Yea, including a proposed OT rule change in this video was really stupid. Anyone with a brain can agree that both teams should have a possession in OT regardless of if their defense is trash or not.
Not to mention the fact that football has been changed drastically in the last decades to become an offensively focused game with rules centered around that.
I want to see the NFL try doing a shootout style of play in regular season OT. Place kicks and drop kick field goals til someone misses. Unrushed, untimed. This would eliminate high risk of injury for a potential tie game.
Iirc, it wasn't just Elway that proposed the 4th and 15 rule if you score. That idea was originally proposed by Greg Schiano because of one of his players at Florida State having an injury that completely destroyed his career on a regular kickoff. The idea is basically that on 4th and 15, most teams elect to punt anyway, and punt returns are much safer than kick returns, but going for it is just as successful, if not more successful, than an onside kick.
Punt returns are more fun, safer and have better decision making prospects. Players on both side of the ball have a more viable options. The 4th and 15 rule is a good idea.
0/10 football fans agree w the OT rules though, theyre by far the dumbest in all of sports and until the video ive never heard of anyone who thought otherwise
Laugh it up now, the NFL is already heading that way. Watching the highlights from some of the preseason games, I saw one reciever put himself in the position to have a pass interference call made without attempting to even reach for the ball even though he easily could of. Soon enough it's going to become the NFL's version of the "dive"
I just think it's funny that some fans can't admit that sometimes both teams just play equally in a game, so why shouldn't the result be equal as well?
@@quinnschroetlin yea it's a shame what sports are slowly turning into. Of course the athletes are more talented nowadays, but definitely had more heart, respect for the game, and toughness back in the day
Both teams should get the ball in overtime. You mention that a coin flip is a perfectly fair 50/50 chance, however football is not a game of chance; it's a game of skill. One team shouldn't randomly be awarded a win just because they get the ball first. The argument of "learn to play defense" doesn't even work here. Both teams deserve a chance to drive down the field and score. All penalties *absolutely should be reviewable*. The Patriots are correct here. The fact that it might take more time to review them is irrelevant; the point is that referees are human and make mistakes... frequently. There should be opportunities to find and correct those mistakes on the spot. Penalties can *literally change the outcome of games*. Saints fans will tell you this firsthand. Lol, Elway just reproposed the Greg Schiano proposal, and it's actually genius the way he designed it. Chart Party anyone?
On your first point, the NFL would be *way* better off if they just adopted the college overtime rule, or did a combination of the two, but it is just a load of bs that if you win a coin toss, and you score a TD, you win.
@Rich Affinito And yet you don't justify your opinion... Please, tell me the negative consequences of allowing referees to correct their mistakes and ensure a fair outcome to football games.
@Rich Affinito The entire crux of your argument is that "blown calls are okay and a part of the game, deal with it." That... doesn't work. They're not okay and they shouldn't be a part of the game. I'm partially sympathetic to the "games are already long enough" argument, but when your choice is either that or continue allowing things that damage the integrity of the game, you pick the former option every time.
I'm 44, and I went from being a "Die Hard" NFL fan to a "I barely care anymore" fan. So many things have ruined this once great game. In no particular order: 1) Not knowing what a catch is 2) Rule changes to make it so easy to score and impossible to play defense 3)Off the field drama being covered more than the actual games 4)Roger G having no idea how to administer fines and punishments fairly or consistently 5) Caring more about if a player smokes weed (legal in many states now) or if they are a POS scumbag that beats women and children 6) Thursday night games every week 7) Players, and owners only care about their own ego's and brands, and have watered down anything that used to feel like a "Team" sport. They don't care about your team, why should you? I'm sure there are a lot more reasons, and I'm finding it very hard to care about the NFL anymore, which is sad, I truly used to love this League.

