I’ve been watching Slovakia , Slovenia , Georgia , Albania etc and they all seem to be able to play some decent joined up football and they have a coherent system and plan. They play triangles , quick sharp passes , keep the ball well , press with intelligence. How the hell are England in this mess ? It’s unbelievable that these smaller nations can figure stuff out and Southgate and his team can’t.

I think any discussion about TAA, Foden, Kane, Trippier or any individual player means very little until we have some sense of what Southgate actually wants the team to look like.
Are we meant to be a low or mid block? Pressing or passive? Possession based or direct? Do we progress through the middle or down the wings?
Even if the football is boring or ineffective we should at least know what we're trying to do.

  • @XenothGaming

Play Trent right back (at least against Slovenia and teams where the opposition winger is not a major threat) with Bellingham and Rice holding with Foden in the AM position, Gordon left and Saka right, then ideally Kane if he is willing to mix his runs and do a bit of pressing, but Watkins is also an option. Trent would be on the ball in a comfortable area that he is used to with the ball down the channel to Saka, across to Gorden or inside to a Bellingham or Foden. Obviously the defensive pace of Kyle walker is great but on the ball he is usually a dead end. So when England should have the majority of the possession play Trent.

  • @EPL_Scout
    @EPL_Scout 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

In possession we were flat, slow and predictable. Pickford goes long too often even when there's options - either he's told to do that, or just doesn't have the ability. It also doesn't help when we have no left-footed defender. We don't need Rice & Trent standing on the centre-backs toes or with their back to play. Why not play a 4-3-3 like they do at City, Arsenal and Liverpool. Have Rice in the middle, then Bellingham & Foden offering angles either side. Both are comfortable receiving the ball, on the half turn, and can drive up the pitch.
Then we can have Gordon & Saka keeping the width, making runs in behind, with Rice, Walker and Trippier offering support from deep. And if we have the opposition pegged back, Walker or Trippier/Shaw could make an overlapping run.
Germany have Andrich & Kroos in midfield, but they don't play flat like England. Kroos drops to make a back 3, Andrich stays central and the full-backs get wide and join the attack. But we don't have the personnel to do that.
When Shaw is fit, we could play him LB, Trent RB, Rice drops in next to Stones and Guéhi with Wharton/Mainoo central. Or even play almost a back 5, with Walker, Stones, Guéhi and Rice the block that sits, Shaw & Trent as wing-backs and a front 4 of Bellingham, Foden, Saka and Kane. Just like Germany's Gundogan, Musiala, Wirtz and Havertz.

Southgate is failing to utilize a system that takes advantage of his compatriots. you have one of the best strikers in the world in Kane and he gets no service. England has looked competent at the beginning of games but as soon as they score they start defending without any pressure on the ball. It won't make a difference whatever changes Southgate makes. He has no tactical nous whatsoever, is far too pragmatic and his ability to affect a game is absolutely deplorable. He was the perfect guy for the job when he took over, as England were a shambles and needed that pragmatism to steady the ship. Since probably his second tournament however England have outgrown him.
The players are of a far far higher quality and play day in day out with far higher quality instruction and tactics. You could visibly see the frustration in the last 2 games.
There needs to be a clear philosophy of play instilled in the players way before the start of a tournament. It's abundantly clear that Gareth hasn't a clue who his best XI is. The fact he is currently experimenting with Trent in midfield during the group stages of a competition is concrete proof of this.
If Trent can't get in the team that's a shame, however he shouldn't be shoe-horned in at the cost of the team's balance. The same applies to Phil Foden. Who categorically cannot play on the left wing in this system.
Go back to basics by playing players in their correct positions. If he doesn't have the bottle to put Foden, Rice and Bellingham in midfield together then bench one of them. England's best and most balanced squad (that everyone and their granny are calling for) has the players playing in their established positions.
    Pickford in goal
Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier (Shaw if fit) at the back
Bellingham, Rice and Foden (Gallagher if Gareth hasn't the bottle) in midfield
Saka, Kane and Gordon up top.
Kane and the midfield need more willing runners, and as much as I like Eze he still wants the ball played to feet. Gordon will run all day. He could be the game changer and the player everyone is calling for yet Gareth hasn't given him a minute. Despite the fact he has looked great whenever he has played.
Bottom line, we will not win this tournament and will likely not even make the semi finals. However we could at least try and salvage a bit of pride then get rid of the handbrake that is Southgate before the next tournament.
England needs a coach that has a clear tactical direction that will suit our strength in forward areas. The players are good enough now to be trusted to do a job. The likes of Steve Cooper and Graham Potter would represent a decent upgrade and both have achieved moderate success at club level. Howe would be the dream candidate but will never happen unless something drastic happens at Newcastle. However finding another coach who follows a similar philosophy should be achievable.

