Regarding Yvette Nicole Brown, IIRC, she really did leave to care for her father and took another acting gig with a less hectic shooting schedule.

It is apparently canon - from subtle indications in the show, the character’s bio and Harmon himself confirming, that Britta had been inappropriately touched by a man dressed as a dinosaur at a birthday party when she was a child - and her parents refused to believe her. Which led to her resentment of her parents.
So yes - she absolutely should have been believed by her friends and it is both sad and gross that she is sort of gaslit into having her resentment dismissed.
Granted, to her friends, Britta is a financial leech and her parents seem like very kind people who help offset her debts to them so I can understand why her friends take her parents’ side. But they still should not have.
That makes it deeply fucked up that her Halloween costume for the zombie episode was a dinosaur.

There was a mini Clue movie reunion with Britta’s parents played by Leslie Ann Warren and the late Martin Mull (Miss Scarlet and Colonel Mustard.) Dan Harmon liked to sprinkle the cast’s real life details to their characters (Abed being half Polish, Annie being Christian on her dad’s side.) Unfortunately, Yvette Nicole Brown’s father was seriously ill and she scaled back her acting gigs.
Elroy is played by Keith David. He was the narrator in the Pillows and Blankets episode.
One you know who he is you will hear his voice in everything. I may get flak for this but IMHO Keith David > Morgan Freeman.
He voices Captain Anderson in Mass Effect and the Flame King in Adventure Time off the top of my head but he's literally everywhere.
not to mention he's Reverse Giraffe in Dan Harmon's other masterpiece
@@notmyproblem88 oh I just learned he played Gus's dad on Psych but that was as a kid before I recognized actors. It's a great show and it still holds up.
@@matthewzeller5026 I watched some Psych many years after it aired, on streaming, my initial attraction to it was the fact that they made a full Twin Peaks tribute episode

I agree it's funny where "Chloroform Annie" draws lines about morality. 🤔
I probably said this before but Dan Harmon has said that halfway through the series he realized that Britta was the most like himself and he uses the character to explore his own Gen X, self-righteous, incompetent, traumatized issues. The situation with the parents is very similar to his where his parents were terriblebut then became relatively OK people once they got older and now he has had to come to terms with never really processing the trauma but also building a relationship with them
Also the Chang cat bite story actually happens to one of their staff or writers on the show and over the course of a day swelled up to larger then they made hands swell up. And I guess the person really wasn’t dealing with it until it got really bad
There’s also a really strong running implication through the series that Britta had actual childhood trauma and that her parents swept it under the rug or were in denial
It’s one of the reasons why she refuses to go into her backstory quite often through the series. Almost all of the crumbs of her backstory are pretty terrible
Judging by stuff said on Dan Harmon's podcast, I'm guessing that what happened with the Britta's parents subplot was that it was supposed to mirror Harmon's own complicated relationship with parents who beat him as a child, but a lot of the edge was taken out in trying to make the subject matter play better in a comedy show.
I 100% agree with your sentiment that it feels very different but still really good. I've never seen a show get so constantly beaten down and still power through and successfully adapt to huge changes that would crush another show. They take it in stride and ask "How can we turn this shit hand into a Royal Flush?"

It definitely feels different, but like you said it still works. Harmon was absolutely on a surrealist kick this season, and it's great. And yeah, I'd watch the shit out of Portuguese Gremlins.
Completely agree with your take on Britta's feelings. I really feel bad for her in that episode. And unfortunately, I can relate to having to be there when someone sucks while everyone else gets to experience their good (or "good") side. It really sucks.

I split the difference in my opinion of the friends relationship with Britta's parents. The friends shouldn't be THAT deep in a secret relationship, and in the meantime they should be actively trying to get to the bottom of Britta's reasons for the estrangement. They do dismiss what she says about her parents, but I would guess that its because she isn't being clear and it sounds like hyperbole and metaphor.

I think Annie's reaction can be logically explained as a combination of "straw that broke the camel's back" and the fact that she's not the teenager she was when the show started, so it's likely her worldview has changed.

With Britta, people don't just accidentally go no contact with their parents. And just some rl advice, if your friend doesn't wanna talk about it, that's kinda a sign it must be really bad if they can't communicate what it was

It's eerie that Martin Mull pops up in this episode just days after he died.
I fully agree with you about Brita. That was a really weird subplot. It reminded me of those people who defended abusers during the MeToo: "Well, this person has always been nice to ME, therefore they're fine." That's literally how abusers operate. They are awful behind closed doors, and then pretend to be nice to everyone else, while gaslighting their own victims.
Also, Frankie's argument that "parents are just human beings" is terrible. Yes, parents are human beings, but that doesn't justify abuse. Yes, human beings are flawed, but that doesn't excuse treating others horribly. You can't abuse someone and then turn around and say: "Well, I'm just a human being, and I'm flawed." There are plenty of human beings who aren't abusers.
This false dichotomy that people can either be perfect or abusers is absurd.
With abusers, they're going to manipulate their victims, how do we know their not trying to manipulate those around them also?