The 4th and 15th proposal was also about the safety of kickoff returns vs punt returns. A college coach had one of his players paralyzed from a kickoff and proposed that team should get the ball on the 35 on 4th and 15. Most of the time they’d punt, which is still special teams obviously, but they also could go for it. Honestly onside kicks are boring cuz it’s all about the chance of which way the ball bounces
The Alliance of American Football did away with kickoffs completely. After a score, the other team would simply get the ball at the 25, or the scoring team could opt for the "onside conversion" (4th and 12 from their own 28) in certain situations. I watched plenty of AAF games and never missed the kickoffs. It was safer for the players, and the fans could enjoy the game going almost immediately to the next possession without having to wait for the kickoff, only to have it result in a touchback most of the time.
@@TimurTripp2 The XFL kickoffs looked a little goofy but I liked them (only the kicker was at the spot of the kick--the coverage team lined up on like the opponent's 35 with the return team like 10 yards away, thus preventing huge running starts and collisions). I didn't miss the kickoffs in the AAF either but they're so synonymous with football and such a part of our lexicon that I *would* kinda be sad to see them go away entirely. I forget how the XFL handled onside kicks, probably something similar to AAF.
TyronasaurusRx 7 it seemed to be more of a saving special teams thing, but it would make close games way more competitive at the end and with onside kicks being so unlikely to succeed now the NFL has already practically eliminated the effectiveness of the onside kick
Replacing the kickoff entirely with the 4th and 15, the "Schiano Rule", is not a bad idea. You still get a legitimate football play, some might argue one more entertaining than a kickoff or onside kick, but it is less dangerous for players. I'd be very interested in seeing it play tested in a few preseason games at least. It isn't what we're used to, but it could be fun with that edge of the fake punt thrown in there.

