Be careful what you ask for. Internal conflicts between GM'S AND HC's have ruined many NFL teams AND there is no Owner to over rule disputes.....and this is already messy.
Winning 9 games next year sounds good at first, but then you remember that we are USC and this is Riley's 4th season. If we don't make the playoffs, I'm out on him. We've been getting worse, not better, the last few years.
They haven’t been getting worse, his playcalling was the exact same this year as it was last year, the only difference on offense was that they didn’t have caleb williams this year, hiring d’anton lynn improved their defense drastically, and if we’re talking about next year, they won’t be good enough to win the big ten, it would be nice to see them get one of those last playoff spots, but if they finish next year 10-2 yet a 9-3 sec team somehow makes the playoffs over them next year, then that’s no reason to give up on riley
I don't know about players wanting to go to a school because they can be coached by pro coaches anymore. Seems like it's more about the money unfortunately. Teams like Oregon and Ohio state have payrolls over 20 million.
Gabe, agree with you that Jen Cohen is trying to save LR from his own errors. I am 100% sure that she pushed LR to change his Defensive coaching staff and now agree that she is trying to up the ante in NIL with a new GM.
I agree with you Gabe. The run game needs to be featured first and foremost. At Oklahoma LR actually ran the ball at a much higher clip. It was Caleb that made it easier to get away from the run game given his unique skill set. Look for Lincoln Riley to finally get back to the run to set up more play action. I think the sheer number of RB’s we’ve added is a clear tell that we can expect a strong power run game.
We need J'Onre Reed and atleast one more starter for the offensive line. Losing Pregnon has hurt us. Right now that position group is the weak link on the team. I would look at adding two more players there who could start for us. A center and a guard/tackle.
I dont think we really know whether some of the younger players on the o-line - Banuelos, Tuaunuu, Treter, Raymond and others are capable of stepping up as starters. Raymond and Tuaunuu looked pretty good in the bowl game. Only the coaches know. Keep in mind, if Hennie creates a truly elite d-line, the o-line will be practicing against a d-line that is better than most opponents. That makes a big difference. Fans overrate the shiny new thin in the portal, particularly on o-line. We haven't had much success with one and done players on the o-line. But I am not sure if Killian has the size to be our center. Wish he was 330 because he has the mental ability.
Hope your right about Lincoln running the football more. I’ll believe it when I see it. I really don’t think we need another running back. We’re going to loose someone in the portal! Good video Gabe!
Love the show . You are one of the few who tell it like it is . I sometimes get tired of other podcasters that sunshine pump to much and get upset when you call them on it . These untrained eyes . As one of the comments here said we the fans see whet to do but Riley doesn’t agree lol . To me I have been an SC fan for 50 years and want Riley to succeed. But what I have seen , is at times mind boggling . From terrible play calling , terrible time management, bad player evaluation, late in making decisions , not recruiting CA HS players and his stubborn control freak BS press conferences . Let’s hope , maybe a new GM can bring some semblance to the team with common sense . Loosing some of our good players to the portal is mad especially the Eman - you mean you’re not going to pay an extra $150k to keep him but you are going to pay HS Stewart $2mil . It is madness . So let’s see what happens when we get a proper GM if he can save Riley from Riley . Thanks again for your honest reporting it beats some of other podcasters who say don’t believe your lying eyes or untrained eyes lol
I think they are picking Carroll as GM “he’s the only one that fits and if I’m not mistaken he’s already on campus doing something else. He picked great talent “granted he had sark and kiffin back in the day helping recruiting”. Carroll used an OC so it would make sense to push for that with Lincoln. Just attaching carrolls name would be enough to help recruiting.
I am totally in agreement with you Gabe. We should run the ball at least 40 times and pass 22-25 times per game. I believe this O line will be able to run block and we have the running backs to control the ground game !!!Fight On!
If the CFP playoffs teams (Texas, Penn State, ND) and certain NFL teams (Lions, Bills) have taught me anything this year it’s that having a core of 2-3 running backs is crucial for longevity. Not only for the players but in keeping the play calling unpredictable on offense. Throw in some Kyle Shanahan style play action, RPOs etc and we have the potential for an extremely explosive offense that can stay CONSISTENT. Consistency=possession of the ball, explosiveness= scoring, all equaling to winning more games. It really is do or die for Lincoln Riley next season. Keep the faith tho boys ✌️
Sounds like that NFL Exec Consultant has been a catalyst & had an effect where things have sped up. Like the clarity on NIL money allocation (cause & effect on departures). Like Jen Cohen treating this as a new NFL type ERA at our Great University. Things are looking up.
Gabe, thanks for the update as usual. I’ve been saying for the longest USC needs a good GM. And I don’t trust the coach having one of his friends from the Mike Leach tree as the GM. Especially after you go 7-5 and 6-6 during the regular season. This is SC, we require a top notch GM, and I do believe Jennifer Cohen has seen what at good GM looks like from her time at Washington. I’ve also seen fans saying that the coach has nothing to do with NIL. That’s false. The head coach can have a lot of influence on fundraising and has to approve personnel descisions (like who we spend our money on). I also heard Brian Kelly donated $1M to LSU. Hmmm…
Is the GM in charge of generating NIL money too? We will continue to lose out on players in our backyard if we aren’t offering what contending teams do. Ohio State and Oregon are at least spending 30M a season on their team and SC isn’t at that level obviously
Next year the strength of this team will be the defense. Yes, the offense was not great this year, but with a much better defense, we could have been 10-2 or better this past season, even with the limitations of the offense. Look at the Notre Dame and Penn State games. Our offense wasn't consistent, but we scored more points against those defenses than other teams. Our defense was at best mediocre against those teams. The offense all depends upon the o-line and so it all comes down to the o-line coaching. There is plenty of talent on the roster - even without Pregnon - Paige, Noa, Raymond, Tauunuu, Treter, Banuelos - that can step up. Maybe we just need a center. The problems at tackle through the first half of the season are the reason Miller Moss started to deteriorate as a player and the reason the offense was dysfunctional. Focusing on the right receivers, having a solid o-line for the running game - that is all we need to have an effective offense. USC isn't as far away as many believe.
What is latest news on Pregnon? Is it possible that he stays, and the first order of business with this new GM would be to meet his price and keep him on the club. It sounds similar to what happened a year ago with Bear Alexander. He was going to leave and then all of a sudden he changed his mind. No doubt money was involved to keep him at USC.
Well if we’re going to run the Hell out of the football as was stated, keeping E-man should be a top priority, not only is there no replacement for him as an individual the combination with Payne had the potential to give us one of the best left sides in all of college football. I’m not too bothered by most of our offensive deflections- the WRs were overrated and getting in the way of Lemon and Lane, Joyner was overpriced, Murphy had to be replaced, etc but losing Pregnon is a terrible blow Full Stop
Bear was an underachieving quitter at Georgia and USC. On the other hand E-man has worked his arse off, gotten better every year, from a HS nobody to Wyoming to USC to 2nd team All Conference in the best conference in America. What a silly comparison. We’ll break the bank for a High Schooler (Stewart) that’s barely even played ball but we won’t pony up for one of the best returning Guards in all of college football, one who we flat out can not replace.
I’m not happy about CLR refusing to pound the rock when it’s working well nor his refusal to dump Grinch earlier. However, with all the issues the portal and NIL have brought, plus moving to the B1G, I am willing to cut him a little more slack than some of you. With his buy out, firing CLR if 2025 doesn’t improve dramatically, is probably unlikely. Our defense was much improved and I really think we will adjust our style of play now that we know holding and pass interference are not a part of the B1G officiating playbook. Fight on! ✌🏻
I'm not sure this makes sense to me. Riley has had total control all along? Why would SC bring in a bunch high star players, and even sign some of them, if Riley wasn't willing to pay them? And why would he care about saving money? I would think all he would care about is getting the best players and winning games. I don't get it, at all.
Gabe, I'm GLAD that someone else (ie. you) has finally said it. *_"We need a big infusion of talent on this roster."_* Glaring needs are offensive line and linebacker. Maybe 1-2 more top quality men on the defensive line. We don't need to worry about getting more skill guys, unless they absolutely elite.

