Once I started rowing the boat life was better.

Had a similar situation happen to me, friend cast overhead and his lure got stuck in the top of my head. I tried to push the hook thru and pull it out but ended up going to the E.R. and the doc used stitching thread to remove the lure. Friend got the lure back and we had a good laugh.
I've had this happen before while deep sea fishing in the gulf. Caught me in the back of my head and hooked into my scalp. Three inch four barb hook. Was not a fun day.
This is why I'm always an advocate of crimping the barbs on your hooks or buying barbless hooks. Less visits to the hospital. Any decent fisherman can keep a fish on a barbless hook as long as they keep their rod tip up and don't flip the fish. Also a decent pair of pliers or a bolt cutter would have worked
