And after this, Germany got to the final a year later and progressed further than England in every single world cup, got to a Euro final in 2008, beat England 4-1 in the world cup 2010 last 16 and won the 2014 world cup defeating host nation Brazil 7-1 along the way. I think it's safe to say Germany done more than just caught up.
that 2002 team was pretty terrible though. in 2004, they finished bottom of their group in the euros. it wasn't until 2006 or 2008 that they started their upward curve.
izdatsumcp They weren't terrible. They beat Saudi Arabia 8-0 in that world cup. Saudi Arabia were ranked 34 in the world, not 203 like San Marino. It was an impressive result and don't deny it. And they beat some tricky teams to get to the final. USA, South Korea and Paraguay. These weren't walkover teams. England constantly slip up against smaller teams.
rightly said , all due to setup provided by Klinshmann and masterclass tactics by Joachim Loew . Both have great contributions for their resctructure !! On the other hand FA is a joke of an organisation , pathetic decison making , gave Mclaren the job , sacked Capello , brought ROy Hodsgon over Harry Redknapp !! WOwwww !! It is becasue of FA that england are now so behind Germany even after leading in 02 period !!
We had a UK Olympic team and it was 3rd after the giants USA and China. (2nd if was by gold medals only ) If we had a British team, it would be different. Look at the glory days of Liverpool, Forest, Leeds, Villa.. Apart from Grobalaar, I think all the players were from the UK. Now, the English are a minority in their own teams, and you have milionaire divas who come for 2 or 3 seasons, can't speak English and you can't pronounce their name and don't know where they come from. It's all about money now, buying divas instead of putting money into the youth and giving them a chance to play. There was an Arsenal team in the CL Cup, and there was not one British player in the team. If Arsenal had won the cup, could you have said an English team won? (The managers of the "big" teams are also non-Brits...even we had 2 foreigners as England managers . It was ok when Dalglish, Rush, McQueen, Robertson, Gemmil, Hansen, Bremner etc scored for Liverpool or Forest. No, that 5-1 was a one off. The only two other games I saw them play well was the 1990 WC semi-final against Germany, and the EC1996 4-1 over Holland. But when you see that "small" Greece or Denmark have won championships and Holland, except for this EC, Holland have always played attractive football. No, if there was one National European League, England would be midfield in the 2nd Division. I think the game against Iceland proved it...and the reason they lost was not bad luck.
Mike Rourke "CL Cup"....Arsenal fielded an entire starting line-up and bench full of overseas players for a PL game in 2005....not long earlier if an English team fielded some English and a lot of British and hardly any overseas the commentator would still make a comment something like "only 4 Englishmen in the starting lineup" even if the majority were still homegrown but for this game Arsenal didn't have any English or British or even a single Irishman sitting on the bench (RepOfIreland isn't classed as British but is still much more local than the players Wenger were playing). Also they spent a lot of their ChampionsLeague run to the final in 2006 playing no English players and only having a very young Walcott on the bench as an unused sub every time as he was never going to play for them that season and he was their only English or British player on the squad sheet (probably sitting there just so they weren't criticised as much as they were for the PL game in the previous season but effectively it was just as bad) and they beat RMadrid away to become the first "English team" to beat them at their ground which is a fake achievement as no English players were involved. In the final they improved massively playing a whopping 2 English and the rest overseas players.
