In this 30min drawing demo I talk about how to create the blended colours of the kereru birds feathers and how to get the feather texture looking good.
I use both polychromos and prismacolor, they are both really great quality. I loved watching this drawing i was having a lot of trouble trying to draw feathers and this helped me so much.
As far as Prismacolor not being light-fast. I don't hang my original art in any sunlight or even shaded walls. I scan them and print out digital copies. So I don't worry about light-fast art. Furthermore I also use Polychromos. Which is better than karan d ache IMO... 😊😊😊
RE: Polychromos V Caran D'Ashe - it depends what you're using them for, Polychromos are oil based so have a harder nib and are therefore better for fine details . Caran D'Ashe are wax based so are creamier and softer so will cover more ground more evenly and be good at blending. I've gone for both so I can have the best of both worlds. Derwent Drawing Pencils are also fab though the colour range is limited at 24

Not sure why the negative response to Prismacolor pencils. They burnish and layer easily. Great pencils soft and vibrant as they are wax based. I also use the Polychromos 36 set.. love them too. Harder than Prismacolor but sharpen a little easier. Finally I have the Faber Castell Albrecht Durer water color pencils the 60 set. I have one Karan D ache Luminance pencil in white for highlights. It was 8$ for one pencil 😮. I love this drawing. I learned a lot. Feathers aren't easy to pull off imo. Thanks for the tutorial! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hi there. Prismacolor is not very available where I live, but I have the full set of Polychromos, because I can buy them open stock, and I have a few Caran d’Ache pencils. I have watched a lot of reviews before I invested in quality colored pencils, both from professional artists and from avid colorists, and I have read a lot of comments from color enthusiasts. What I have gathered from my “research” is that all colored pencils contain oil and wax, but in different ratio, and thus behave differently based on that ratio. Polychromos pencils have a high oil content, making the core fairly firm. This give them the ability to keep the point longer. I love them for this reason. I truly love to color with an extra long point (and have a sharpener specifically for that). That also means that gradients typically is built in many thin layers, rather than a few thicker ones that you can do with more waxy pencils. The Polychromos are in general also more lightfast than Prismacolor, if that is of importance. Prismacolor contains more wax than Polychromos, and blends differently. Some people prefer these due to that. If you struggle with arthritis or fatigue in your hands, they will be much kinder on your hands, from what I have read. But the point wear down faster than the Polychromos. And I have read frequently that the core of the pencils has become more prone to breakage after the factory moved to México. I think the feel of the Caran d’Ache pencils are a mix of the two, and is considered the ultimate artist pencil. I don’t color enough to defend having a full set of them. I do love my Polychromos because I have found that I love coloring with a pointy pencil 😊 In Caran d’Ache I have the white pencil, which I love, and some of the skin tones, which I also find I also find useful.
Prismacolor isn’t consistent in quality, leaves a wax bloom, the leads break easily, and they aren’t lightfast so the artwork will fade within a couple years. That’s why some people don’t like Prismacolors. Caran D’Ache Luminance is the closest in consistency to Prismacolor and yes they are expensive but they are 100% lightfast and have none of the cons of the prismacolors.

I might have missed it but when you were doing the eye and you took some plastic thing and you were doing highlights, what was it you were using? When you made the little white highlighted sections around the eye? Then you put it down to the left side of you, but I’m not quite sure what it is. Thank you.

To answer your question, I have a set of Polychromas pencils. I don't like Prismacolor. I also have a few Carindash Luminance pencils. I like your photo and drawing.
Polychromos and Caran D’Ache Luminance. Prismacolor pencils are poorly manufactured, and very waxy. When drawing layers, it rapidly creates a waxy bloom. Very frustrating.
