- I put "original upload" on the title because I own this video. Some of my videos are being copied because they are that good. Anyway, this is the Spice Finch song (soft singer). Most Spice Finches are barely audible, so you may need to put up the volume for this one. This is the only bird I have that seems to go into a trance-like state when it sings. We refer to him as the "old fart" because he looks older than my other finches. Spice finches get along with other types of finches. We keep this one and his two partners (AKA the spice girls) in the same flight cage with Society Finches, and we've had no problems whatsoever. It saved us from having to keep a separate cage, which is good!
Male & female Spice finches all look the same, so the only way to tell the sex for sure is when it starts to sing, because only males can sing like this, while females just chirp. Beak shape and "bib" length is unreliable for determining the sex in your spice finch. For those curious to know, we purchased our spice finches at Magnolia Bird Farm in Riverside, California for $11.25 each (before tax).
I had my spice finch for 7 years (Henrie Byrd) and we have bonded finally. I play a game with him telling him that I'm going to touch his tail feathers. He likes to play.

We don't have that issue here with the other males disturbing. All my finches had chicks except for the spice finches and my shafftail (long tailed) finches. Those are also difficult to breed.

I'll try... they're not always cooperative. These are the ones that love to fly around the entire cage - they are very active.

both sing but females are smaller and have shorter beaks while male have bigger and longer beaks.female are shy and the will always hide

how to breed them
Can't help you there. I have three spice finches (1 male and 2 females) for more than a year now, but no chicks. They have a nest and all they need, yet these are difficult to breed.
+SoCalMom are you sure you have a male?females can also sing but less frequently.beak shape is the only way
My female spice finches do not sing at all. The male in this video is the only one that attempts to sing, and after he is done singing he jumps on one of the females (trying to mate). Beak shape is not always accurate though.
+SoCalMom yes ,females are very silent when kept in a group but separate one of your females in a small cage and observe her but dont let her see you otherwise she wont sing.
We had them in a separate cage before, but it did not seem to make any difference... my females have always been quiet, except for a chirp now and then. Now they stay with the societies in a bigger flight cage, yet they have their own nest. All three spice finches sleep in the same nest by themselves.