As an Englishman let me say this - These are the problems with English football - the same problem we've had *for over 40 years*. Nothing has changed much since then including the all too predictable results.- 1) Producing performances like this once every 10 or 20 years and thinking "that's enough to beat the world". It isn't. You have to produce performances like this consistently when it really matters - as the likes of Italy, Germany, Spain and Italy all do in the World Cups and the Euros. England has not beaten any of them on the field at the Quarter Final, Semi Final or. Final stage at a World Cup since 1966 (and that was with Home advantage). Germany, Italy and all have their disasters and recover - England don't - in this case Germany reached the final in 2002. A case in point. 2) The belief "we're the best in the world" when in reality England is about 7th or 8th best - and has been that since the 50's. Results at the sharp end of tournaments (the knockout stages) have proven that to be the case. 3) Outdated tactics and strategy which are light years behind the top 4-6 nations. Again this has been a problem since 1970. 4) Mental weakness - not showing up to play or "freezing" with fear when facing the very best - examples Germany 1982 World Cup, Argentina 1986 World Cup, Germany 1990 World Cup, Brazil 2002 World Cup, Portugal 2006 World Cup, Germany 2010 World Cup, Portugal 2000 Euros, France 2004 Euros, Italy 2012 Euros.... 5) Excuse making - it's too hot, too much altitude, we're tired, etc. Well, the other nations weren't. They never are. 6) An attitude that "we're England and that's enough". It isn't. Despite the attitude that "teams fear England" and will just roll over they won't. Teams like Spain, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Holland and the like are technically and tactically superior and don't "fear England". They know you have to turn up on the day and execute. Nothing will change in Brazil come 2014. England will do moderately well or "just OK" as they always do and think "that's enough". The other top nations are real contenders and won't. Germany faced facts ten years ago, changed and are reaping the benefits - while England stood still (again). That is the difference between England and the other nations and nothing will change until the facts are faced honestly - which no one in England is willing to do. Thus English football is doomed to underachieve for another 40-50 years......staying firmly in the second division of world football.
It is a pity that I can only give one thumb up. No understanding that you only got 19 thumbs. That's one of the best recent comments I've had the pleasure of reading.
When Germany beat Brazil 7:1 in the 2014 semi final, they shot more goals within 70 minutes then England in their last two World Cup campaigns combined. Other then often mentioned in British Media, Germany started to restructure the German football system a year before this loss. It did not have any other consequences at all. If England wants to win anything, they need Russian referees. It worked in 1966.
Exactly. And the English public, fans and the media were not giving them credit for getting through to the quarter-final at least instead of getting carried away into the final
exactly! they used to be much better team over 15 years ago, playing fearlessly against the world-class teams. it's just that the local media, fans and the public still fail to see that.
bob bobder if if if and then if not to mention if. What counts is on the pitch. And there England shows in every single tournament, no matter against whom they have to play ... they can't go past a certain point.
This is why England cannot get their shit together at tournaments. They win a qualifying match 5-1 and expect to be treated like world champions. Germany beat Brazil 7-1 in the world cup semi finals and their response was "we haven't won anything yet". Germany, even with weak teams, injury crises or whatever circumstance, still manage to make it to the semi-finals at the last 4 world cups while England's exits at the world cup are getting progressively more embarrassing.
That is so true, i remember the aftermath very well, we won that game and everyone expected us to be world champions, all the work was done, well it wasn't there was still the world cup still to go (where Germany actually got to the final and we got eliminated, early as usual, although I will say that the German team at that time were not brilliant and didn't have tough opposition until they got to that final, when that Brazil team at the time who were world class at that time, won pretty easily), but that's the difference, the German F.A reliased things needed to change in German football from grass roots to the professional level, where in England we constantly get knocked out early in international events, but the English F.A hardly change anything.
Paddy said that he was sure England would win a world cup. Its so sad to think that they never got past a quarter final and Germany actually reached the final the next year
Fantastic upload mate, nice one. Interesting, and to be fair I don't think they were that wrong really - the World Cup in 2002 was very unlucky for Ericsson. Beckham injured, Gerrard and Neville out, and Owen carrying a knock the entire tournament. Sadly, in hindsight, this result benefitted Germany far more than us. It made them see their failings, and made us believe that we were set for a golden age.