There is literally 0 reason why ties should ever occur. Just do it like college football. Keep playing until someone fails to score. It's not a difficult concept
@@markdavis7397 Mathematically it is exactly as though the game never happened. Ties in standings are solved through playoff games and head to head matchups. It is literally impossible for two teams in the same division to go undefeated. It is literally impossible for two teams in the same conference to go undefeated. They will play each other at some point and the result will favor one or the other and the tie will just sit there having the same effect as a loss.
@@markdavis7397 Failure to win = a loss. If you play a game and don't win, you lose. Did you want that when Tim Tebow's Broncos beat the Steelers after the Steelers CHOSE to kickoff? Doubt it. Because everyone looooved the OT rules after that game. Suddenly, the Pats win a couple big games in OT and the rules aren't so great anymore.
BeefPapa college football overtime is best. Get it at opponent’s 20, both teams have a shot. After 2 OTs no more kicking. Goes way faster and is way more exciting than pro overtime. If the Rainbow Warriors from Hawaii can travel long distances to play college football, without being paid, then I think an NFL team can work in London, in the distant future.
As a side note, the reason Tom Brady wants to trademark Tom Terrific is that he hates that nickname. Therefore I propose that we only refer to him as such.
07:40 i don't agree. Its so much easier to score than to defend. I think both teams should always bet the chance to tie the game. And if it end up in a tie, instead of making a tie, make a shootout like in soccer. For example both teams get 5 attempts and it will always go 5 yards further back and the shooter always have to change. If 5 goals are in than the first to not score loses and still go back 5 yards
The nfl’s overtime rules should be the same as college football, but none of that start from the 25 crap. They can get the damn ball down the field by themselves.
I like the start at the 25 It feels more exciting and more sudden Typically overtime will be on late, so it gives a nice rush of excitement that can keep me up
One good idea the NFL should adopt is the CFL's "single", where a ball kicked into the end zone and not returned is a point for the kicking team. No more free touchbacks!
Yes this is a good idea but the nfl pushed kickoffs forward( I think) so that the return team doesn’t return it. Too many people got hurt, supposedly and they don’t want kick returns
How about, getting rid of that, we go with the 4th and 15, but now on every kickoff, so teams punt instead of risking their guys getting injured on kickoffs?
I agree 100% but the NFL is trying to eliminate special teams entirely. It’s like the fair catch rule completely stupid. Make a no yards rule and players will have to hold up and won’t bail over the returner at full speed because they have to stay at least 5 yards away. CFL special team rules make a million times more sense but the NFL just doesn’t like making sense
The 4th and 15 rule is a fun idea, after you score or to start a half you have the choice to punt or try to keep ball by playing a 4th and 15 situation.
I like how he said a proven lie when he said 9/10 NFL fans don't think overtime rules need changed, before the 2018 off-season 69% of NFL fans questioned agreed a change should happen, after the 2018 season ended that number went up to 74%, and I'm not even a chiefs fan, I'm a fan of the Gotham City Knights, I just think that allowing luck to play such a large factor in overtime has no place in any professional league
I agree with you 100% on the Chargers. That team does NOT belong in Los Angeles, and L.A. doesn't deserve two teams, especially since the city didn't really seem to care when they went 20 years without one. Rams? OK, yeah, they belong back in L.A. Chargers? NO WAY.
The Chargers and Rams deserve to be in LA because the owners wanted that idea and because both STL and SD failed to help those teams get new stadium. SD voters voted down the DT stadium in a heartbeat because it'll be publicly funded. They will surely voted down the Misson Valley proposal too because it required public funding, but it ended up being a new stadium for SDSU Aztecs which is paid by the school. The city of SD screwed over the Chargers, plus voters don't want their tax money spent towards a Chargers new stadium.
College football OT is miles better. NFL OT is fine for a low scoring game because at least that means both teams offense and defense are fairly equal or at least cancel out. In a shootout it really does become whoever wins the coin flip wins since neither defense could stop a ball rolling on the field let alone an offense. In NCAA OT it comes down to who can make the first stop in a shootout and in a low scoring game it's whoever can score first. It's perfect. By the way I appreciate the end clip. That was a nice way to end it
Ok, 2 things: First, if we are giving coaches only 2 challenges (and a 3rd if they win both) and taking away a time out for losing, then EVERY penalty or play should be reviewable, especially when the refs are getting them wrong. It doesn’t make sense that only some penalties can be reviewed. Second, “home field advantage” should come with some advantages besides some of the people in the stands cheering for you. Home field advantage should mean there is no coin toss, the home team gets to choose automatically. But I don’t like the sudden death overtime rule and I’m glad they changed it up so a FG doesn’t win it automatically (I don’t like college’s version either). Ok, I lied, number 3. While John Madden is the greatest commentator ever, I loved Dennis Miller as a commentator and it’s a tragedy he was let go.
10:41 something like this is already happening in Rugby League with the Toronto Wolfpack playing in the British system (with a team in New York apparently on the way), apparently its they have a month in the UK and then a month in Canada. The British system also has 2 teams in France but France isn't as much of a problem as a team in North America. Personally I thought when it was first announced that the NFL take notes but there's wayyy more money in the NFL than in British Rugby League at the moment
Maybe it's because I'm a casual fan at best, but I don't think there should be sudden death in playoff overtime. The game should be extended by a full 15 minute quarter, to be played to completion, then if the score is still tied, the game can enter sudden death. I also love the idea of an 18 game season with players limited to 16 starts, so long as it starts earlier rather than ending later. The season is super short compared to other sports, we don't even get to see every team play each other. A longer season will make the sport less random, and it's champion more legit. Limiting players to 16 games will keep the inury risk the same, while shaking up strategy and giving opportunities to under utilized talent
Don't those specialized facemasks actually *prevent* facemasking penalties? You can't get your fingers through those chicken-wire-style masks. It's not like they add any considerable weight for helmet-to-helmet hits or anything.
It is banned, because large facemasks add weight into helmet, and make it more dangerous to player wearing it and player who gets hit by it. Mostly by making the helmet more front-heavy and adding stress to players neck.
@@RoyalMela I feel like you're not offering up any information to the open question I asked. How much weight is added by way of a specialized cage as opposed to the one sanctioned by the NFL?
Being a Jaxonville fan I’d hate to see them go to London....I’m friends with a couple of the players and well you could see why. +Jaxonville fans are loyal.
Games would be interminable. And do you review every *play* to see if a penalty occurred if one wasn't called? Or we do only review penalties that are called on the field? If it's the latter, you're going to see more flags because officials are going to use the same logic they use on possible fumbles, which is "If we call it, we can fix it in replay." Put a sky judge in the booth who has the ability to call for flags to be thrown or rule enforcements to be made from watching on a monitor.
I think if a team moves to another country it should be Canada. The NHL has done it and they have their own league. I'm pretty sure Toronto would love to have another team.

