Just bought a used epi LP standard gold top for half the price of new. Thing is blowing me away. It’s the 50s style one. So the frets are wider. Two of my buddies that own epi LPs couldn’t get over how much better it felt with the wider frets, which I didn’t realize when I got it. I just knew, this one feels good when I go up and down the neck. Very happy with the purchase and performance so far.
I would have expected the Gubson to blow the Epiphone out of the water. It didn't, to my ears. Yes, it is a superior guitar, but I didn't hear a $4000 difference. Admittedly I have the '50s Epi Goldtop, and have never played a Gibson custom shop, so can't compare the feel, playability etc.
Absolutely a Great Epiphone guitar . . the older i get and the better guitar manufacturing is getting i prefer to stay with these Epiphone inspired . I do have 2 Gibsons and quite honestly both were immediately in shop for complete set-up . every Epihone inspired ive had shipped just needed cleaning, fret polish and strings GO . . Headstock envy has waned . . . lmao great comparison
The problem with these kind of comparison videos is that the more money a guitar cost doesn't mean it's going to sound that much better, it's in the feel, the woods, the finish, the way it makes you feel when you play it.
You’re so right. It’s in the inferior craftsmanship. It’s in the level of disappointment you get from paying all that money for the most basic fails in build quality.
@@srh361 my apologies if I’ve misunderstood your comment. You are correct. I’ve not played a Gibson custom shop. They are circa $10k in Australia and I have no confidence in Gibson’s ability to make a $5k guitar let alone a $10k guitar.

Thanks for a great video which helped me to decide on the epi. I did not really hear a major difference between the two les Paul's. The only major difference was the name and price.
custom shop les pauls are next level. with that being said i played a bunch of les pauls back to back to back against the epiphone and didn’t notice a huge difference, definitely not one to justify the huge price difference. epiphone with a solid setup and maybe a great set of pickups if you wanted to go crazy would be the best deal in my eyes. though if you can afford the real deal why not.
Laboratory, finish materials, hardware, fingerboard wood types don't get the price 5 times or above, That Gibson Padgett does so you pay for the name of Gibson
Remember like any machine a guitar is going to be bound by certain laws of physics, sure you might find something that plays a little smoother or has a little bit better quality hardware or finish quality, but in the end, those differences are not multitudes more improvement. When you buy something like a Gibson most of that premium is going just towards access to the name, that’s it. Tell me what’s more painful, playing a $500 Epiphone knowing you don’t have a Gibson, but still sounds and plays great, or spending thousands of dollars on a Gibson that you’re afraid to touch or if you blemish it, you go into panic mode. because you spent so much on it. The way for people with limited disposable income to obtain a Gibson is just to buy a used one for a good price.
I think it's all in the player. Give someone like Joe Bonomassa an Epiphone LPS and he'll always sound phenomenal. Give me a $ 4000-plus Gibson LPCS and in my hands, it'll sound awful.
If they had the same pickups in them and the Epi was gone over to get the set up dialed, it's gonna come down to feel/balance and personal preference. There's gonna be good, and not so good ones, no matter the name on the headstock. That's just the reality of guitars. Maybe the Epiphones are a better gamble for some people?

I would think the Bridge and stop tail would also be a benefit in swapping? Epi uses cheap metals. Even IF you went all out and replaced those and the pot's and even the nut and pu's you still are way under 4K. The real matter is resale. The GIbson is the better investment overall.

Throw in a couple of second hand Gibson or boutique pickups, and for a couple of hundred bucks it will be close to impossible to hear the difference between the two. The gibby will depreciate more than the totalt cost of the Epi just by leaving the store, so if the feel of the Epi really suits someone, it will be well worth doing it.

Go for the Standard 50s. I have the Goldtop. Fantastic guitar ! Pure Slash tone from AFD. Low output pickups with great chimey tone, crystal clear highs and enough bite to cut through the mix. Is unreal how good this Epi LP Standard 50s can sound.
The epiphone had the richer tone. Not the les paul. Les paul brighter sound. Prefer the epiphone. Les Paul's are a rip off. And not worth the extra money.
Nice playing!! Going from the Epi to Custom is a big stretch. Epi vs Tribute or Studio might a better comparison. I seemed to notice the biggest difference when in the middle (neck & bridge) mode. The Epi just didn't seem to have the same oomph as the Custom. Of course you can compensate for some of that richness or oomph with volume, eq, and effects, or mods, but you'll never quite get the same richness or headroom of the Custom. Still not bad for a guitar that costs closer to $600 than the Custom at $4,000 or even a Standard at close to $2,700.
you could've just compared the Les Paul Standard 50's to the Epiphone, the law of dominishing returns on Reissue. your just paying for a relic, there's no difference between the Gibson VOS and the Les Paul Standard 50's. other than that, it's not even close. the Epiphone is good for what it is.
Would have preferred to hear each guitar individually without the distraction of the backing tracks. Too much going on to focus on the sound of the guitar.
Do you have the gold top? I´m interested in it, but it looks kind of yellow in many videos, especially compared to the more coppery finish of the Gibson.
There is a little difference in sound with the Gibson and there is the whole resale thing of it if you can afford the Gibson go with that.Personally for just playing at home or at a bar or something I can’t justify the extra money. I am a fan of Epiphones so I have a bias and they really do sound very similar
The Gibson is timeless and is prettier for sure. When the Gibson is not in the room, it simply just doesn’t matter. My simple guitar rule is 1-2 Epis for every Gibson and you’ll never regret that Epiphone purchase and you will have an arsenal of fun. That is what it’s all about. It’s both sides of the same bragging coin. Well done on this video too!

People say the Epiphone sounds good for the money. In reality it "sounds great" period! It just happens to be about 1/4 of the price of the Gibson.
$4K is definitely beyond the point of diminishing returns! The Epi holds its own for sure!

The Epi sounds great! The Gibson sounds better; the finish is the difference. Lacquer, the highs are warmer.

The Eplphone sounds really good for the cash. Much better then the past versions. But still you can't beat the sound the feel of a Custom Shop Gibson!

I think that I detect a little bit more clarity/pureness in the tones created by the Gibson. I own an Epiphone Standard.
"richness" is a good descriptor.

Yes when Joe demostrated his new Epi "Lazarus" he sounded exactly the same as when he played the Original Gibson version.
The Epiphone Custom modern and prophecy Models are all high end guitars..

Switch the pots in that Epi and it'll probably get even closer to the Gibby.

The Gibson looks and no doubt feels better, but there is very little in it sound wise.
Save the extra cash with the Epi and buy a nice amp some brews and hooch. Win win situation.