And since then Germany has overhauled their entire system, made it to AT LEAST the semifinals in EVERY major tournament since 2006 and won a World Cup with a team that had many injuries to key players. Average age is under 25 and the next generation looks to be better than the previous one. Talk about a turn around, meanwhile same old same old for England the only difference now is that they're the whipping boys of Europe lol
Maybe not whipping boys, but England are certainly the punchline of Europe and world football too lol. Yeah, those are friendlies, the only people that read in to friendly results are the English. England beat Germany in a friendly and they went mental with delusions that they were title contenders. Meanwhile Germany and the rest of the world knew it was a friendly and went on assuming England would choke at the tournament, like they usually do. Now the English are saying their team was too young, when Germany's team was just as young and has been the youngest or second youngest at every tournament since 2010 and they made it to the semifinal. Typical England
chanman4rings I don't think anyone in England said we could win anything? Funny you seem to know a lot about England who do you support and where are you from? I don't read into Friendly results I'm telling you every dog has its day, as for punchline in Europe what does that even mean? then you over exaggerate again by saying World... hilarious. The English are saying their team is too young... where? how many of the 50m English people said that? I'm not arguing with you that England were bad, but you make up so much bullshit talking like you know what everyone in England thinks so that makes me think you're a bit of a bellend. The media in England are worse than anyone, but ask an actual Englishman what they rate their chances are, and most will say no chance. You seem to get all your information from journalists and the rags... You should stop addressing everything as 'the English' talking like what you're saying is the statement of a nation, when it isn't. The saying Typical England by the way is probably said more by England's own fans than anyone else. P.S. the person who made the statement in this video isn't even English...
Funny video. Even when Germany is "behind" England, they make it into a WC final (2002). Seemingly being "ahead" is open to interpretation, the English one is certainly most entertaining.
So, as always, "bad luck". Let me put it that way: England is the most overrated football nation in Europa. Won the cup ONCE in 1966 at HOME, scoring a goal that was no goal and never ever appeared on any trophy sheet afterwards. Never. For some unknown reason England has been traded as competing candidates in every WC or EC (apart from the last), never ever showing even the slightest ability to actually get pas a quarterfinal. And coming back to that video: they win ONCE against probably the worst German side in 40 years and they rave about world domination already, again. Maybe that is the major problem of UK football. Unfounded pride, lacking potential.
No England have not performed at all recently although this team did have potential to do better than they did. May I ask what makes you so passionate about this anyway lol i'm guessing your not English
And then after Germany 1, England 5 in 2001... Germany in major tournaments: 8 Top 4 Finishes, 3 Finals appearances and 1 title (2014 FIFA World Cup) England in major tournaments: 0 Top 4 Finishes, 0 Finals appearances and 0 titles. England's Three Lions: snakebitten since 1966, all-roar, no bite.
The England team from 2001 - 2006 was insane, they had so many world class players and they had a real shot at winning the world cup in 2002 and 2006. It's really sad that group of players so underachieved. Owen, Gerrard, Beckham, Seaman, Cole, Scholes, so many great players. I really shouldn't be saying this as a Welshman but they really did underachieve.
10:55 Germany since then: Reached 3 finals, won one of them, reached the semis 6 times *in a row* and are always title contenders England: Only got to the Semis once, quarterfinals 5 times, losing 4 of them, 3 of them on penalties, didn't even qualify for 2008 and played Shite in 2014 and 2016, going out at the group stage in 14 and losing to Iceland in the round of 16 and Aren't really title contenders. Summary: England are now behind, waaaay behind
Fans and journalists always get carried away. I remember when Bayern lost BATE Borisov in the Champions League and many didn't give them a chance to lift the trophy. Next thing you know, they smash Juventus and Barcelona and the same people considered them the best team in the world. Perspective is everything.
England are a king of friendlies and qualifiers , that was the golden generation of england , there they beat Germany , not a big deal , couldn't achieve any trophy that time still !!!! ridiculous !!!!
thx for the upload, very interesting watch. Seems amazing now to see journalists having so much faith in the national side, the difference in optimism between then and now is stark.
England have really improved since their disaster defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016. I'd say that was like Germany's Euro 2000 moment (plus this 5-1 defeat)
That is one of only two truly great England performances that I have seen in a competitive match in my lifetime. The other match being England's 4-1 win over Holland in Euro 96.
