My dad gave me a cassette tape of Academy of Ancient Music’s recording of Mozart’s Requiem when I was about 13 and I was hooked in a moment. I love this voice as much today as 30+ years ago when I first heard her. I ended up studying early music because of her. There is no other voice like hers.

She is the queen of Sopranos when it comes to this period. Her voice is like class, her technique is just wonderful, the perfect use of vibrato coupled with wonderful sustain. She balances both so well and uses each so effectively.
Can't explain why, but some music simply brings tears to my eyes with its beauty - particularly when it is sung by such an astonishingly beautiful voice. What a combination Vivaldi and Ms Kirkby make!

I was advised to buy Kirby's version of Mozart's "Excultate Jubilate", because it was written for a boy soprano. Sure enough, Dame Emma can sing without vibratto. In Vivaldi's "Nulla..." Her vibratto is beatifully expressed! She can sing anything, without sliding up to notes like most. Best of all, it is the purest pleasure to listen to her!
The motet that Exultate Jubilate is in was written for the Castrato Venanzio Rauzzini not a boy Soprano. But that’s a moot point not sure what either of those voice types have to do with the employment of vibrato... You have musical traditions of a certain time frame and then you have voice types they are different things. While in baroque music vibrato wasn’t used continuously it was used. Castrati and all voice types in the 18th century used vibrato in that manner and not a la opera singers of today. But castrati and boy sopranos of the 19th century certainly did as it was the era of full fledged romanticism and vibrato was the norm. Modern day Boy Sopranos also do and do not have vibrato. Again, not sure what a voice type has to do with a musical practice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I fully agree with you about the ubiquitous "sliding up" to notes. Yuk. They give it a fancy Italian name to make it sound more legitimate - glissando. However I love it descending the notes.
I have been searching for this song since I first saw the movie "Shine". I thought this mystery, to me, singer was an angel and I had no idea this was Vivaldi, though I should have guessed as I have some of his music, as well as the DVD Shine. Thank you so much for sharing this.
I saw her often in the '80s, when she was supposedly in her prime, and produced a few workshops at which she appeared. Then she seemed to disappear from the scene. So glad to see this, even though it's not contemporary. Her voice deepened and got richer after she had her child, and the years have been very kind to her. She reminds me of Elly Ameling now, although the latter didn't specialize in EM as Emma did/does.
One of the most musical singers on record. I saw her live in Canada a few months ago and she was absolutely sublime, still, in her sixties. So happy I got to see her before she retires.
I have to pinch myself to realise how old she is. I still think of her as "The young soprano Emma Kirkby" which was how she used to be announced on BBC R3 in the late '70s/early '80s.

People love to hate on Kirkby. She's charming. And she DOES have vibrato, it's just not wildly fluctuating in pitch, it stays very close to the pitch written. I'd rather have this actually than someone singing with wild vibrato because Kirkby is always in-tune, never sharp or flat. It's basic musicianship elevated.

Andrew Manze leading the orchestra! Check out his Vaughan Williams Symphony recordings. There's a beautiful video of him conducting RVW at the BBC proms. Well worth a watch. As for Emma Kirkby - truly outstanding - hers really is the standard for this piece and many others.
The standard for this motet is Magda Kalmár (recorded on Hungaroton in the 70's with other gem-motets by Vivaldi) then comes the wonderful Kirkby (she makes here several "da capo" with multiple ornaments). Kalmár's is a firework yet with splendid creamy voice and the orchestra (neither on period instruments nor ancient-wise performed) is velvety and reminiscent of the glorious Paillard and Ristenpart era. I don't know your personal taste, but if you can get the CD (ex-LP), don't miss it. Salutes from snowy Mount-Lebanon.

There is something special about the way Emma Kirkby sings. She does not need the "heavy warbling vibrato" that most sopranos seem to force out of their lungs.
My favourite piece sung by my favourite soprano... telling us - as if we didn't know - there's no true peace in this world. If you like this, try what as I see as a companion piece, also by Vivaldi, Cum Dederit (Sandrine Piau does it best for my money)

I like how she doesn't overdo the vibrato... it's so much more effective when saved for long or emotive notes