Southgate had us sitting back! We needed to keep the presser up the field. Harry kept coming back into our midfield. We needed him to stretch Denmark we should have spun behind them to push Denmark back! The fans can blame the England players as much as they want. The real culprit is Southgate. We haven't worked on the press, by the look of things. After our substitutions, Our attacking players were pressing, but our midfield wasn't. We can keep blaming everything from the pitch, players, weather, or the fans, but the real issue is Southgate. Time and time again he gets the big, and now small, decisions wrong! Because of Southgate, The squad is unbalanced, he brought/selected the wrong players, he doesn't know who and when to bring players on, and he shows a lack of tactics, What formation to use, how to set his teams up, and how to read the game. Enough is enough, It's time to sack Southgate.#SouthgateOut #SackSouthgate

Foden is a luxury England cannot afford to start games with. England don’t play City’s system: wingers hugging the touchline, constantly stretching the defence, another 10 (Alvarez/Silva) in the opposite pocket to give their CBs a headache, and the threat of a Haaland run in behind. Opposition defenders get suffocated with the number of decisions they have to make. All this gives Foden the chance to cause chaos.
England don’t play this way - and that’s fine, they don’t have to. But it means making sacrifices. If it’s anyone’s team, it’s Bellingham’s. Let’s have him doing what he did all season for Madrid: crash the box and scoring goals, like against Serbia. Sit him in front of Rice and Wharton, who win headers and can move the ball quickly, and have pace on the wings either side (this obviously means Gordon).
No need to panic, but the idea of playing a quarterback in midfield (Trent) with no one to make runs in behind was obviously a bad idea from the start. Fix the left side by bringing on someone quick who can get to the byline, and have a box-crashing 10. Foden can come off the bench to cause chaos. But he can’t start.

I disagree because Bellingham is a moment's player who can clutch up and score goals from box crashing like u say sort of like a gundo playrr, however this can still happen with foden in the 10 because he's always constantly moving and creating chances for a late runner like Bellingham into the box and for people saying Bellingham is a 10 is wrong because he doesn't create chances for others except himself he's perfect as an 8 to achieve the balance and even off the ball foden and jude r the first to press high so whilst I do understand ur points I'm saying that Bellingham can provide 8/10 performance for team to thrive rather than him have a 10/10 and the team to not do as well as seen in the Serbia game

what needs to happen is this change formation to 4-4-2, Foden needs to be dropped or played on the right instead of Saka, Kane needs to be a 45 minute player, Alexander Arnold needs to be out of midfield and on the subs bench as a right back.
On the right Walker and Foden play together for Man City, know each other, can player well together.
on the left Trippier and Gordon, play together for Newcastle, know each other, can player well together.
Kane is the striker furthest forward and Bellingham just behind.
Starting 11 from left to right
    Pickford
Trippier -Guehi - Stones - Walker
Gordon - Rice - Mainoo (or Gallagher)- Foden
    Bellinghaham
    Kane

A manager that changes up a whole front line at 70 minutes (something I'm not against in principle if you're not doing well) with 3 runners, and 5 minutes earlier took off the only long pass specialist in the team (TAA) in favor of a man who is very good imo, but can't make a 5mts pass, much less a long one (Gallagher).

Don’t understand why in the prep games, he was playing 4-3-3 and started that way for about 20 minutes against Serbia and everyone looked good, only to switch to a 4-2-3-1. I don’t get it. It is harmful more than it is beneficial to so many of the players.
It’s completely made Trent the fall guy because he’s out of his depth there, he can’t get forward and create and his weaknesses are more exposed there. I’ve never seen him look more timid than he did last night, like he was terrified of making a mistake.
After watching how awful the Serbia game was, how did Southgate think I’ll play the exact same 11 in that same set up. Play the same 11 but change the system. Clearly the 4-2-3-1 doesn’t work with the personnel on the pitch.
The average position of the team for the 15 minutes after the goal was disgusting. I’ve never seen anything more shameful. All of them were camped out in and around the box except Saka. Who was just waiting for a pass.
Southgate is a massive problem. He says they haven’t replaced Phillips - well either play Wharton or better yet, be a better manager that can get the best out of your players by playing a system where you don’t need a Phillips. Or I don’t know….. play your warm up games in that system so the players can get used to it.
I expect Trent to be dropped for Gallagher and I expect them to not be much better unless he switches the system around because he’s got them playing trash football atm.
He needs to go after this tournament, even if he wins it (which LOL)
At least they’ll all be available for pre season with their clubs at this rate.

