It’s long overdue that people should give credit to the person who actually composed Take Five: Paul Desmond. Dave Brubeck constantly gets credit for this amazing composition, but that honor goes to Paul Desmond. As much as I love Brubeck I wish folks would get this credit right. By the way, and not by the way, this was an impressive arrangement. Truly loved the total percussion arrangement. Bravo!
Me too! To this day I think Joe Morello’s drum solo was among the very best ever. And I got to meet him when I was about 14. It was a highlight of my teenage years.
Florian Wolf, while Dave Brubeck may have had a very positive reaction to this performance, this piece was composed, as h wobs correctly points out, it was composed by Paul Desmond, and I also agree with h wobs that it is about time Desmond got his due credit.
There's just something wonderful about this meter. Things in 5 have a self perpetuating no need to ever stop feel to them. The number 5 might be a odd number, but there's nothing odd about things written in 5. Sounds so right.
awesome rendition! I've always loved marimba in jazz (in addition to the vibes). This kicks ass. Also, the primary composer was Paul Desmond. He should be credited.
Yes Paul Desmond (alto sax in the Dave Brubeck quartet) composed this timeless tune. Factoid: he assigned his royalties to the Red Cross charity, who still benefit greatly from his talent and generosity.
Apparently it all started with Joe Morello's drum beat and then it developed from there. Either way the 4 guys in the quartet were all musical wizards and the music they created is unlike anything else.
I love this. Such a beautiful version and breathtaking performance. I have always loved this tune. I tried to come up with a version for solo guitar, but I could never quite pull it off.
Coolest tune evry and singularly most amazing recorded drum solo in history, would have been cool to see it stuck to the script though). Nice you paying respects like anyway. ))
Since this is a college percussion ensemble, And the students are most likely studing music theory, piano & sight singing and reading, It surprises me that the vibes players are only using only 1 mallet in each hand. Since the vibes metal notes are set up like a piano, Players usually use 2 mallets in each hand to play 4 note chords. As it takes at least 3 notes to make a triad chord. But kudos to these young players for studying, learning, playing and listening to something other than Eddie Vedder, Which always gives me hope for the musical future, Check out a Lional Hampton performance to see how the Vibes are played properly with 2 mallets in each hand to play chords and to solo.

Exactly my thought...
Totally agree.
In 1962 I heard take five. I took up drumming. It was first song I played on my drum set. Love Take five!!!!
Wow. Can't do much better inspiration-wise than the great Joe Morello aka the coolest man I ever saw.
1962? So cool, back then, what happened? no good music anymore
5/4 tempo is fun.

1967 my Dad brought it home and played the record and my drumming had a direction!
Paul Desmond was the compose of Take Five. He was the sax player in Dave Brubeck Quartet. Please don’t forget Eugene Wright , bass.
...and Joe Morello
Wow 9 years after I am watching today in late 2023. Loved it. Where would be these kids today, I wonder, hope you all are doing great.
An absolutely extraordinary performance, Dave Brubeck would have been VERY proud of these guys ! They nailed it, absolutely.