Andy murday yes mate me too Euro 96 was great even the performance against Germany in semi final was good . I thought World Cup 98 was not bad either unlucky against Argentina . But after this performance and his era it has got awful . Euro 16 was an embarrassment
2002 Argentina win , 04 unfortunate France loss, against Portu 04 and 06 , both the occasions !! these were some good england performances .. Sven has been our best manager after 2000s , I expext Southgate to be very good , even Loew had awful club record before Germany roles as assistant manager . Southgate looks tactically good manager and doesn't looks running out of ideas .
Always easy to laugh 13 years later. England are a fine football country. And we had our troubles those years. But come on.... Bayern won the CL in 2001, we had Kahn, Ballack,Bierhoff and so on. And we are and were at the time Germany. "They cant catch up." "England will win a world cup" The guy in the middle is a hater and an idiot. And the right one isnt great either. "Deisler Diesler whatever" Class... The current German generation at the time closed their careers with a CL win, a Euro, a WC final and even a WC win(Klose!). And the new ones are WC winners CL winners, Euro runner ups and so on. Neither the English guys who played in those years or after are better or on that level(new German players). So I will close with this; Haha. ;)
germany wc 90, ec 96, cl 97 and 01 hahaha england!!!! fluke win 99; wc final 2002, cl final 2002, europa league final 2002, so they already catched them 8 months later
As a German born I must say that this game was a "friendly" where the German coach experimented with new, young players as a coach should do in a friendly game. We beat the English later on in World Cups in 2010 and in 2016. As usual, the English seem to forget the friendly game is to experiment with new lineups, new young players. The English made the biggest deal about it than the German team. Why don't you take a look at the German reaction to this game.
It's incredible during this period as Paddy says this is an arrogant nation it is true. During this time the Germans reached the 2002 World Cup final, 2006 World Cup 3rd place, 2008 finalists at the European Championships. From 2010 until now the rest is history. Any English fan would love to have that record from 2000 until 2010. It shows the sheer level of class.
I think your bang on, English players dont have a chance to develope because the prem teams have the money to buy from overseas, this stops the development of the English players, the quick fix buy is killing our home grown talent.
Was there mate. Saw the whole thing. Lived in Germany for twenty years so have witnessed their supporters behaviour close hand. One of the greatest days out in my life. So where were you sitting?
The Germans are smart asses. They lured the English into a comfort zone after that 5-1 and effectively made them overestimating themselves completely:-D Englands demise started with that 5-1.....and if England loses nowadays, hey we watch the DVD of that 5-1....and change nothing.
How about England are just far up their own arses to end up being knocked out in the QF as usual. They won 5-1 in a qualifying match, but when it's time to really deliver, it's all talk no show time and time again.
It WAS the worst German team ever! They only played well against Saudi Arabia and in the final. In all other matches they were so bad and without Oliver Kahn they would have been out in the Round of 16 or at the very maximum in the quarter finals.
Could not agree more with your comments. Also it was the story of Beckhams foot wasn't it.? Broken five weeks before the finals. This byglenn character looks like a troll. Done the same to my comments further down the page.
And how proud they must be to have not lost to Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Cameroon, Paraguay, USA or South Korea. Come on, let's be honest, has there ever been an easier route to the final?
This was a freak result, although as happy as I was to see it. But I remember thinking, that England didn't play fantastic on that day; just had 6 good attacks and happen to score 5 times. And what we're the punters saying? And to qualify straight through, it came down to a nervy draw against Greece. And as other comments pointed out, Germany got to the final in 2002. And since then, been very consistent in the tournaments (apart from 2004). And won WC last time round, thumping the hosts in the semi-final. Since 2002, it's been England that needed to catch up.
It's like sports journalists just cannot do impartial - ever. They are lauded as great writers but the shit they talk is often comparable to your average fan. How can anyone be that optimistic after a one off like this? Utterly incredible! I guess this is what it's like when some people believed the world was flat. No matter the evidence, they will always believe it is flat.
@whiskydancer ...we did indeed. ...but for a while, it was nice to ride on the crest of a wave of national furore. I also remeber the media going wild over a 3-2 england victory over the argentinians, in a friendly in Geneva, a 2005. So fickle... It will be interesting to see how the media react after england's victory against Spain in the friendly yesterday... Perhaps not with the same amount of hype, but there will be a heightened sense of expectancy.
