Smile is nothing without the emotional backstory. That's what made the first one so terror-ific. The demon feeds off trauma, so the first act requires that deep and seemingly pointless development of emotion groundwork, more than the average horror film. As a horror aficionado, and someone who taught a class on the genre, it's very rare for me to be effected by a film these days. Smile got to me though. It really spoke to my own experiences and vulnerabilities as a trauma survivor and how we/the world treats us. So glad you enjoyed this film. Can't wait to watch it too.
Don't worry, it's not up there with Natalie Portman. It's better. Naomi Scott just goes so many more places than Natalie Portman does with this role. As much I've loved her since The Professional, but I still think she's a bit one note as an actress.
Scotts performance can compete against Portmans character from Black Swan. Big difference is the writing, tone, and theme. Loved the movie, but was a smidge too long.
Yep but then again imagine a multiverse where Britney is on it. 🔥 ❤ dgmw i love Naomi Period. she delivered so hard i'm actually obssessed with her at this point.
The soundtrack EP is actually one of my favorite parts of this movie. The performance in the movie was AMAZING. She really looks like a pop star. The song she sings in the piano was great too specially with what comes after it
This movie was amazing. Thanks for recommending it Grace! All this talk about Demi Moore getting an Oscar for The Substance…well Naomi Scott in Smile 2 is right there!!
Grace, first off, I LOVE the thumbnail, second, I’m glad you loved this movie, as I went to an early screening on Wednesday and surprisingly loved it too! And I’m not a big horror fan. Definitely the best horror movie of the year and probably one of my best movies of the year!
Tbh I don’t think Terrifier 3 is scary. It’s just a gore vehicle. Little kids dying, people getting scalped by box cutters, women, for lack of a better term, pleasuring themselves with shards of glass. The script doesn’t justify it either. Do NOT watch it Grace. Save yourself 😭
I don’t like jump scares, because I feel like it’s a cheap quick way to elicit the fear response, without really putting in effort. And it only lasts a moment. Generally once the jump scare is over, your nervous system cools back down. But, if the writing, acting, and visuals are all firing on all cylinders, you’ll get something that not only frightens you in the moment but sticks with you. It’s what makes you look in the backseat before pulling out of the parking lot, or not turn off the lights until you’re safely in bed. It’s where nightmares come from. Jump scares are just a gimmick. I’m not saying you should never use them. Just use them sparingly, as an appetizer to put the audience off kilter before you serve them the main course.
As someone who LOVES horror films, I'd even go as far as to say it's my favourite genre, the reason why jump scares are often met with disdain, by horror aficionados, is due to the fact that they can feel cheap and unearned. The essence of a truly great jump scare are those that build off dread, and take their time to reach a crescendo. In truth, some of the best ever horror films, especially those over the last decade or so (with Hereditary arguably being the gold standard), work best without any jump scares whatsoever. What's much better than a jump scare?? A sense of perpetual dread that lingers from scene to scene, where the director and actors, as well as the sound/music used, are able to keep you on the edge of your seat and lock you in place with debilitating anxiety and fear. When you start falling prey to your own imagination during a film, and are unable to shake off that gut wrenching sense of uncomfortable uncertainty minute by minute, that pays off far better than any jump scare as it's not a knee jerk reaction. I absolutely adored the first Smile film, so it's great to hear so many positive things about Smile 2. Also, as a huge fan of Naomi Scott, and a fellow west Londoner (born and raised), I couldn't be more happy for her success with this 😀
The first smile really sent me into a deep depression after watching it. The whole first movie I felt the metaphor for the smile monster was linked to trauma. Seeing the monster kill the main character in the first movie felt like the movie was saying that son trauma was too powerful to overcome. That really stuck with me and really did depress me. I hope smile 2 doesn’t follow that same formula
I absolutely recommended the first one after I saw it. The plot wasn’t particularly unique, a “big bad” infecting each person it comes across, but It was a pleasant surprise on how well they pulled it off. Fully intend to watch the sequel,… once it gets to streaming.
Loved the movie!!! Love Naomi Scott since her movie Lemonade Mouth!! Of course was amazing in Aladdin! Both showcasing her singing abilities. My personal favorite of her's will always be the 2017 Power Rangers movie!! And her role in the 2019 Charlie's Angels was good too!! She absolutely killed it in Smile 2!!! She NEEDS more work!! ❤️
Grace I watch all of your reviews, it’s the first thing I do every time I watch a film now I have to say this, I am a massive Smile fan the first one was a masterpiece so with that being said ok you saw Smile 2 and you have a first time take on the entity that’s in the film however there is no no no no way I feel you can TRULY appreciate this franchise unless you’ve seen the first one and I say that with the utmost conviction. Smile 2 was so much more visual with basically everything. The first Smile was immensely more mental and was able to get inside your head way more. This film was as well but not like the first. In addition I do agree the pacing for the first 3rd of the film dragged a bit. The original is a bat out of hell from beginning to end. So to wrap this up I must say this again and I cannot stress it enough watch the first one I feel as though your entire perspective will be altered. Take my word for it.
The Trap comparison😂😂😂 Just got out from a screening, and wow it’s much much better than the first movie. Interestingly enough, the first movie is definitely in the vein (likely inspired) by IT Follows, but this one feels much more like Jacob’s Ladder. Also, and just a heads up to anyone planning on seeing it with some sensitivity issues with noises, it’s a very loud movie even for a horror film.
Just saw came out of it of the theater..... Yeah its the main chick is badass. Very intrested to see in what other lead roles she can perform in. She definitely carried this movie 🎬 4/5 🎉
GRACE! I agree 100 percent of what you said here, I watched the first film and loved it, this film blew me away. you right about pop stars could of been in this film, now they have to watch out if Naomi Scott turns the tables on them. Compare this to terrier! terrier I can see why it took a long time to get a following, both story and killer clown in one dimensional with a lot of gore and nudes. Smile2 is multi-dimensional that needed a four-dimensional actress with a lot of talent in many fields and that is Naomi Scott. I also agree that this film should help push Scotts career with her doing singing, dancing and acting in one film. and with the sets and amazing supporting cast with the great director and amazing writing on this film. Naomi showed super star level performance, and I wish she should be up for an Oscor!
I knew from that first teaser that Naomi was doing insane stuff here. Some absolutely killer 'crazed protagonist, end-of-her-rope' horror girl faces and shouting line deliveries
The first one was so scary. I don’t know how they could top it. I watch horror all the time and smile really scared me. The first movie was also very slow, but good. Builds the backstory to feel for the characters.
Not Grace scaring us with this thumbnail... 😱😳