Gads, why not find a capable person from the Ram/Chargers who's familiar with this market as a GM? Pete Carroll maybe? RE the RB, OJ went to a JC before SC.
Can you elaborate on your criticism saying Riley is a bad talent evaluator? Ignoring the obvious that he's trash w/ defense, how is he bad on offensive talent? I think you're absolutely conflating the role of a GM here. At the end of the day, we just need way more $ / legit NIL. You can have greatest GM, but, if we're still $10+mill behind schools like Ohio St., Oregon, etc. it won't matter. Boise State HC literally just touched on that on how his players are being poached b/c they're getting outbid by 2-10x what they're offering. These HS & college kids are becoming much more solely money driven. No GM will change that no matter how great they are. I took that article & got excited b/c that to me hopefully signals we're finally getting someone who'll up our NIL by a ton. And to be clear, not saying a talented GM can't help build out a better team by knowing where & how to spend. But my point being, none of that matters unless USC is willing to pony up the big money like the other programs.
Get the center!! As far as LR, I think he's doing much better than fans was to believe. He doesn't need ultimatum's to. get this program working. I expect progress in the win column next season but he has things moving in the right direction. This is a big ship to turn around and get it winning on a consistent basis given the rapidly changing landscape of collegiate sports. The guy needs a little faith in him and some trust. Not the incessant background carping so prevalent in media. Just ny opinion.
Riley has only EVER proved that he knows offense. The guy was given a stacked Oklahoma team!!! D’anton Lynn will be gone next year or the year after unless there’s a deal for Lincoln to leave in two years and D’anton gets the keys to USC! Bring in a big GM??? Who gives a damn, players now only look at money. I don’t blame the players for the money search! Most of them won’t make Sunday’s. But, there’s a few that are good enough but are not refined yet. Those are the ones the system is cheating, some of these guys go from team to team because they’re not getting the snaps. In the old days, you picked a school, if you were being left behind, you worked harder to be that guy. That effort put many into the NFL. Today, they just transfer 3 times then hit the street! Life time USC guy here! Lincoln needs to go coach offense in the NFL! The USC NIL managers are IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!
Update: Reed is NOT visiting today but remains a priority target for Coach Hanson

Gabe, LR is not the best offensive mind in college football. I’m stunned to still cling to that narrative.

How do you the money is there?
Gabe, you already said it. Riley s hard headed and thinks he knows all. A GM at SC? Riley won’t listen to him. Riley has to go, plain and simple.
We need LR to go back to TAILBACK U! Student Body right.
TAKE THE POWER FROM RILEY PERIOD!