"probably the worst German team I've ever seen" and they still go on to the World Cup Final the very next year. It's like they only turn it on when it really counts...
this team should have won the world cup 2002. They outplayed brazil for an hour and Heskey was brilliant, an injured Owen scored but they sat back on 1 goal andBrazil got lucky.
....and Germany reached the WC final one year later, and won it in 12, while they successfully reached every single major tournament semifinal since 06. Meanwhile, England was yet to win any trophy as they did not qualify for the Euros in 08 and got knocked out by minnows Iceland in Euro 2016.
Germany didn't "have to play Shevchenko's Ukraine" because of this England game. They had to play Ukraine because they didn't beat Finland in their last game (0-0). Had Germany beaten Finland on the last day they would have automatically qualified because England drew 2-2 with Greece (Beckham's free kick).
England still almost cocked it up against Greece in the last game. I think a win was required initially but Germany messed up their last match as well.
Despite all that has happened since, I still think that the England Football Team that played in 2001/02 was one of the best squads we've had in recent years. I remember before the England v Brazil Quarter-Final in the '02 World Cup, loads of people (myself included) were of the opinion that whoever won that match would win the World Cup. And guess what? Brazil went on to win their fifth World Cup. It's all been downhill for England since then, unfortunately.
They still had to do it though and the way they did it they deserved to be there. England supposedly had an easy route to at least the semis in 2010 but didnt get anywhere near
Went to the match and loved it. The Germans were so arrogant before the match, showing EVERY German victory against us on their scoreboard. Remember too, the game was played at the then home of Bayern Munich. All their supporters were given a huge silly hand to wear by the local TV station and they were supposed to wave them after every German goal. So much for that. First half quite interesting and a tense game. Then Gerrard just before and Owen directly after half time sealed it.
Dark times for German football back then between 1998 and 2004... everybody was beating them... Croatia sent the signals of the German demise beating Germany 3-0 at world cup in 1998. Then came friendlies against France and USA whom also beat Germany 3-0... Euro 2000 Portugal knocked them out 3-0. Then THERE was the disaster at Euro 2004.... Germany were lucky to reach the final in 2002... because they avoided the major nations...
Not much. Apart from major teams at that time just not showing up in 2002 (France, Portugal, etc.), whilst 2002 Germany was fairly unremarkable and had to rely on Ballack and Schneider for creativity (which was exposed in 2004 against Latvia), the rest of the team consisted of hard workers solid enough. Half the squad if not more competed in the CL finals of 2001 with Bayern and 2002 with Leverkusen. Not to rub it in, but it says a lot that this qualifier victory is still so much talked about.
This was one of the best things that happened to the German national team. After this match they realised that England were catching up, they had to do something, and that's what they did. Introducing Lowe and the massive restructure to the German national team, Ballack had the captaincy stripped and given to Lahm. Look how that turned out. Players like Neuer and Muller were bought into the fold umong others, look how that turned out...
Given England have massively improved, brought in more youth, have unity within the camp, I'd say the Iceland defeat was our equivalent to Germany's Euro 2000 and 5-1 defeat to England
England are a quarter final team. Brasil could have said that that they would have won by more or Germany should have beaten Brasil in the final, which they nearly did. England have lost 6 penalty shoot outs in World Cups and Euros since 1990 says it all
i recall the albania game, fowler did score and so did owen with a sweet volley from scholes' pass. i miss owen, i don't like rooney's arrogance and owen just always seemed to just get the job done. wha scares me on this is how they refer to 2006 as in the future, 6 years ago.
You can't judge the quality of a team on how lucky they are in penalty shootouts. That being said, I'd take England getting knocked out of the Quarter Finals of Brazil 2014 on penalties any day considering the way things are going right now. At the moment we don't even look certain to qualify.
