We have a thing they call 'shrinkflation' here in the US. Sometimes the maker doesn't increase the price of the package, they just put less product in. A package of cookies I purchase once per week was US$1.00 before the virus, now the same package is US$1.75. Some bread rolls I buy was US$1.00 before, now US$1.25. 32oz bag of whole bean coffee was US$14.95, now is US$19.75.

Ok sure size or even quality so let expensive to use less of a ingredient but ok Russia it comes down to over time imports or exports so if you import everything and only export little your already way behind and ok things like government or weapons those are not free so basically it's all debt and sure Russia it's funny ruble thinking it can increase its value just by putting a higher number and that fails and fails the longer you hide it so telling propaganda while sure is useful over time those population actually believes it so ok they eat more and go on without worrying or doing more so things that can fix it you have people doing nothing and sure they will have food for a while but when you lose imports bc no money and for Russia it will take a while bc they produce some just not enough so take like repopulation so some but not enough and when I say not enough they should be like five births for one loss right now

Svetlana, I always enjoy your "grocery store" tours. I do understand that Russian wages are so much lower than those in the West. However, if I were able to travel right now to Saint Petersburg and exchange my U.S. $ for rubles I would be buying quite a lot of the smoked salmon, marinated seafood and even some "kielbasa". The prices compared to what we pay in the States are extraordinarily much lower. Take care and have a pleasant and rewarding week.

Well, it's not completely "unjustified". This is what happens when governments order people to stay home (needlessly) and then print trillions of dollars to pay them unemployment. It's economics 101. More dollars (trillions payed in "unemployment" benefits) chasing fewer goods (economies shut down around the world producing nothing to very little) = hyper inflation. It's going to be at least 5+ years til the supplies are back to pre-virus levels, if they ever do. It's likely to get worse still before it gets better.

Pricing is similar in the USA I think a lie better prices in Russia.
The true difference is based on your salary/income and how much money you bring home versus how much you have to pay for food, gas, rent etc.
I like to look at it as a percentage of income to determine the real cost or the true prices based on what percentage we pay. So if you normally pay 10% of your salary for necessary items and suddenly now it’s 20% of your salary then that’s a real problem.
I do like the fact that even with sanctions that the government is trying to place on other countries/governments that the people become very resourceful, and still have the things they need to survive. Hopefully this will all resolve soon.

I can buy a salmon meat 10$ for 1 kg, same money I would spend for 200-300g at a local restaurant, same goes with a beef meat its x4-5+ times the price I can buy it and cook it myself. if you want to visit Russia while staying in a hotel or rent an apartment (which is popular) prices to feed your self are fine. beware of girls that want to dine with you, that can take you to a certain place (they choose) and you may end up to pay a huge check at the end for nothnig

Russian Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian cuisine is a traditional dish that was cooked in a Russian oven. Among the Turkic peoples, katyk is made from an analogue of melted milk.
The product has a beige color, a characteristic smell and taste. Melted milk is well stored, it does not sour longer in comparison with whole or boiled milk. There is consumed mainly in the form of a drink. It is also used for making varenets, fermented baked goods and in cooking (cookies, pies, creams).

Acuually,, Russia is vey stable and the move by the Central bank lowered commodity prices paid in foreign currencies. As the world economy keeps slowing down, it allows Russia to lower commodity prices to gain market share. Russians still have the same buying power, prices only will increase on foreign luxury goods which are not allowed to be shipped to Russia anyway due to sanctions that are harming only the collective west. 100 rubles buys the same food and essentials regardless of the foreign value of the currency, due to Russia being the most insulated country from the western crash hat is expected Europe and North American have serious problems approaching. It is a smart move by the excellent head of the Central Bank and to freeze it they increased the interest rate 3.5%

    Hi Svetlana!
No, the prices in the store there are pretty equivalent to prices here. Our prices have been going up a lot ever since the pandemic hit and they seem to still be going up from month to month.
I think, logically, you will mainly see prices for imported goods are the ones that would mainly be affected by the change in the Ruble.
What may cause prices to go up on goods grown or made in Russia would be inflation.
If the Ruble continues to fall, that could contribute to higher food prices then.
Sorry to hear you are now living alone.

