  • In week 1 of the 2002 NFL season, the FOX affiliate in Orlando, WOFL FOX 35, decided not to show the hometown Miami Dolphins take on the Detroit Lions, and instead, opted for some bizarre reason to show the game between the... Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins?

Not only this was Steve Spurrier’s NFL head coaching debut, not that this applies, the Arizona/Washington game was Pat Summerall’s first regular season game without his previous partner John Madden who had went to ABC to join Monday Night Football. In what universe is Virginia Commanders Country? It's been almost 20 years of failure for the franchise since I left Virginia, and it wasn't a strong market for the team before that happened. Even back in 2005, Virginia was Cowboys or Steelers Country, to the point where the running joke about people from Virginia was that we don't actually like the local sports teams. At best, the Commanders are fighting the Packers for third in Virginia.

This is very similar to what happened in Spokane in 1991 with the NBC affiliate & the Seattle Sonics of the NBA. At the time the Sonics dominated the state of Washington when it came to popularity thanks to players like Shawn Kemp & Gary Payton. However instead of airing Game 2 of an opening round playoff series between the Sonics & the Blazers, the NBC affiliate decided to show Game 2 of the Jazz-Suns series even though like this they were under no contractual obligation to do so. The reasoning behind this was John Stockton who went to Gonzaga & was considered a local basketball legend. This meant that the only way you could watch Sonics-Blazers was through the Sonics PPV service that was available in the state of Washington or listen to the game on the radio. As for how both games turned out both were blowouts with Blazers largely dominating the Sonics in a 115-106 win & the Jazz losing to the Suns 112-102.

However, I remember a situation in that DMA that was even more egregious. In Week 1 of the 2015 season, the Titans visted the Bucs in CBS' late doubleheader window with no Fins or Jaguars conflict. The Titans (Marcus Mariota) and Bucs (Jameis Winston) drafted QBs that year who would start in that game. WKMG, the CBS affiliate, hired a new program director and it was crystal clear that he had no idea how NFL fandom works over there. In his infinite wisdom, he chose Ravens/Broncos instead and there was plenty of outrage about that.

Can’t compare Caleb Williams to Steve Spurrier, c’mon. Apples and oranges . And Jimmy Johnson was coach of Dallas before Dolphins, so your comparison about him is invalid. As a die hard Gator and Dolphin fan who lived in Tampa for almost 20 years and remembers this Detroit game vividly as Ricky had a huge day, I can say I’d rather watch the actual Dolphin game than Spurriers first game with another team, even a pro debut, but I can promise you that in Orlando in particular it is much more heavily favored in the Gators over the Dolphins. Orlando and Miami don’t like their basketball teams, there isn’t a lot of Miami love in Orlando, I’m not sure where you’re getting your info from. Anyways decent video, trip down memory lane. Go Gators Go Phins

And it would be a couple years before NFL red zone launches when terms like Witching Hour, quad box and Scott Hansen happen. I also get the Lions were coming off a 2-14 season but it's the debut of Joey Harrington and also it's Ricky Williams' first dolphins game.

The Lions only did one game better in 2002, and fired their coach after winning only five games in two seasons. Actually the Lions were originally going to keep Mornhinweg, but when Steve Mariucci was fired by the Niners after their playoff exit, the Lions immediately fired Mornhinweg, then a few days later hired Mariucci, violating NFL rules in the hiring process.

Miami was the first NFL team in Florida, so a lot of older folks stuck with the Dolphins not to mention the Bucs were awful for most of their existence before Dungy got there in 1996 and Miami was usually a perennial playoff contender, it happened here in Jacksonville too, many people here kept their allegiance to the Dolphins

Also not mentioned in this 2002 season opener was historic for another reason. The first major league wide divisional realignment since the merger. With Houston joining as an new expansion team. And the creation of the new “South” Division in both conferences as well.

IMO it could have been mentioned in a quick few seconds even in this Orlando/Dolphins TV coverage mess as it was that important. Plus the Lions was playing their 1st ever game as members of the new NFC North.

Also, I'm with Stan Knott on this one. This is not the same thing as ignoring the local team. Spurrier made the most sense to show in Orlando, which has no home team and would be more likely to follow Spurrier to the NFL. The Oklahoma analogy doesn't work either. A better analogy would be if Bob Stoops got hired by the Seahawks and Fox had to choose between them and the Cowboys. I think Oklahoma fans in that scenario would prefer watching the Seahawks.

I can actually kind of understand the decision here. Unlike the examples you used here involving NFL quarterbacks and coaches jumping to a different team that would be a competitor to their previous team's fans, Florida is a college team and thus Gator fans could easily root for UF on Saturday and Washington on Sunday if they weren't deeply attached to any NFL team. The future Commanders weren't going to be a threat to Florida in the BCS picture that season.
Also, while there are plenty of Dolphin fans particularly on the Space Coast in the Orlando market, Orlando is not a secondary Dolphin market. It is however a secondary market for both the Bucs (an NFC team usually on FOX) and the Jags (an AFC team usually on CBS). Since Flagler County is in the Orlando market and within 75 miles of Jacksonville, if the Jaguars and Dolphins were playing at the same time then the Orlando CBS affiliate had to show the Jaguars even if more people were interested in the Dolphins (unless the Jags were blacked out at home as happened somewhat frequently back then). As such, despite the historical reasons for Dolphin support there shouldn't have been any expectation in the Orlando area that the Dolphins would be on TV as they wouldn't be on most weeks.

I always love your content and opinions, but I have to disagree with you 100% on this instance. While I'm a Floridian (via Ohio-Who-Dey), I just don't get how people just assume everyone in Florida is a Dolphin fan. Sure in the Metro-Dade area, I get it. On the other hand, Orlando is closer to Jacksonville and Tampa. Assuming Orlando is Dolphins country is kind of a stretch. Heck, that assumption for years even stretched to where I live in Panama City. Trust me, it was a huge assumption to consider Panama City a "secondary market for the Dolphins. There are more Cowboys, Steelers, Browns and Bengal fans in Panama City than Dolphin fans. The entire State of Florida hasn't been Dolphin country for 45 years. I don't buy the "local" team bias argument. Also, this was WOFL-- a Fox affiliate. Remember, Fox just got the NFL rights a few years earlier and being the home of the NFC, I seriously doubt if that channel marketed towards the Dolphins. Had it been the CBS affiliate with a long history of being with the NFC and just now having AFC games, I could see them airing the Dolphins game, but for WOFL, I can see their logic. Finally, I just don't buy the "outrage" factor given the fact Sunday Ticket was available and almost every food establishment aired all games (unless blacked out-- but not a problem in Orlando). Granted, I'm not a fan of the Dolphins, so the whole issue would be a non-factor. For me, each station should decide which games to air based on match-ups and not geographical location unless it is the actual team city's local affiliate.
