    This was awful, not one joke landed, it felt forced, it was cheap looking and felt like we gotta push our daughters day at the office.

      It was unwatchable. Compared to all his other movies this and tusk are terrible. Jay and silent bob and clerks 2 are great, also mallrats is a classic and dogma is funny

    i like how Kevin Smith has literally completely given up on his appearance and just wears the same sloppy ass oversized shorts and hockey style jersey every day. He's done it for years and I'm not being sarcastic. he looks comfortable as hell and no one seems to mind that he constantly looks like he just woke up. I get shit from people if I wear the same thing 2 days in a row, but damnit who cares. I'm literally jealous of Kevin Smith. i want people to take me seriously if I'm walking around in flannel Panama pants and a stained shirt

      But it you pay attention, follow his facebook or any other source... he posts tons of videos daily of him doing stuff at the house and other places.
      And he's wearing tons of different clothes.
      He wears the shorts and hockey jerseys out in public, for events and shows. In his private life, he dresses like everybody else.

      I wish there was a secret organization using Kevin Smith to attract fans who will all be put on their secret list so they'll be killed, kicked out of the country, sterilized, or something. But I'm afraid that's just not going to happen.
      Kevin Smith has turned into such an abomination at this point and yet has so many fans I feel like it's a travesty and there should be some crazy guy to assassinate people like him for the greater good. I blame disability and anti depressents for this. The crazy assasins aren't doing their jobs anymore.

    I can´t think of one single teenager nowadays that is not fucking unbearable in movies. There are no Marty McFly´s, Ferrys Buller´s, Breakfast clubs, or Goonies any more in movies.

  • @JohnnyBurnes

    Just watched the movie, and NO it's not good, but to the folks calling nepotism, when hasn't Kevin interspersed his loved ones into his movies?
    What season's Comic Book Men on?
    How about his wife in Clerks 2?
    And there's Jason, his teenage friend he asked to play himself....
    There're plenty of reasons to dislike the movie. Harley and her childhood friend being the leads isn't why.

      bigevilworldwide1 I was the only one in the theater when I went to see Clerks 2. I am fan of his earlier works cause that's what I grew up with. I'm finding fans of his newer movies are more fans of Kevin Smith the person rather than his work, so they give his work a pass regardless of it's quality.

      You're like a woman who keeps getting hit by her husband but believes him when he says he loves her and defends him to all her friends and family. Kevin Smith did not make that movie for his dad. He made it because he thought it would make money and he's just a huge lying shill that will say whatever he thinks people will believe.
      Saying he made his shitty movie for his dad is about as great an excuse as saying your dog ate your homework. Do you believe anything people tell you?

    I respect your opinion, but I caught this at a Fathom event, and it's in my running for worst of the year so far (along with 31).
    Kevin Smith needs to have some discipline and NOT get baked while he's writing. His poor daughter is going to catch so much hell, and it's not even her fault.
    Johnny Depp, on the other hand, deserves ALL the venom for his reprisal of the "Cottonball Clouseau" from Tusk. Depp's act has stretch marks on it at this point, even watching him portray Captain Jack in Pirates has lost its luster.

    Thank You for being so reasonable in your reviews. This was a film made by two names that could get the funding to make a project for their daughters and have a blast doing it. And they achieved it. It wasn't made for the usual Kevin Smith Crowd but I can still respect what he did even though it's pretty unfunny. I actually enjoyed Tusk in a so bad it's good way and I think that was part of the idea with it being so over the top. Kevin is a huge inspiration to me and he's never been perfect but I don't think I would enjoy him as much if he were

    I liked the goofiness of the movie and the overall idea of it, but the execution was just mediocre. The jokes are badly timed, there is not too much chemistry between the lead characters, there is no tension, the songs really annoyed me. I did not care for the bad FX, as it is an independent production. But it is not a matter of budget to fix the timing or the dialogue.

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That was pretty much the point. Smith is friends with Depp and a producer was willing to throw money at them to make a movie with Depp in it. Why not? If someone was willing to give me a ton of money to make a film with my friends and family, you bet I'd jump on it.

    • @JamesW6179
      @JamesW6179 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not saying he shouldn't take the money, but I also don't see how it's anything better than say, the guys who put together music videos for rich kids like Rebecca Black.