Easily a top 10 thumbnail
That thumbnail was everything, Grace! 😱😳
Grace, you’re killing it with these thumbnails 🫶🏻
Sounds like Noami Scott’s performance in this movie is up there with Natalie Portman in Black Swan, I’m really happy for her
Steady, lad.
@@georgeykitheka fair enough😂 I’m not at all undermining that phenomenal performance

13:42 I completely disagree. A real pop star would've completely taken me out of the movie. Naomi Scott was 100% the best possible choice

Grace the thumbnails and outfits, you’re KILLING it😂😉
you know when a movie is scary when grace says “i covered my eyes” 😂
The song “Blood on White Satin” is on repeat the most from this film! It's so good!
The soundtrack EP is actually one of my favorite parts of this movie. The performance in the movie was AMAZING. She really looks like a pop star. The song she sings in the piano was great too specially with what comes after it
Team Thumbnail! Grace, I love the new "umph" you're giving to your videos. The spooky voices, dressing up and the creepy thumbnails. 👍

The thumbnail scared me ngl 😭😭
Say whatever you want about the music but “Blood on White Satin” is a certified bopppp
The sound design of the first one was great. Even if you looked away, the audio dragged you back in

Grace you need to be in the third Smile! That thumbnail smile is SPOT ON!
this is definitely a top 10 most creative BTT thumbnail
Blood on White Satin is my SOTY. Grieved You is a Tate McRae cut. The music is dark and unique for pop music and was genius marking for the film!
