    Which side do you tend to sit or lean towards?!

    I'm just wondering when I'm going to get it right, its like I know exactly what to do,that is until I get on board, then I either ride quite well, (as well as I can), or everything I've learned goes straight out the window, of course he horse usually know this and can play up accordingly......💜🐴💜😄 Oh, the struggles.

      Haha! You're not alone. Just keep riding. It's just time in the saddle!

    Harvey is such a good boy. He stood so still when you were explaining the shirt/jacket. You have done such an incredible job training him. Also, that jacket is REALLY neat!

    Your saddle fit and balance can also impact how you sit and your straightness in the saddle. Most horses have a shoulder that is smaller or slightly more forward and saddles will tend to drop into that hollow, which changes how you will sit in the saddle.

      Yes! Thanks for pointing this out!

      Yes, I am struggling with this issue. My mare's right shoulder is smaller and slightly more forward than her left shoulder. I really struggle with collapsing/leaning towards the right on her. I often have to correct my saddle back to center even though it has been professionally fitted and checked several times. Very frustrating.

    Thanks, Amelia. As always, thoughtful and attainable help. If you don’t mind saying, what size are you wearing? Are they true to size? Small being a size 4 or 6? Do you prefer mesh or the the other fabric?

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The one I'm wearing is a small but its almost too small. I would go with a medium mesh if I got another one 😁

    What a neat idea. I lean right with my shoulders and left with my hips. I have two theories about why. I noticed that I wear the outside of my right shoe and the inside of my left shoe so I might have a right leg shorter than my left. I also spent years in the fields on a tractor. Small square balers and corn pickers are off set to the right side of the tractor and so no matter what job I was doing I sat on my right hip and watched the machinery off my right side. I spent 90% of that time looking back and could keep the tractor straight based on where the machine was. The only exception was planting corn where I had a marker to follow. I would sit in the pickup that way too. Now I try to sit up straighter. Often when I am in the saddle I feel like the saddle is shifted to the left, but it's straight. Suck to be crooked but at least I'm not in politics and have a clear conscious. Lol.

      Haha! We're all crooked but its so important to be aware of it and to know what patterns started this behavior!

    This is the perfect tool for me. I just wanted to let you know what a great marketer you are. I tried to order one of the mesh with green stripes at 11:30 am (here in California) and they already had sold out! I spoke with customer service at Visualise Canada and she told me that they strangely have had several calls from California today. I told her it was not so strange because Amelia Newcomb had just sent out her video on straightness using one of their jackets. Also, coincidently, the favorite color has been green, lol. Thank you for all your tips and education.

    What you say in the text about not being able to access straightness without an instructor or mirrors/video is so relevant. If my horse isn't straight, that is..... in alignment on a curve or straight line: he loses rhythm, relaxation ( gets tense), loses balance, forward thrust (impulsion) and gets unsteady in the bridle (loss of connection). He wants to carry his haunches right and his shoulders left so putting him into the outside rein is complicated.
    Finding that "sweet spot" where he seems to "click" into place and where I can reward him by using minimal aids, is really illusive. My instructor can do it without even thinking about it. This "place" or position has a secure feeling that's very different from the many possible crooked positions where you have to keep adjusting and/or over-correcting and it's the only position in which you can make good transitions and changes of direction, not to mention upper or mid level movements.
    So that's how you can tell if you and your horse are straight and for me, it's far from the place I settled for that I "thought" was straight.
    Love the shirt. Great idea. I saved the web sight. We don't have mirrors at our new arena but even a photo is proof. I swore that I was sitting straight, but in the photo I was overwhelmingly sitting to the right. Now I don't know where I am. If it feel right, it's probably wrong and if it feels wrong, it's awkward. I know, practice is key. LOL Thanks for your great videos.

    Will have to invest in this. I've got scoliosis and it''d be a great visual. Would wear it to every clinic as coaches seem to forget that my struggle is my spine like stop! it's not the horse!! She's reacting to me! I struggle to sit straight and keep my legs still-er, and toes in but my spine! They all start looking at the horse, trying to correct her.

      Love Horsemanship- Loyalty Over Violent Engagement I have scoliosis/spinal fusion as well, same issue. Most trainers do not understand. If you have an "S" curve, your body compensates on both sides and you may look relatively straight, but we are not . Also with this type of scoliosis there is also a rib rotation and pelvic rotation the opposite way . Yikes! I'm amazed my horse lets me get on his back:) It has taken fifteen years to learn how to get my horse to feel me about even and therefore even in the reins. One thing that has helped me(among dozens) is to glance down to check that my hands are equidistant from the withers, many times they're shifted to one side and the balance is all a mess. Well keep on riding!

    Thank you! This is really helpful. It's hard to keep my legs long but I've been working on it and I see results! Fortunately my horse is tolerant and a real gem at 6 years old.

    Interesting that your horse pushes you off to the left, I have noticed in many horses this is often the side that this occurs, I think this might be because we tend to do a lot from the left side ( leading , getting on ,etc) so it's more likely this is the side that the horse may push against us if startled or excited , as what happens on the ground is replicated when ridden , the horse will push against you quite often more to the left?? Or have I put 2+2 and got 5?

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Great observation and I agree that most tend to push you off to the left. Some of it I think is that most horses bend easier to the left so they like to carry the rider over there. It could also be that since we mount from the left like you said we pull the saddle over to that side at the beginning of the ride!

    • @MrMinibus1
      @MrMinibus1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmeliaNewcombDressage yes I see Amelia, the mounting from left would contribute to the saddle being pulled over ( I tend to always if possible not get on from the ground, although I am riding two horses well over 17hh! And tend not to girth up very tight.) I guess this could also contribute to a favoured side for the horse to brace? As you say just observations , but it could give riders an explanation if they find they are off to one side and begin to think they the cause is asymmetry in their bodies and start looking for a fix for their wonky body, when they need to look at making sure the horse is straight underneath them ( which is what your excellent video is about) as you teach a lot this might clear up confusion for riders as to the cause of non straightness. Apologies for lengthy message ...I know how busy you are .