The way Britta's parents are so dismissive and gaslighting about her experience and feelings sucks. The fact that they refuse to respect even the boundary of "no contact" Britta is trying to maintain shows me that they aren't changed enough to give her what she needs in that relationship. Maybe they never will be. I've met too many parents that would rather wonder, "what went wrong?" than ever listen to their children's list of griefs without denial. Ah, well.

I sort of agree with how you feel about britta. But personally, from what I’ve seen of her throughout the series. I’m more inclined to believe that the stories she tells about her parents are grossly exaggerated because she wanted to feel like a rebel.
She was a rebel, she ran away from home at 17. The part of her that never grew up is the part that still needs that to be her identity, while also desperately needing the attention and affirmations she never got from her parents. That's my take, anyway.

Britta's parents are legit terrible people. They were terrible and then gaslit her into thinking they were fine. I never understood that. She should have beene even MORE pissed!
It’s Dan Harmon channeling his own history with his parents. He’s talked about the process that a lot of older people go through which is eventually realizing that his parents aren’t going to own up to their mistakes and that he has sort of lost the energy behind needing/expecting it to come from them.
they were not good parents when she was growing up, but from what is said in the show calling them "terrible people" is quite a stretch.
@@Sagitarria Might be the only message of his other than being anti U.N. that I outright dissagree with. Either that, or did a horrible job presenting that concept of letting go as opposed to presenting it as her just accepting the gasslighting. Also, not only do I own up to every single mistake I made as a father, they literally keep me up at night! Good parents absolutley will admit their mistakes and wrong doings. Good parents that is.

@@RandomPickles more that he just gave up. The show does present them as good people. It just shows that this happens. I’m personally dealing with it as my parents age. I have every right not to talk to them ever again but In my 40s I’ve starting helping them as they become senile and near death.

No the Britta's parents episode always makes me so mad because her feelings are dismissed and she's completely right. On the one hand Britta is overly guarded like Jeff, but on the other hand she has every right to be that way. I think they were trying to show with this episode that she is a lot like Jeff but it was a slight misfire. I don't entirely mind Britta's parents though, I tend to like them more on each rewatch.

When Troy left, as did some whimsy. When Shirley left, as did some wholesomeness. When Pierce left, as did the extremism. All of these things lead to the show feeling much more grounded. It's still a funny show, it's just... not as playful.

they werent good parents(not terrible people, just not good parents), but people can chang.
finite transgressions dont require infinite punishment(which is one of the reasons most people reject christianity).
Parents who fail to treat their children well create deep attachment wounds. They have no right to then demand that the children they estranged love them dearly. They didn't earn it.

I wholeheartedly agree that people can change and that we should allow them space to do so without holding their transgressions over their heads for infinity. My main issue is the dismissiveness in which everyone is reacting to Britta's feelings. Even when she brings up some examples of ways they mistreated her in childhood, they essentially tell her to get over it. And while I believe that people shouldn't be reduced to the worst thing they've ever done, especially if they've shown growth, the people who you've wronged don't ~owe~ you forgiveness. I have friends who don't speak with their parents for good reason, and I literally can't imagine questioning the validity of their memories because I've personally had good experiences with their parents. At the end of the day, the decision to forgive her parents is, imo, up to Britta and Britta alone, and shouldn't be brute forced because everyone else has decided it's time.

britta is in her 30s.
she left home at 17. so she's had over 13 years to deal with her issues. i dismiss her feelings because she seems to be gravely exaggerating her parents actions. they were not monsters, just a bit overprotective and strict. she should have gotten over it. holding grudges for decades, over things that werent even that bad, is the wrong way to live. of course it's up to her if she wants to grow up or not.

Britta actually has a really dark and horrific backstory that Dan Harmon confirmed.
I won’t discuss it here, but there are clues throughout the seasons. Specifically, Britta interrupting the fake psychologist before he could get to her trauma and her dressing up like a dinosaur in one of the Halloween episodes.
Interesting 🤔🤔 idk if it has anything to do with her parents, but they did seem pretty horrific during her childhood

There are some good Reddit threads regarding her backstory. I’d recommend checking it out after you finish the show (as there could be spoilers).
Duncan also alludes to it in I think the S1 finale when she has a therapy scene.