Overall Russian prices are about 3-7 times less expensive then California, depending on the product especially the kielbasas price difference is huge. On average comparing income in California 3-7 times larger after you could federal income tax and California tax that about 25% so overall living in Russia is easer. After you include all other California expenses like gas prices, our public transportation system is horrible sidewalk are not even considered in many places or just don't exist you have to own a car, property tax or overpriced rent cost plus all the bs tax like pollution tax and fees and taxes that they pull out of mid-air like fees for sewage maintenance and electrical transmission and environmental fees. Everything adds up to about 10 more percent of your paycheck. And nds purchase tax 10% , so realistically after considering holder BS expenses from California Living in Russia now is about 30-40% easier. To be about equal someone in California needs to make at least $8500 to live like a Russian that makes $1000.
Just consider to go to work and get around I spend about $1000 a month just to work.

cheap low prices go with low wages. What appears expensive to your eyes seems inexpensive from my perspective. Comparing two similar oranges after economics is like comparing lemons and limes. None of the data points aligned with each other, your milk is white but our milk is white, but the life story of the cows are in stark contrast to one another and looking similar what's in the glass, not the same thing at all. Russian soldiers on the Frontline reportedly have nothing to eat, the world is desperate for the wheat Supply, critical shortages and none, have Nations starving, Reliant upon the Imports. Note the many restrictions the state of India has placed upon exports of wheat, rice, and now onions. The price you pay at the store and what it's worth seemingly is not based on anything in reality, for what is money really worth if your rent doubles overnight with people clamoring to rent it, seemingly you're paying twice as much as what you think it is worth, and no pay raise. It's time to move on. Economic prophets of money recommend investing in gold and silver, 10 X the actual available, traded daily between speculators, won't buy a slice of bread if the bakery is closed. The empty Vault where they store the faux gold doesn't exist either, plus monthly fees for storage and management, golden paper is merely management fees buying someone else a yacht. The zaporizhzhya power plant is packed with Russian trucks filled with explosives, no Liquidators like Chernobyl will come. So many special operatives dug trenches at Chernobyl, now abandoned by the Russians, the red Forest an ignored warning sign. Ukrainian cities turned into Rubble, how many rubles is that worth? After WWII the West re-educated the Germans and the Japanese with peace and prosperity that followed. Russians were not exposed to that, and with the corruption that follows Russians cannot express their true feelings any longer, their words prescribed by the state, and any protest can take you to the front where the meat grinder continues the horrific cast of War upon the entire world that is hungry and cut off from food, innocent any crime but hunger. Both sides still winning battles of attrition, no compromise or ending in the forecast. And the Chinese floods and Locust add to the misery heaped upon the world 8 billion Souls and all that God created, men have plans. The unforgivable sin it's the extinction of the planet, no matter how wonderful your underground Paradise to hunker down for the next 1000 years. Stock up your pantry while the expensive prices re-main cheap because when the store is empty you'll be eating gold and silver bars instead of Hershey bars, no longer available at any price.

The so-called "budget" supermarkets in Russia have almost identical products like here in your everyday European supermarket. The eggs and bread are surrealistically low in price (don't know how the chickens make a profit out of it), but here we prefer bread that is freshly baked and not some spongy thing wrapped in a plastic bag. No matter if products are made in Russia if you have one stock with a value of 100 rubles, and before selling it stock the ruble lost value, you will not recover your investment if the price is kept. If stores start losing money they will go to bankruptcy. If the prices rise and the government does not start raising salaries, people lose the amount of goods they can get. I like how health conscious you are with food.
The warning we are hearing, is that food shortages are on the way. For example, you can expect rice to be much higher in the near future.
In my country, we make a tremendous amount of food, but it is sold to the highest bidder. This makes them rich both ways, by selling to foreign countries and shorting our supply at home, which guarantees prices stay higher than they should be.
You should buy extra food and supplies if you have the money to do so. I reside in a food secure country and I still have a year's worth of food, vitamins, toilet paper and lots of camping gear. The economies around the world are slowing down and a very painful recession is forecasted. I think it will metastisize into a full depression.

Eggs are now cheaper here in Iowa but most other items are slightly lower in price than in the US. However, cheeses are about the same as are fruit and vegetables. The largest difference is that the average (median) salary in the US is eight to ten times more in the US than Russia.
