Amazing skill and craftsmanship. What's really most amazing to me is how this entire repair process was developed in the first place. My hat's off to this man.
It was a fairly common repair in the UK in the old days. I can recall my father having a newish Ferguson T20 rear tyre repaired in a similar way by a local tyre retailer back in the late 1950s. Nowadays the costs [H&S related stuff, and wages] do not justify it due to the relatively cheap cost of a new tyre for most applications. I believe a similar process is still carried out on customers' damaged tyre carcasses by the tyre manufacturers, even in the rich Western nations, for higher end ultra-large tyres
I have no words...just tears and appreciation of what this gentleman and others like him are capable of ! That lead and the fumes, the pouring of hot metal so close to his unprotected eyes...yes I did have tears all the way. Let the parts of the world that wastes...think about this. Bottom line he works for himself. Try any trucking business, and you will find out micromanaging bosses, idiotic coworkers and hard lifting non stop. That guy is a boss to himself
My grand dad did it for decades on his farm. Not in the same way this guy did but they patched them regularly with patches made from discarded tires and heat. Back in the depression they had to. You wouldn't believe some of the tractor repairs and rigging they did to keep them working. You had to make due with whatever you had. It took ingenuity
This whas my first real job when i got out of school in the early 80´s probably one of the last that worked with this type of repair in sweden,,but we had electric heated tools and hydraulic press. but the basic is the same
I wish we had more trades people like that in the UK. No shortcuts, attention to detail, and an end result to be proud of. @@zombiezombie1977 This kind of reparations is also being done here in the western world, especially on agricultural and construction machine tires - those big tires ain't cheap you know, and this tire wasn't dry rotted, it was damaged, probably by driving over sharp rocks and such.
@@jrand2631 yes. But they did nothing to restore the bias ply. Whatever they used was not bonded to the rest of the carcass, but only small parts of it. That will always be a point of failure in the future.
@@SamP0rterBridges This form of repair is fine and safe when done carefully and thoroughly, which this man has done in the examples here in this video. It is done the world over this way, because it works and it is economical. The only aspect that is questionable about this is the potential contamination from being done in such a filthy environment. After he cleans and stitches the hole up, he puts much larger layers of rubber above and below and hole, and seals it all together with heat. There is much more rubber bonding to the tire body than there was open hole to begin with. It certainly did not only bond to small parts of the tire, the entire patch became a strong part of the tire.
I'd love to spend a week hanging around and working with this guy at his shop. Probably learn so much of a dying art. Plus I bet he's got some interesting stories and life lessons to share. I'd rather take the time to fix/repair something properly than toss it and buy a new one. That is of course as long as there is still life left in the item, such as the case here.
@@kylen1922 ppl in more fortunate countries simply choose to not kill themselves by breathing toxic crap everyday. Dude probly has lung cancer and doesn't even know. By the time he realizes it itll be way to late to do anything about it
It's not a dying art, we do it all over the world. It's just that we have good tools and factories to do it in, he's in a street with shit tools. It just takes way longer the way he's doing it.
At first, after viewing this video, I was upset that we don't get to see the results of the old craftsman's work by having the tire inflated and driven on - but then I realized that there is poetic justice in our not getting to see the results. The key here is - how hard, diligently and skillfully this old master executed his work - without any help whatsoever. That is the key!
Most of these Tractor tires use inner tubes, so Im sure it inflated and held properly. Also most are also filled with water antifreeze mixture and air. so they are pretty solid when inflated.
This man really deserve a award. How easily he did by simple and old tools. These people live in a very small village but his skill better than city lol.
Define taken care. This is sad, a huge waste of time and resources, because they're too poor to replace it. A patch on an old tyre like this is taking him forever to do and the tyre will not last, it will break in another spot right away, because it's so old the rubber has degraded. There is a reason why the most profitable factories don't jerry rig things like this, you lose money and time every step of the way, he is wasting time fixing it, it won't last as long, it will break when they need it the most.
Amazing, here I am at work watching this guy work his guts out. Really makes you appreciate what you have and think your problems aren't really that bad.
Bless his heart. At that age, working that hard to repair something that's worth so little to us. I saw a dude from what looked like the same area repairing a big hole in an engine block! Here, if an engine block has the smallest crack, it's scrap. That tractor tire would definitely be trash in this country. It's not that everyone is lazy here, it's just that even when they were new, those things wouldn't be worth the time it would take to repair them. In the time that was put into fixing that tire, someone could've made enough money to buy multiple new ones. Those tractor tires aren't cheap, but he put some time into fixing it. What I'm saying is, some of us are far luckier than we ever stop to consider. I think I'm getting to that age, I'm starting to realize that after you have the things you always wanted, you just want more things. Most of the people I know have everything and act like they're miserable. If people like this cat are free to live as they choose, have what they need and have each other, they're probably just as happy or happier than most of us. I bet those kids are awesome! lol Our little spoiled kids in this country are the worst part about having so much! My two are good kids, but all our kids are spoiled. They're raised in a spoiled society by spoiled parents whose parents probably had it pretty good coming up themselves. So that's like three generations of spoiled! lol! Now I'm just thinking way too far into it and typing out my thoughts. lmao! Don't smoke weed and comment on TH-cam videos, kids! 😂😏🤫
Those engine block repair videos are amazing! I thought the same thing when I first saw it, "that's beyond repair". But "beyond repair" means nothing to these people! They fix things and reuse them over and over, true recycling. The man repairing this tyre has a huge amount of experience at this. You can tell that manipulating the tyre and doing the stitching isn't as easy for him as it once was, but that experience and knowledge really shines through. Also you are right - these people are not all depressed or feel sorry for themselves despite not having the technology and wealth that we have - they are still happy and proud of what they have, and their families. They just get on with it and don't worry about the things we worry about - in fact, our worries would probably make them laugh!
I understand where you are coming from, but have you priced a new tractor tire of that size lately? we may have to relearn some of these skills! if inflation keeps going like it is.
I've never priced one, but I know they aren't cheap. He put several hours into fixing it though. If stuff like tractor tires has gone up as much as building supplies, I hate it for anyone who needs them. I'm an electrician and I can not believe the rate that the prices keep rising on anything to do with construction! Btw, I saw a dude over there fix a big hole in an engine block! Here, if they have the tiniest crack, they're scrapped.
This is about a $500.00 section repair here in the states. I would take his over our ,considering here they probably would not guarantee it. THIS IS A CRAFTSMAN
These people amaze me. Taking an old tire that most people would discarded and repairing it is awesome. And the old man will probably work this hard until he passes away. Just think about how strong this old man is and the grip power in his hands.
Here in the U.S. the company would have bought a new tire. The old broken ones are probably shipped to places like this LOL. This guy not only fixes tires, he's also a metallurgist and a potter. 😆 I hope he was compensated for this job proper. Must've taken hours.
Great skill and control of very basic sharp tools, I would be in A&E with severed fingers if I tried this, years of experience for this old man, amazing.