The self regard and arrogance leaps out and hits you between the eyes. I hope England go out in the group stages in 2018. Only continual and repeated failure might change things. In fact FIFA and UEFA need to stop putting England into qualifying groups that my local pub team would have a chance of winning. At the moment England are being protected. We were never great but I think we might be about to be really embarrassed.
it doesn't count much more than a home qualifier, which they were annihialated. Look at the teams thy faced to get to the final, mostly average, the only good team they met was Brazil in the final, who knocked out England. If England had the same path, they would have been in the final as well
It's interesting to look back at this with the hindsight of how Germany and England developed their football as a whole. Germany had a wake up call, not from this game alone, but from how their national team performed in that era. England will never find international success without rebuilding the entire football foundation in the country. And, like Germany, it will take 10 years.
The German had to play Shevckenko's Ukraine in the last ditch qualifiers because of this, don't forget. If we had lost , and we were expected to certainly by the whole of Germany, we would have had to play Ukraine instead. So it was a very big game. First World Cup qualifier Germany have lost on home soil I believe.
LOL....Losing to Germans is an English tradition by now... Germany: Four WC titles, Eight finals, 12 semis, the only country besides Brazil to have appeared in three successive finals (82, 86, 90), produced two of the all time WC top scorers (Muller and Klose), inflicted the heaviest defeat on Brazil on their home soil, have had a podium spot in every decade WC football has been played... England: One WC title (highly questionable), two semis... Who needs to catch up with who???????????????????????
And after this, Germany got to the final a year later and progressed further than England in every single world cup, got to a Euro final in 2008, beat England 4-1 in the world cup 2010 last 16 and won the 2014 world cup defeating host nation Brazil 7-1 along the way.
I think it's safe to say Germany done more than just caught up.
that 2002 team was pretty terrible though. in 2004, they finished bottom of their group in the euros. it wasn't until 2006 or 2008 that they started their upward curve.

As an Englishman let me say this -
These are the problems with English football - the same problem we've had *for over 40 years*. Nothing has changed much since then including the all too predictable results.-

5) Excuse making - it's too hot, too much altitude, we're tired, etc. Well, the other nations weren't. They never are.
6) An attitude that "we're England and that's enough". It isn't. Despite the attitude that "teams fear England" and will just roll over they won't.
Agreed. Be interested to hear your opinion two years on.
Bravo, Very Good Analysis
That was an awesome analysis. Just hope that what Southgate is bringing in is a long term change in attitude and culture
That's a very good point you're making. 👏👏👏
@VeloVelo semi final in wc 2018 finalists in euro 2020
"England could become the best team in the world" wow what coffee had the one in the middle been drinking that morning!
After that result they were the best team in the world, you are only as good as your last result as they say.
Exactly. And the English public, fans and the media were not giving them credit for getting through to the quarter-final at least instead of getting carried away into the final
exactly! they used to be much better team over 15 years ago, playing fearlessly against the world-class teams. it's just that the local media, fans and the public still fail to see that.
You have more chances of getting a fart out of a rocking horse, than England becoming best team in the world!!!
Everyone saying how bad Germany were. The following year they were in the World Cup final and England didn't make it past the quarters.
Germany had a lot easier route to the finals. I believe England would have most likely progressed to the final if we played the teams Germany had.
bob bobder if if if and then if not to mention if. What counts is on the pitch. And there England shows in every single tournament, no matter against whom they have to play ... they can't go past a certain point.
+bob bobder
England would have found a way to mess it up. They always do.
Last man standing.
I think South Korea & USA would've troubled England a lot much more they did to Germany, and found a way past a fragile England.
Ahh, the English. Winning a measly qualifier and they start talking about they will dominate world football.
Correct.
+MW MW Good call.Too many overpaid EPL players with egos the size of the Titanic. They would be better trying out players from the tier below.
..... And 13 years on, Germany lift the World Cup.
... again
The anti-English BBC has fed poison since 1930s. Wankers.
Germany just won the Confed Cup 2017 and which that the team is on a run of 6 semis, 3 finals and 2 titles since 2006.
This video only gets better.
It is always hilarious to listen to English commentators getting all excited over nothing. Germany was terrible in 2002.
I think they caught up.
Are you sure?
