Practice Notes 44 | Improvising in the Style of Bach
Today I thought I would share with you a full play-through of one of my favorite pieces by J.S. Bach, his Prelude and Fugue in C Major from WTC Book II. I then show examples of how I would take a few measures of Bach and improvise in a way that mimics his style. This is a practice I have been doing recently to get more familiar with his language, and it's a neat way to get to know the harmonic progressions he uses.

That is one of my favorite pieces and beautifully played! The kind of improvisation that you are doing is the way everyone should be taught to play classical music. It’s true to the tradition of the era and teaches people to understand that this music is alive and can be embellished upon. We need a new generation of performer composers on the keyboard. Keep going!

Couldn't agree more, Rick. Once upon a time, there was basically no distinction between musical training as a player and training as a composer. As happy as I am to live in the 21st century, it's ironical that I need to go back hundreds of years to find an approach to learning music that is "forward thinking".

    Hi Nahre,
To tell the truth I just came here to listen to your exquisite piano interpretations, but then as I was following the piano score as you played, (reminiscing the times I had to read scores of songs for my orchestration class in college) as if by magic your piano score turned into a chord chart for the song. AWESOME! As a singer piano player (slash everything else well at least in my mind) I constantly play songs reading the words, melody line, and chord cymbals (opps I mean symbols). (lightbulb above the head moment) Hey maybe I can play this along with her. I'm pretty good with chords and inversions. So my life's mission for the moment is to play along while reading the chords. This is so awesome and I get to hang out with one of my favorite piano players at the same time. Thank you for the many awesome videos, and a special thank you to your piano teacher. I heard you mention (not sure whether it's she or he) But I thought it was worth mentioning. You've sort of become my teacher, so I thought I'd give credit where credit is due. As always love seeing you, hearing your voice, and watching you play. Your loving fan (and new student).

Wonderful performance and great method of practice.! It also extremely helpful in retaining the piece in ones repertoire when one knows the "chord changes" just like in popular music and jazz. I remember at the age of 15, my first jazz piano teacher, Sanford Gold, gave me Bach Inventions to learn and told me to put in the chord symbols. I was like "What chords?" He had me do the same to Chopin etudes. Great way to learn!

Hi Nahre, your channel has become one of my favorites, thank you so much for your efforts!
This particurarly approach to improvisation reminded me of the practice of Partimento, which is a kind of figured bass used in the Naples conservatories for exercise. There's a study from Robert Gjerdingen called "Music in the Galant Style", which classify those partimenti into various schemata based on their function. For example, the I V/IV IV V I over the tonic pedal, is called "quiescenza", which means dormancy in italian.

4:48 This progression you have found at the start of the prelude would be called a “quiescenza” by schema theorists like Robert Gjerdingen. It is most frequently used as an appendix to the final cadence of a piece, because the tonic pedal helps to release energy, but it is also sometimes used as an opening gambit, as it is here 😊

very nice. it would be great to make a collection of bach pieces that as their first move stretch to the "subdominant". doesn't happy a lot and seems to be responsible for a lot of the warmth of this movement.
i have two suggestions for you: play bach on the harpsichord under the guidance of a true harpsichord player.
learn and use thorough bass theory for this music.
both might help incorporate bach style more as your own natural language.

If someone wants to really learn how to compose from not only Bach style, but all boroque composers and many others from the classic and romantic era, then he must learn partimento and basso continuo. Stop thinking in chords and start thinking in the bass and intervals. Go study Giacomo Insanguine, Giovani Furno, Leonardo Leo, Fenaroli books and also go play and listen to Bach, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Pergolesi, Purcell, Corelli, Marchand, Jean Baptiste Lully, Carpentier, and others composer from Baroque era.
