Mason jars are only hermetically closed if something hot (water, jam or whatever hot) is poured into it, because thats how the lid is designed. Obviously you will not make a boling ecosphere haha so thats a big NO for mason jars. I sugges you try FIDO jars, they are 100% sealed when the lid is closed. I did recently a project on my channel and the ecosphere is thriving with life and after 2 months water is crystal clear.

Tre Rubinsy I was thinking the same thing! It’s illegal to transport live animals away from the lake near my house because they might be carrying VHS (a disease that causes internal bleeding in fish). The thought of that getting into my tanks is enough to scare me away from collecting any local plants, rocks or anything.

ive kept many enclosed ecospheres before, and in my experience you have to allow a decent amount of space for air at the top! if its all or mostly water it seems to go anaerobic pretty quick and you end up with a jar of sludge, lol

I have also learned that making ecospheres, wish I knew it when I Started. Even though my first Terrarium/ecosphere was an ecosphere and I did leave a bit of air on the top. It's thriving to this day, but I did do it to many other ecospheres and learned not to that way. And now I think an air pocket at the top makes it look a bit better too.

As someone that does canning, the type of jar/lid you use does not cause fermentation or pickling, that is caused by the contents you put in and processing of the jar. The one way air vacuum is only done when you do the heat treating process, and only if you finger tighten the ring so that when boiled, there is enough resistance to cause a seal, but let the steam out of the jar, then once cooled the vacuum starts, you may hear the lid pop, and you can then finish tightening the ring if you wish, or remove it all together. If you fully tighten the ring prior to cooking the jars, you will cut off all air and risk the jar actually exploding, but the coating itself is not an oxygen absorption/filtering material, else that would be kinda scary to boil your food with :|
Fermentation can also cause jars to explode when the ring is tightened too much, and so most people that practice mason jar fermentation use special air-lock lids or kits, so air exchange/leaking was not your problem.
The only reason I can imagine mason jars cause failed ecospheres is if the metal lid could be copper lined, but any namebrand canning lids should be coated with a non reactive material because what people mostly jar is acidic foods (you generally need a minimum amount of acid for proper food safety anyway when canning,) and they react poorly with copper and aluminum. And in your case, it could either have been a cheap lid, or the fact you pointed out about not enough light. I'm betting on a cheap lid by how discolored the saltwater turned out, reacting with the copper, which I have seen first hand as I too live near the ocean and collected salt water in the past to have it go black like that.
Your latch style mason uses a silicone/rubber seal, which obviously has no metal involved for the internal contents, it is also a much larger vessal, which we all know is better when it comes to aquatic life in all situations. Hope little Sven is doing well! (I also take it none of her eggs survived as your last update did not state an explosion of shrimplits.)

Just so you know, I've been binge watching your videos ever since I stumbled upon them; I got a beta recently, and even if I tried to prepare a nice tank for him (10 liters and dechlo water) I've realised that many things were wrong (no filter, no plants, no led, and your average disgustang blue pebbles).
Today I couldn't bear it any more, and I went to buy a new decent home to my little friend (his name's Pumukli if you're curious enough).
It wasn't easy, but I managed to create a nice little home for him; filter, led, substrate, plants, stones,... now I just have to wait for it to cycle properly.
Can't wait to move my fish in here, he's gonna love it.

I've watched a number of vids on closed ecospheres. I believe they would all work better if there were simply more air and less water. The success of any system depends on its creating an equilibrium. More air, maybe as much as 1/4 to 1/3 of the volume, just might do the trick.

You can buy plastic lids for mason jars that don't let air out. ON another note, I bought one of those 'BioSphere's in 2013 that had 4 shrimp, now almost 8 years later, 1 is still alive, he's been the sole survivor for 4-5 years. I sometimes feel bad that the poor guy is all by himself, do shrimp get lonely!?

I have never canned food, but I don't think mason jars force out gas without external heat & pressure. More like, all the oxygen is used up (as with pickles- anaerobic respiration! Mmm, pickles!)

I would love to see you do another Saltwater Ecosphere.... but try not to bury any marine algae in the substrate as it causes the automatic rot of the Algae, releasing the Iodine solution in the water giving it a blue or purple apearance

  • @lorez201
    @lorez201 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Ok I know this was two years ago but the ecosystems didn't collapse because you used mason jars, those don't just automatically 'pickle' things by virtue of being commonly used for pickling lmao. They don't selectively expel oxygen like a one-way valve, that's not how those seals work and that's not how pickling works. The problem was that those jars were both sealed with excess amounts of living organic matter (seaweed, plants, etc.) in them relative to their volumes. The seaweed, etc. wasn't going to live forever in an environment that didn't suit it, and when it died, all the nutrients stored in its tissues were released into the water and the system became eutrophic and oxygen was depleted as microbes consumed the organic nutrients. After that, it was only hospitable to bacteria and archaea. Sealed ecospheres will usually stabilize more readily when they're loaded with relatively oligotrophic environments. Just seal them with clear water and some sediment, and let any incidental autotrophs (algae, plants, etc.) build up their populations to suit the environment. If you really want to deliberately include moss, algae, w/e, add the smallest viable pieces possible. Making them oligotrophic will also eliminate the need for a dedicated light, since oversupplying light can cause algae to overpopulate and lead to another crash.

Do you think that organisms in both fresh and salt water are older in evolution? (Like they evolved earlier than some species)

Hey I was wondering I have a 5.5 gallon betta tank and was wondering if I could maybe put 10 cherry shrimp or ghost shrimp in there I don’t want to be over stocked but I just want to have a clean up crew that will be fun to watch and will eat algae maybe even keep my veil tail betta company and I want to keep them from breeding so they don’t over run because I have no other aquariums to put them in thanks have a great day :)