Unless there’s a big turnaround very quickly, I think we’re going to reach the QFs at best. I genuinely hope I’m wrong and Southgate turns it around but I think he’s taken us as far as he can.
When he was appointed, we were at rock bottom. He stabilised us defensively, brought in a great team spirit and got the country united towards team in 2018 as expectations were low. As we’ve then progressed with him, we’ve pulled away and outgrown him with the players we now have available. He’s been brilliant for the most part, he really has but we need a new manager after the tournament. He’s a very good defensive-solid manager but asking him to get his sides playing free-flowing attacking football isn’t in his skillset.
Each manager has a tactical approach and core fundamentals in how they want their teams to play, the players we have and the manager we have aren’t best suited now. It’s like saying to Steve Bruce, go and get your teams to play like Klopp or Pep, he wouldn’t be able to do it. Yes those first 20 mins against Serbia were brilliant, but we reverted to type and went defensive to protect what we’ve got. It’s a mindset we need to change and that comes from the manager.
Also, why we’re still experimenting 2 games into the tournament is bewildering. He should know the core of his team and the way he wants us to play months in advance of the first game. We wasted the friendlies in the build up. Play your strongest team at the start, get the cohesion and then swap as those games go on. Nope, we experimented and played people who he’s left behind or not using.
Like I say, I bloody hope he proves me wrong but it may well be too late to turn it around. We need a big reaction on Tuesday or it’ll end in tears…again.

We couldn’t play our best teams in the friendlies/build up because we’ve had so many key injuries and absences. Eg Bellingham joined the camp late because of the champions league final. So Southgate literally just had no opportunity to test the ideal lineup before this tournament

The issue is the way we're doing it is leaving us with no width in the left hand side. It's all left to a leggy right back covering that whole left channel, so we offer no threat going forward on that side, making us 50% easier to stop going forward and completely open to being attacked down our left as well, then we're stuck defending again. Cycle repeats whenever we do get forward.

@CMJames Yep. Rice is great reading defensivley amd getting a foot in - THAT IS IT. He lacks everything else to be a 6. Sure, looks great at a West Ham when the team sits back, but not in a ball dominating side. Even Arteta realised that and has Jorghino next to him. And when hes an 8, particularly at international level, there's plenty better than him, especially on other talented teams in the middle of the park. He isn't quick enough mentally, isnt quick enough on the ball, isn't cute enough on the ball, and isn't technically gifted. He's slowly being found out and massively overrated as we have seen before with many England players. Oh and Saka has another level he needs to get to - 0 assists for England leading in to the actual tournaments, 1 now, and that is effing dire for 'top class' winger (not counting qualifiers we near always breeze through)

Like your suggestions. Would add in 4-2-3-1 you could just push up Stones into the right side controller role in specific (triggered) phase of play and have Walker tuck into a RCB role; in other phases, Walker overlaps and Rice has to hold (with Stones still behind). Allows Bellingham to get forward. Get Trent out of the side, Foden into the CAM where he’s fantastic, and a proper left wing (like Gordon) to keep width. Watkins/Kane based on match situation (Kane early and Watkins late).

Trent is not a central midfielder. Doesnt know where to stand. Hes also not got the right set up to work as like a quarter back role. No runners for him. Pointless therefore playing him. The fact southgate cant see this shows hes not good enough. The phillips comment shows why he doesnt have a clue what hes doing.

Trent mid but then Kane deep and Foden narrow is what is killing me. You play TAA to get long balls in behind but then don’t give him anyone to pass to. It’s such a basic mistake that it really makes me question what Southgate is doing. Either drop TAA or bring on someone like Watkins with him.

Southgate has picked a team, and squad, with square pegs for round holes. Playing a counter attacking system (after we've taken the lead) with forward players that want the ball into feet and don't make the runs in behind. Why play Trent in midfield if you don't have any players making runs he can pick out. Couldn't understand why so many England fans wanted Trent in CM when he ISN'T a midfielder and doesn't have the attributes to play there. We need a far more stable structure to get the best out of our key players; Jude, Kane, Foden etc.
Not bringing on Palmer, Mainoo and Gordon is very worrying given that they're the players that are most likely to give us the structure this team needs. A lot to improve between now and the knock out stages.

More fantasy football playing an imaginary game in the head of an apparently more sober and thoughtful pundit. This does not address teams that love the counter-press like Austria and the physically domination of England. The glaring weakness at LB and the targeting by teams of Trippier, while unable to support the LW. The lack of height or physical power both offensively and defensively. The lack of endurance. The willingness for a number of teams to play grinding, destructive football. The mental frailties caused by playing two crushingly physical games , the ability of deep lying playmakers like Kroos to pop a ball down the channels and do what Germany did to Scotland in the first 10 minutes before applying the killing blow.
It's as though English football hasn't learnt any lessons since 1970-that its great teams with a tried and tested pattern of play win the big games, not 'Plan B' (or is it C now) so beloved by the British media class and fandom.
Well done James, you've out Southgate Southgate and the likes of Andrich, Kante, Rhordi, are never going to thrive in any of the set ups presented by this ill thought out panic presentation. When an entire nation can't pick a starting 11 without descending into farce, when apparently Rashford and Grelish lack of work rate isn't an issue and should be playing, when chucking kids with little or no experience is the key and a 34 year old German manager plays with three formations dependant on game state, then your way out of your depth.