Okay the pats chiefs game was crazy. The offenses were too good. Whoever won the coin toss was winning the game. I’ve been saying for years both teams need to get possession. That’s like baseball’s OT being golden goal (golden run?). Whoever bats first has a huge advantage. Why would they change a major part of the game in OT. It isn’t even the same game the teams have been playing. An integral part of the game is playing offense AND defense. You can be weak in one if you are stronger in the other. You have to be able to match or surpass what the other team just did. So it goes into overtime and the game can end in one team playing offense? If you watched that game you know whoever got the ball first was winning that game. I’m not a pats fan or a chiefs fan either just really into rules and fairness

Yeah nice take NFL, how about you learn from the last time you did literally the same thing. You may have started in LA, but it's kind of like taking the Rams back to Cleveland, no one knows what for. Definitely no one cares.
A football game shouldn’t depend on the flip a coin. I think overtime should have 2 halves with 7 1/2 minutes each. Each team getting the ball at least once
I agree with Andy Reid on this one. In the NBA both teams have possessions in OT. In MLB both teams get equal possessions until one team scores more on their possession than the other. In MLS and NHL the action is ongoing and the odds of scoring in overtime without both teams having a crack at it is extremely low. So why not give both NFL teams at least one equal shot before going to sudden death, especially in an era where offenses are more high scoring and the rules favor pass catchers? If you have an overtime with two teams whose strengths are on offense, you're basically penalizing the team that loses the OT coin toss.
Special teams are a part of the game, but the kickoff is the worst part of football in every possible way. Punts are exciting. FGs are as well. The kick off is shit. SBNation and John Bois even did a thing in how kick returns are boring as well. If anything, it should always be 4th and 15 and teams can just punt it, go for it, or even pull off that fake punt pass.
While Belichek being in favor of it makes it less appealing I agree that any call (or non-call) by referees should be reviewable. But they should make a few other adjustments to hopefully speed it up. First, all reviews will be sent a central replay location that is not monitoring a game until they are called upon. Second, they are not told what the call on the field is. All they are told the call they have to make. Did the player get both feet in bounds? But they don't know if the call on the field was initially yes or no. They have 60 seconds to review, if they can't make a determination in that time the call stands. If they do make a determination that is the call. Finally, teams are not limited on the number of reviews, however, if they are wrong they lose a timeout and a loss of down if they are the offensive team, or an automatic first down if they are the defensive team. If the play that is upheld already gives the offensive team a first down, the defense is assessed a 5 year penalty and it is 1st and 5 for the offense.

Also this doesn't kill Special Teams. It just merges kickoff returning into punt returning.
It was adopted by the AAFL and I liked it along w/no kickoffs or extra pts.. It kept the game moving along.

Of course the athletes are more talented nowadays, but definitely had more heart, respect for the game, and toughness back in the day
@@jaylew889 I'm surprised that the NFL doesn't have a "dive" by now. There are already a lot of penalties called.
People bitching about blown calls has been a think literally forever in the NFL especially after they introduced the challenge system
@@Aragon1500 And once again, that doesn't justify allowing those blown calls to stand.