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well for one, there is a lot more skill involved. Its not just one guy who came up with a beat and had a girl sing a bad tune in an afternoon. The movie had a lot of talent behind it, all doing it for fun. It was a low enough budget that they knew it would make its money back so really, they were all just goofing off and enjoying themselves, which is something you don't get to do on huge 100 million budget films.
      If its not your cup of tea, thats fine. This wasn't the kind of movie that was made to have mass appeal.

    • @JamesW6179
      @JamesW6179 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, but that still absolutely falls under the umbrella of vanity project. "After Earth" unarguably had talent behind it, and a budget, but it still was a suspect project from the start that existed in an attempt to promote their less-talented kid than tell a good story. I am sure that After Earth was probably someone out there's "cup of tea", but it still was kinda blatant nepotism, much like this film.

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      After Earth took it a little further though. Will Smith got M Night the project but then armchair directed nearly the whole thing.
      Nepotism in Hollywood is nothing new. Gwenth Paltrow, Emma Roberts, Sofia Coppela, Angelina Jolie, Leslie Mann, Ava Amurri, Rumor Willis, Ben Stiller, Colin Hanks, Miley Cyrus, and many more. The difference is, Smith isn't pushing his kid into some massive movie. He's putting her in these small projects that won't be seen very much outside of his core fanbase.

    if someone admires craft, piss on you for trying to shit on them.
    let it be.
    anyways, I felt like you could have skipped the first minute where you pretty much put tons of disclaimer for the high and mighty haters.

    I saw it on August 30th, and I did enjoy it. It had it's moments. My mind is, the girls had fun and Kevin had fun too. I heard the story about Tusk and how Johnny Depp was excited to act along side his daughter, he thought it was the coolest thing. I can respect Johnny for that.

  • @MrJackfaire

    I have to say I would rather watch a movie where actors playing a non-famous garage band that will undoubtedly break up before high school is bad. I am kind of sick of every single person whose in a "shitty" garage band either being over the top terrible where it's not believable that they realize how bad they are or they are so good they couldn't be considered bad.
    The last good "bad musician" in a movie/TV was Lisa Kudrow because she played it true to the character and wouldn't let the show runners get her lessons or do anything with her to improve her skill beyond what Phoebe would have.

    I've liked the fact that kevin smith has taken risks on his last few films. Everyone I talked with either have never heard of or hated Red State. I personally loved it, thinking that the performances were all top notch and the film as a whole was very entertaining. The same goes with Tusk. It was like a one man, Canadian Human Centipede and everyone in that did a great job. Depp was a little over the top but I still liked his character. And now with this one, I am actually looking forward to it. Kudos to those who think outside the box and dont give us another cookie cutter haunting or killer in the woods.

    I'm still a Kevin Smith fan, but his recent output leaves a lot to be desired. I haven't seen Red State yet, so it might be unfair to judge him too harshly, but Cop Out and Tusk were huge misfires.
    The first two thirds of Tusk I was into. I think he built up a decent atmosphere, Justin Long was good, and Michael Parks was excellent as that creepy old fuck with a walrus fetish. The body horror was great at first, really fucked up when he had his arms and legs removed and he was lying on the table screaming. Then the movie derailed spectacularly, Smith must've smoked some really strong shit, and he threw it all away for tremendously unfunny characters and dialogue. Depp's detective was atrocious, and his flashback scene with Parks retroactively killed any menace that character ever had. Then he showed the full walrus suit....fuck me, what an idiot. I'm sure that was funny in his pot-addled mind, but what a waste of legitimately good atmosphere and buildup. What could've been a great horror concept was killed because Smith had to follow through on the dumbass yucks he got when talking about the concept on his podcast.
    The movie made me mad due to that wasted potential...if he'd have just followed through into the final act with what came before. Instead he had to have a half-assed Clouseau impression and a big dumb rubber suit. What a dumbass.

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Red State was really, really good.
      The thing with Cop Out, he explains a lot of what happened in one of his spoken words. Essentially, it was undone by Bruce Willis who fought him the entire time.
      Tusk he spoke about for about a half hour before Yoga Hosers and explained how that happened. He joked about it on his podcast, his audience demanded it and a producer called him up with 3 million telling him "I just want to see if you can do it."
      As far as Yoga Hosers, he was talking to Johnny Depp and they thought it would be cool to make a film with their kids. Plain as that.
      So really, Smith is just stretching his legs artistically. He's trying new genres and weird movies which may not work for everyone but at least he's not just crapping out the same thing year after year. I respect that.