What a craftsman this man is. Using used, in good shape rubber to reform and patch a hole, and a solid job at that. A used tire in the States may cost, if you can find it, 100 dollars. This man has well over that in labor alone, but has done a superb job at giving an old tire new life. Very much respect for a craft that is not practiced here. Well done.
A used tractor tire a $100? Where? A used car tire can get as cheap as $30-$40 in Miami-Dade County Florida. But a $100 for a big tractor tire like that one not even broken as it looks in the beginning I think is extremely cheap, if you find them buy some! Now when you buy an old abandoned broken or non starting or with missing pieces machine, then tires and some parts if you divide the whole equipment as in parts corresponding with the total you may get the tires even cheaper but I still think a $100 for that big one tires is too low as a price.
How much do you think that worker was paid to repair the tire? My thinking is 20 bucks USD. Plus he consumed likely 10 bucks in gas and materials. The man also used his own tools. Not really consumed, but there is cost. Plus the stall rental. Also exposed himself to lead. Not a huge deal, he make sure to filter the air thru the filter in his cigs!

Amazing skill and craftsmanship. What's really most amazing to me is how this entire repair process was developed in the first place. My hat's off to this man.
it was developed in the search of substitute matierials and ways to joint them into a tire hole
My question is the structural integrity after the repair.
one rubber wheel around 1000$ repairing it 100$ makes sense to repair them.
@@divineantiwokewarrior it's how it's been done around the world. It just isn't considered code in most first world nations these days.

You can rest assured that the tire inflated just fine and is hard at work. This craftsman knew what he was doing .
Be patient watch until the end and you will contemplate the result
Most of these Tractor tires use inner tubes, so Im sure it inflated and held properly. Also most are also filled with water antifreeze mixture and air. so they are pretty solid when inflated.

Yeah some people have the audacity to call their office job "work".
Love and share your feelings Smokey !

Now when you buy an old abandoned broken or non starting or with missing pieces machine, then tires and some parts if you divide the whole equipment as in parts corresponding with the total you may get the tires even cheaper but I still think a $100 for that big one tires is too low as a price.
