally blown away. Totally memerised love this band ❤️
my first expose to future islands....instant love..got all their albums..a brillant unique band
I don't know if Sam grew up in the church, but knowing he's from North Carolina I can really see a Southern preacher influence in his performance.
' love this song and the passion in the performance.....sure does it for me!
Big yes. Remember the first viewing on the BBC Later show and my eyes were out on stalks. Great tune and he is incredibly captivating performer. Full of surprises.
Epic Performance, love Future Islands!
Never saw this but it doesn't surprise me. Letterman had some great bands on his show
This is fantastic, the strength that a human can have made a song ,touching...

Future Islands 👍
I saw this when it came out, never will forget it, you can tell they knew this was their shot and he went all in

As Hemlock Ernst. He does use Sam Herring here and there but if you search Hemlock Ernst you'll find a bunch of stuff
I will never forget that night in 2014. Pulled me out of a dead sleep like the Sam heavens had opened up.
Hometown heroes. Needed to hear this today.
i really appreciate you not pausing the video every 20 seconds to insert your commentary. Taking notes is a good format.
Not when it means he's not watching.
@@flyingintheface6139and missing little details that totally matter. 🙏🏻
Gave 110% to that performance

Best performance ever this, his own style, just dynamite
Can’t take your eyes off him, can you? The man is charismatic for sure. Dave loved him.
Loved your analysis. Subscribed.
Watch him on theJools Holland show in England this is tame by comparison
Thumbnail says it pretty good.
He went there alright. Climbed all the way the fuck over. 😂 good shit
Have a look at them performing seasons live on Jools Holland , amazing 🙏
Seeing them in Phoenix soon, yes! Letterman before he became a hobo recluse.
Sam Herring has a great fucking voice¡¡¡

One of best performances i ever seen, did he just grunt?
He was actually holding back. This guy will cry with emotion on stage. I saw them in a small venue with barely any people there and be gave everything to that stage. Dude was breaking down into tears while absolutely shrieking and it was all gorgeous to listen to.
I'll take all of that ya got
If I had to define Sam Herring as a performer, it would be the shapeless Shakespearian.
Future Islands is one of those bands that gets stuck under your skin and just stays there.
superb song
Drunk Uncle…great band 😂
You would do yourself a favor to see more of them. This is not a "one hit wonder". Haha
You keep looking away at some of the best parts !!
That death metal growl...
The dance moves 🔥
Great reaction 👍🏻
Too cool!
Excelente. Fue el primer video que vi de esta banda, aunque la segunda canción de ellos, y ahora soy fan de esta banda. Forma peculiar de bailar y cantar...solo me siento un poco triste por el resto de la banda que no se mueve, pareciera que no lo disfrutan.