      I agree about cop out but disagree with Tusk. I rather liked it a lot. A lot more than say Zack and Miri make a Porno. Red State is fantastic though. Definitely see red state. Red State goes in the opposite direction. Starts off mildly funny then just turns inside out with fucked up psychological horror. Michael Parks is evil as fuck as a religious zealot and it just works in a lot of ways.

    Honestly I do not think that CopOut should be considered a Kevin Smith movie anymore than The Flash is a Kevin Smith TV show. Whereas with most movies he directs he also wrote them and was in on the casting the whole way with CopOut he was directing someone else's work and writing. He was just the director which for him isn't a usual state of being with movie's he's helming.
    Jersey Girls I think works really well if you are in a simliar place as the main character. AT the time I had also had my dream career snatched away by circumstances and was figuring out my relationship with my kid and kind of a "what do I do now" kind of thing.

    I'm a big Hollywood Babble-On fan, so it was awesome to see Ralph Garman hamming it up.
    It's hilarious to see all these know-nothing "movie fans" and fake hipster critics diss this for being a vanity project for his daughter and "just more Hollywood nepotism" when both girls have been making other, much more conventional movies and both (or, all involved, rather) went into this knowing it was gonna be a niche film that idiots would be foaming at the mouth in preparation to hate it, not a vehicle to catapult anyone's career.

Then again, Tusk is my second favorite Smith movie behind Clerks, so this was a given. And honesty, I really want him to make Moose Jaws already.

    I didn't hate this with the vitriol most people do. but it's definitely not very good. I will admit I laughed a couple times and the performances by Harley Quinn and Lily Rose were not bad. but the constant "aboot" jokes got old real quick. And Ralph Garmans impression schtick was pretty grating. I'll probably forget this film by tomorrow.

      Kevin went on tour from state to state with the movie and played it mostly at arthouse theaters. I saw it on a "release" party one night showing where they ran it from one location and sent it out to theaters around the US. Before the movie Kevin talked for about a half hour and explained the history behind how the film came together. Afterwards they ran a Q&A session from a previous date.
      I think he said it should be on home video in the fall.

    With the exceptio of chasing amy (even with pretenious dialog) Dogma,jeresy girl and res state. his movies are kinda bad.

    • @charleshetrick3152
      @charleshetrick3152 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Qweq Qweq he was raised catholic. His biggest problem with Christianity is the church not the religion. Things like West Burrow Baptist church protesting soldiers’ funerals with profane signs, priest sex abuse scandals and so forth. Those are the reasons he has problems with religion, in general he’s a live and let live sort.

    • @charleshetrick3152

      Qweq Qweq I still like most of his films. Politically I depart with him on the 2nd amendment issue. I’m an energetic supporter of civilian firearms ownership. I happen to also be an atheist but I find it ironic Christians I’ve come across for the most part are more accepting than the so called tolerant left political ideology.

      charles hetrick I used to be pro choice like the media wanted to brainwash us all but then I had a girlfriend who I lived with for a while and she was suicidal because she had an abortion and then a miscarriage and now I really think they're not looking out for women at all. They just keep pushing and pushing abortions on women and lying more and more. I'm not anti abortion but I'm anti planned Parenthood and I don't see why we have to have abortion quotas and subsidize it. I was premature and sickly myself with all sorts of health problems when I was young and I can even remember almost dying a couple times in the hospital so I'm really not against aborting fetuses like that cause I'm not gonna lie, that's a rough life and having gone through it myself I would never want my kid to be born if he had to go through it too.
      But I'm against subsidized abortions for purely economic reasons because I know there's at least one person I knew personally who felt like she was talked into it and regretted it ever since.

    My wife and I watched Red State on VOD - we liked it. The ending was the biggest letdown, until we realized what he did there, not only for budgetary constraints, but for filmmaking; there wasn't a happy ending, this was a realistic depiction of how such a thing could go down, and we accepted it as him growing as a filmmaker.
    As a fan, I'm happy that he does movies for himself, because he doesn't have to do these movies, his podcasts and live shows make him a lot of money, as do his directorial credits, like the Flash and Supergirl. He just hasn't seen movies like the ones he is making.
    And besides, at least Harley Quinn Smith didn't ruin a trilogy franchise like Sophia Coppola did in "Godfather III."

I thought it was some cheap semi-professional directorial debut, but then I found out it was made by Kevin Smith and I just felt this sinking disappointment come over me. His previous flops were at least trying to achieve something, but here he just didn't give the slightest shit. Smith seems like an amazing guy in person, but I'll make sure to stay away from any of his future projects.