And since then Germany has overhauled their entire system, made it to AT LEAST the semifinals in EVERY major tournament since 2006 and won a World Cup with a team that had many injuries to key players. Average age is under 25 and the next generation looks to be better than the previous one. Talk about a turn around, meanwhile same old same old for England the only difference now is that they're the whipping boys of Europe lol
+The Edge umm lost to Iceland
😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😄😄😄😄😄
gtaquizmaster Still not whipping boys of Europe... Spain lost to Slovakia so what's your point? Portugal lost to England and won Euro 2016...
"Long term, England are ahead of Germany, it's up to them to catch up, I don't think they can"... d'oh.
Funny video. Even when Germany is "behind" England, they make it into a WC final (2002). Seemingly being "ahead" is open to interpretation, the English one is certainly most entertaining.
That's only cause we happened to play Brazil earlier in the tournement than Germany
Oh, just passionate in general. And videos with pundits acting like this just aggrevate me (;
maximumhate666 Well i guess when they said Germany need to catch up they did do pretty quick lol
10:55 England are ahead of Germany and its now their duty to catch up and I dont think they can.
Watch what you are saying
And then after Germany 1, England 5 in 2001...
Germany in major tournaments: 8 Top 4 Finishes, 3 Finals appearances and 1 title (2014 FIFA World Cup)
England in major tournaments: 0 Top 4 Finishes, 0 Finals appearances and 0 titles.
All those english players smiling... thinking: "Wow I'm an immortal now"
This video sure didn't age well hahaha
still comedy gold :D
The tash on lawrenson back in the day 😂😂😂
10:55 Germany since then: Reached 3 finals, won one of them, reached the semis 6 times *in a row* and are always title contenders
England: Only got to the Semis once, quarterfinals 5 times, losing 4 of them, 3 of them on penalties, didn't even qualify for 2008 and played Shite in 2014 and 2016, going out at the group stage in 14 and losing to Iceland in the round of 16 and Aren't really title contenders.
Well it took England 20 years after this to beat Germany in a major tournament.
Great video, thanks for posting.
Spot on comments too ... the idiocy of the English sports press never ceases to amaze.
I'm english and Germany are always better then England , England will never win anything where just not good enough
England are a king of friendlies and qualifiers , that was the golden generation of england , there they beat Germany , not a big deal , couldn't achieve any trophy that time still !!!! ridiculous !!!!
how can England be the king of qualifiers when they missed the 74 , 78 and 94 World Cup
thx for the upload, very interesting watch. Seems amazing now to see journalists having so much faith in the national side, the difference in optimism between then and now is stark.
cheers...
...and you are, of course, 'spot on' with your comments too.
Lawro's Tosh ha ha ha ha. So frustrating the potential of this team was never fulfilled. Also why was Hazel Irvine doing footy!
You have very interesting and rare videos mate!you have that rare interest.
Why don't you take a look at the German reaction to this game.
mark Lawrencen aka barry chuckle
It's incredible during this period as Paddy says this is an arrogant nation it is true. During this time the Germans reached the 2002 World Cup final, 2006 World Cup 3rd place, 2008 finalists at the European Championships. From 2010 until now the rest is history. Any English fan would love to have that record from 2000 until 2010. It shows the sheer level of class.
Watching this is so funny
"Greece at Old Trafford, no problem what so ever"... Thank you Mr Beckham
Very well said... and all too true.
... and thanks for your comments too.
LOL.... Beckham sounds like an Eunuch...hahaha
Why the fuck is Hazel Irvine there.
The Germans are smart asses. They lured the English into a comfort zone after that 5-1 and effectively made them overestimating themselves completely:-D
Englands demise started with that 5-1.....and if England loses nowadays, hey we watch the DVD of that 5-1....and change nothing.
How about England are just far up their own arses to end up being knocked out in the QF as usual. They won 5-1 in a qualifying match, but when it's time to really deliver, it's all talk no show time and time again.
It WAS the worst German team ever! They only played well against Saudi Arabia and in the final. In all other matches they were so bad and without Oliver Kahn they would have been out in the Round of 16 or at the very maximum in the quarter finals.
great upload. all got a bit carried away didn't we....
