- A Documentary Film about floods at Sikkim Darjeeling & Kalimpong
DOCUMENTRY STORY:
Like any other night, I was sound asleep when a sudden voice jolted me awake. On closer listening, I recognized it as my brother's voice. He urgently revealed that the flood had engulfed our entire land including the house we lived in. Fortunately, we had evacuated in time, prompted by a police warning about the impending flood.
In my half-asleep state, my brother knocked on my door, soaked from the rain. With him were his wife and sister-in-law, who had arrived on a scooter. I handed him a handkerchief to dry his face and provided half-pants and a vest since he had left everything behind in the rush to save their lives.
I returned to bed, falling back asleep. The incident occurred around 3:30 am. In the morning, my father and the same brother went to Rangpo, Kalimpong, West Bengal, where the flood had struck. At 6:30 am, I woke up, prayed, and joined my other brother to visit Rangpo.
The scene was chaotic, with people helping each other. Some were distributing tea, while the police managed the situation. The flood had receded, but the water level remained high and dangerous. I went to the spot where my brother had come from and saw that the house was filled with sand and mud. Massive vehicles lay fallen and damaged, drawn into the water. The reason behind this catastrophe was that my brother and others lived near a river, similar to a breach in 1968 when a massive flood had occurred.
Returning to the present, the Rangpo and Teesta rivers collided, causing havoc. People lost their homes, families, and belongings. I captured the devastation in a video and visited the bridge connecting Sikkim and West Bengal, witnessing the same dire situation on the Sikkim side.
The next day, I revisited the affected area, finding people residing in shelter camps set up in schools and community halls. Many organizations extended help with food and clothing. My friends were actively cooking meals for the survivors, and I engaged in conversations with those affected by the calamity."