I'm 44, and I went from being a "Die Hard" NFL fan to a "I barely care anymore" fan. So many things have ruined this once great game. In no particular order:
1) Not knowing what a catch is
2) Rule changes to make it so easy to score and impossible to play defense
3)Off the field drama being covered more than the actual games
4)Roger G having no idea how to administer fines and punishments fairly or consistently
5) Caring more about if a player smokes weed (legal in many states now) or if they are a POS scumbag that beats women and children
6) Thursday night games every week
7) Players, and owners only care about their own ego's and brands, and have watered down anything that used to feel like a "Team" sport. They don't care about your team, why should you?
I'm sure there are a lot more reasons, and I'm finding it very hard to care about the NFL anymore, which is sad, I truly used to love this League.

@@jarradchapman4271 I see what you did there 😂
The 4th and 15th proposal was also about the safety of kickoff returns vs punt returns.
Actually idk if the 4th and 15 rule is all that bad
TyronasaurusRx 7 it seemed to be more of a saving special teams thing, but it would make close games way more competitive at the end and with onside kicks being so unlikely to succeed now the NFL has already practically eliminated the effectiveness of the onside kick

@@will-power5453 15 is statistically good enough.

@@markdavis7397 They're pointless. It's as though the game never even happened
@@markdavis7397 Mathematically it is exactly as though the game never happened. Ties in standings are solved through playoff games and head to head matchups. They will play each other at some point and the result will favor one or the other and the tie will just sit there having the same effect as a loss.
@@markdavis7397 Failure to win = a loss. If you play a game and don't win, you lose. The other team was not good enough to do that
I still think both teams should get the ball in OT, that way both offenses and defenses of both teams have to play
Jacob Davis chiefs proposed that. It didn’t pass

BeefPapa college football overtime is best. Get it at opponent’s 20, both teams have a shot. After 2 OTs no more kicking. Goes way faster and is way more exciting than pro overtime.

07:40 i don't agree. Its so much easier to score than to defend. I think both teams should always bet the chance to tie the game. And if it end up in a tie, instead of making a tie, make a shootout like in soccer. One good idea the NFL should adopt is the CFL's "single", where a ball kicked into the end zone and not returned is a point for the kicking team. No more free touchbacks!
The NFL wants to avoid runbacks so they'd never adopt that rule.
Now THAT is something I would favor - definitely!
The only thing wrong with the 4th and 15 rule is it doesn't go far enough. The NFL should abolish kickoffs and introduce the onside conversion instead
The 4th and 15 rule is a fun idea, after you score or to start a half you have the choice to punt or try to keep ball by playing a 4th and 15 situation.
I think that they shouldnt get to choose every single time they score maybe you get to try 4th and 15 one time per half

Ah yes, Roger Goodell. Every football fan's favorite person.

The British system also has 2 teams in France but France isn't as much of a problem as a team in North America. Personally I thought when it was first announced that the NFL take notes but there's wayyy more money in the NFL than in British Rugby League at the moment
Move the extra point back to the 2 yard line and have the person that scored the touchdown kick the extra point
Now that would be a great idea!
I love that
Maybe it's because I'm a casual fan at best, but I don't think there should be sudden death in playoff overtime.

Face masking someone and celebrating a little too much after scoring would amount to the same amount of penalty yardage

Scorigami is my jam :) #GoJonBois
Special teams are a part of the game, but the kickoff is the worst part of football in every possible way.
Punts are exciting. FGs are as well. The kick off is shit. SBNation and John Bois even did a thing in how kick returns are boring as well.
If anything, it should always be 4th and 15 and teams can just punt it, go for it, or even pull off that fake punt pass.
also can you do a video on the extending the post season idea and the Jay Z deal
Dennis Miller was a strange fit. However he is better then Cris Collinsworth.
He just didn't fit period.
Not true
10:32 he's literally complain because Tom Brady made the a galaxy brain throw while other small brain quarterback throw the ball into triple coverage because apparently throwing to the open man is a bad thing i guess. never show me dumb shit like that ever again.
Can U do a video on the new “car seat” rules/laws and how that will effect Kyler Murray’s ability to run massive amounts of plays as a front seat or back seat driver 😶🤣😳😶 thanks ahead of time
LOL