Germany far better than England.. Mighty distance.. What is with England for Germany.. 8 finals.. 4 World Cup..
10:51 what you came to hear.
At which time did the Football Focus special air on Sunday Grandstand?
Could not agree more with your comments. Also it was the story of Beckhams foot wasn't it.? Broken five weeks before the finals. This byglenn character looks like a troll. Done the same to my comments further down the page.
Hey.mate can u upload spanish la liga ganes from 2001-02
its easy to look back now and lol and we all thought michael owen would be world class and for a time he was
The set design looks outdated. So early 2000's.
We're Germany, we win when we want.
And how proud they must be to have not lost to Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Cameroon, Paraguay, USA or South Korea. Come on, let's be honest, has there ever been an easier route to the final?
The last time England beat a heavy weight team in a major tournament was in 1996 vs the Netherlands. 24 years ago lol
@whiskydancer ...we did indeed.
...but for a while, it was nice to ride on the crest of a wave of national furore.
Watching a different game? They dominated with Ronaldo and Rivaldo
Did we beat albania?
DAVID: We did that and not, “ We done that”.
Cheers for all your positive comments...
Do have a look through some of the other uploads... your comments, welcomed (good or bad)
We did... 2-0
To my memory, Robbie Fowler coming on from the subs bench to score the second late on in the game.
....and Germany reached the WC final one year later, and won it in 12, while they successfully reached every single major tournament semifinal since 06. Meanwhile, England was yet to win any trophy as they did not qualify for the Euros in 08 and got knocked out by minnows Iceland in Euro 2016.
"I don't see who could stop them" 🤣
it was a qualification game. in the tournament, they didn't make it to the semifinals. as usual. and the germans did.
Germany had a straight forward route to that final through
Since then how many finals have Germany won compared to England's ZERO
look who they faced to get to the final though. They didn't play a single strong team and were knocked out by the same team that knocked out england
If the ref had given the perforectly fine Lampard goal in 2010 it would all have been different
Yeah, it would have been 4-2 to Germany.
England will forever be in germanys shadow ffs
England Need 100 years to Catch up germany
Germany didn't "have to play Shevchenko's Ukraine" because of this England game. They had to play Ukraine because they didn't beat Finland in their last game (0-0). Had Germany beaten Finland on the last day they would have automatically qualified because England drew 2-2 with Greece (Beckham's free kick).
England still almost cocked it up against Greece in the last game. I think a win was required initially but Germany messed up their last match as well.
Ha Wes Brown promising what happened there then?
Despite all that has happened since, I still think that the England Football Team that played in 2001/02 was one of the best squads we've had in recent years. I remember before the England v Brazil Quarter-Final in the '02 World Cup, loads of people (myself included) were of the opinion that whoever won that match would win the World Cup. And guess what? Brazil went on to win their fifth World Cup. It's all been downhill for England since then, unfortunately.
They still had to do it though and the way they did it they deserved to be there. England supposedly had an easy route to at least the semis in 2010 but didnt get anywhere near
"i dont know how can stop us" ...." michael owen is the best in europe" this is FUCKIN HILARIOUS
owen won the ballon dor in 2001, nothing hilarious about it, great player in his prime
We are so friggin deluded in terms of football.
Dear god!
Ballack wasn't stripped of the captaincy, he was ruled out of the 2010 World Cup through injury and then he retired from international football
And the glory days have carried on ever since!
If England had the same path, they would have been in the final as well
Wes Brown one of the most promising youngsters. Football, bloody hell.
He had a decent career, no?
It's interesting to look back at this with the hindsight of how Germany and England developed their football as a whole. Germany had a wake up call, not from this game alone, but from how their national team performed in that era. England will never find international success without rebuilding the entire football foundation in the country. And, like Germany, it will take 10 years.
a freak result lets no kid ourselves
Wes Brown mentioned before Rio Ferdinand in terms of promising young players... crikey! haha
this is hilarious the hype about Micheal Owen,
"he gone through alot of injuries" and he only 21 !
Free kick for German second goal in WC final shouldn't have stood
