Interesting fact about this boss fight. Did you know the statues are actually of Mantises face? With bands around them in story your not actually shooting the heads off. You’re shooting the bands off exposing the statues which are distracting Mantis.

Back in the days, playin trough game with my mate, we barely knew any english so we never knew about switching controller trick, or statues trick even. Somehow after about 2 hours we managed to beat him "normally".
i remember bruteforcing my way through once too, wanted to know if it was possible took me a while too, and at the time i was playing the first 3 Metal Gear Solids non-stop
Mantis reads the controller not the memory card. The memory card trick is if you have certain Konami games on it. That Mantis will mention in the cutscene. But in the fight he is reading your controller inputs. Which is why you’re told to change the controller port by Campbell. This other way with the statues was put in the game for people who can’t I’m guessing. Like if someones port 2 isn’t working for example. The statues method stops mantis from being able to read the controller.
It makes sense because it is konami number one and two if you have a save on your card from that game mantis will mention it when you he reads your mind
It's incredible how this Ps1 masterpiece still looks really good. (By the way, there's no lights in the room nor reflections on the marble floor in the Gamecube remake and all this scene looks quite less colored).
I believe the reflections in this area, and the cyborg ninja boss room are done by placing light textures beneath the floor awhile making the floor slightly transparent. You dont notice it because of the black void of the game. Out of all companies, Konami handled the console limitations the best imo. With both this, and Silent Hill being prime examples of clever game development.
I always thought it was odd that the statues were wearing gas masks now it makes total sense it was a clue. If you think about it those statues mirror The Sorrow/Mantis dolls from MGS4… simply genius.
I remember trying to find a way to beat him without switching ports as a kid, just to see how far they thought ahead. I remember actually tagging him with a grenade and thought it worked. But even though his health bar drops, right afterwards his health fills back up.
There is also a legendary codec call that probably only my cousin has seen, in which Campbell Tells you this trick if you can't switch controller port. He says something like "Snake, considering that It was so hard for you to switch controller port, here is another method..." My cousin get stuck for hours there because he didn't know what a controller was and he thought it was an ingame item to retrieve xD Kojima really thought of everything
It’s a codec call that happens after dying and continuing. And Naomi tells the player about the statues. And explains the statue heads. I came across it by trying to get every codec call in the game. With deliberate deaths and doing things differently. I’m still not confident I’ve seen everything in this game. And I’ve played it a lot. In the ocelot fight I was surprised when I deliberately walked into the c4. And on the continue screen Ocelot says “you idiot!” 😂

How this call works is once you’re fighting mantis. After getting the call where he tells you to change the controller port. Die continue don’t touch the statues. Start the mantis fight. And keep calling Campbell. Eventually you’ll get that call.
the first time I played this game, my dumb child brain couldn't think outside the box enough to figure out the second controller port or statue trick so I just punched Mantis until I beat him, only getting in the tail end of the punch combo in each time and tanking alot of ration heals until I finally won, it wasn't until I read an article in Game Informer that I finally found out about the true intended ways to beat him XD
My ps1 had a broken second controller port so I couldn't use the original trick. However, after failing multiple times, you get a call to destroy masked statues.
Back in either 1998 or 1999 I barely knew any English, so I had no idea what Campbell is saying. And therefore 11yo me had to fight Mantis normally. Needless to say, it took me some 30-40 minutes to beat him and I was exhausted. Imagine my surprise when somewhere in mid/late 00s (when I already had a decent knowledge of English) I've stumbled upon my old PS1 and decided to replay good ol' MGS, and figured out you could just switch ports to defeat Mantis with ease. And now in 2021 I've learned this approach. Damn. I'm a dad now, and my small daughter is slowly getting into video games as well. When I'll introduce her to MGS in near future (when she'll get a bit older to understand more complex games like MGS), should I tell her about tricks to defeat Mantis easily, or let her have the same experience I had? :))
You can defeat him anyway without switching port or doing any other trick, mantis doesnt avoid all attacks even when he can "read your mind" it just takes friggin ages and I used to dread this fight as a result because I was a wee lad back when I was playing this and didn't know that they tell you about the port changing thing.
I’m not sure but It wouldn’t surprise me if there is games that had it. And with Metal Gear series known for 4th wall breaks. And first person view button and it sometimes feels like a movie in ps1 graphics. It wouldn’t surprise me if they did add rag doll.

