When I bought the Altezza it was to take the beams out and put into my TE Wagon. The 3S is the perfect engine for those smaller Toyotas it was just never quite enough in a car of this size and running larger wheels.
They improve the handling by removing the ability of your old worn out bushings to move around under load. Those old bushings can allow your whole sub to shift under hard loads this can create rear steer and other undesirable handling characteristics.