I beat him the first time without switching controller ports. There is a very small window where you can punch him after he throws the chairs around if I recall, and it takes FOREVER. Didn't find out about the controller port thing until years later.
Funnily enough if you play the ps3 port with a ps4 controller you can't switch ports as you need to press the PS button(which doesn't work on a ps4 controller) to change the controller settings instead of just plugging it into the 2nd usb port

The easy way to beat Psycho Mantis without changing the controller port is to stand behind the chair that is at the desk. I never knew about changing controller ports until years later when I read about Metal Gear Solid cheats online. As a kid, I simply went to the top of the screen and stood behind the chair at the desk. Everything Psycho Mantis threw at you would hit the chair and break. Since everything missed you retained all your health and could just shoot him with the pistol. In other words...you don't have to outthink a guy that can read your mind...you just have to not be a dumbass and know about strategic positioning.
im glad Konami thought to include more then one way to beat Mantis on the odd chance you were in a situation where Controller port 2 was unusable, many games that require you to reset the game to progress never consider the possibility of that option not existing in the future (X-men on the Genesis comes to mind) XD
I figured out how to beat him normally, without tricks, because I thought that this was just how the boss fight was suppose to be. I'm over forty years old. A complicated, difficult boss fight is not new to me, especially after having to chase Revolver Ocelot around a room rigged with explosives, and having to learn Greyfox's attack pattern in order to fist fight him properly.
Why did I remember you can just press the first person view (triangle I guess) and your vision is switched to mantis's instead. So you will know to which spot he is heading. I usually just toss a grenade to the spot he is heading. Cmiiw last time I played was more than 5 years ago
I remember beating him as a teen without any of the tricks, but now I'm pissed off I can't do the same thing as an adult, and "switching controls" on the emulator is a pain in the ass. ePSXe won't allow it midgame. I can't even shoot off the gas masks. Do I need to die one time first?

It should work on normal difficulty. I was playing on normal when I recorded this video. As long as you got the codec call from Campbell saying to change controller port. Then die and continue it should work.

see next time you go to shoot the statues. can shoot them during the mantis fight. But during the fight before shooting them you can get a codec call from Naomi telling you to shoot them. That call has a bit of Mantis lore.

I dunno I never played twin snakes. It might seeing as twin snakes is a remake. But it might not. No harm on trying to see if they included it. How I came across this on the original is when Campbell told me to switch ports. I didn’t to see what happens after dying and continuing I kept calling him. And Naomi told me to shoot the statue heads. Which the heads came off.Then I tried the trick again in another save file told to switch port died and continued but this time after continuing I shot the heads without calling and it worked. It very well might work with it being part off game story. In the call I mentioned with Naomi she says the statues are of Mantis’s face. She says when you shoot the bands off the statues will distract Mantis. So in this version even though it appears you’re shooting the heads off. You’re really shooting the bands off.
And with speed runs the first fight can be skipped. And she can be killed by using a glitch which allows you to run towards her with a sniper. Which means both sniper wolf fights can be skipped.
See when you use hand to hand to beat him. When he says hurt me more use fists until the last one then shoot him. It’s only good at that point in my opinion. I’d use chaff and fists then when he is no longer moving. Fists twice then the third a few famas shots.

You can also shoot him with the last 3 rounds in the FAMAS. For whatever reason he can't dodge the tracer rounds.
I was stupid enough that I had to find out the hard way with all of the "out of game" hints

Since everything missed you retained all your health and could just shoot him with the pistol. In other words...you don't have to outthink a guy that can read your mind...you just have to not be a dumbass and know about strategic positioning.

First time playthrough I had no idea that was a possibility. Never listened to the colonel at all. Took like 20 tries but I beat him

Wait... this is similar to Seath The Scaleless in Dark souls 1. You can only beat seath if you shoot a specific crystal down in his 2nd encounter.

I tried kicking him to death and it shaved a good portion of his HP off so if you’re really patient and really bored have at it
