I've had 2 E39 M5's. Had my first for 3 years, cost me fuel, alot of that and 3 services. That's it. 2nd one was in much rougher shape, 120000 miles, cost me £500 to diagnose and fix and intermittent misfire, fuel and 3 services, thats it. They are 20 years old now, shit wears, drive sensibly, warm up properly, don't bounce on the rev-limiter and that are very reliable, but they are old, stuff will go wrong, perhaps I was just lycky with mine. And as with ANY 20+ year old BMW you DO NOT drive it in the salt of winter.
Apart from my diff going, technically I could’ve just regularly serviced my car and have been in the same position. I do like fixing every niggle hence the large maintenance bill. They are great cars and on the whole quite reliable if looked after (as you say). Rot can be a problem but luckily the common problem areas are relatively easy to rectify. I see you mentioned annual car tax for an M5 in the UK as being £290.00. Here in Ireland, we pay car tax based on the size of the engine (for cars registered before 2008). For an M5, the annual rate is €1,809.00 or, if you choose to pay quarterly, the rate is €511.00. Yes, that is €511.00 every 3 months - or €2,044 p.a. ! In the USA, they don't have car tax, only an annual registration fee of $20. I think we must pay one of the highest rates of car tax in the world. It's enough to make a grown man cry.
Damn 🫣! I’m definitely not envious! Pretty crazy they can command that sort of money purely to own a car. Bet you’re potholes are as bad as here too 🤣 Thanks for watching !
That's insane. In most places in the US we pay sales tax on purchase price when we buy the car and annual registration. It varies by state. My M5 in Tennessee is about $75. But in California they base registration on the value of the vehicle. I have motorcycle registered there and it's valued at about $2500 and registration is $209.

I test drove one of these about 18 years ago. At the time my daily driver was a UR audi quattro 20v with about 220bhp. I had that car down to a fine art and it was 4wd. However, when I drove the M5, I feared I would end up in the hedge or worse. So believe it or not I decided against the M5 because it was too powerful and I wasn't confident I would have the self control to not over-use the power. Did I do the right thing? Financially no. So I ended up buying a Jaguar XJ8 4.0 with 290 bph which was brisk, but not like the M5. A good M5 now is becoming hard to find and valuable.

But I don’t think I would feel as comfortable owning it over a long period of time as well as using it the way the car gods intended. Rod bearings, smg pump, stuck injectors, throttle actuators. An expensive list. I personally think they are all really good in their own way but the V10 is certainly special !!
I own both ..to be honest I enjoy driving e39 m5 ..but when I drive e60 m5 it is just magic my friend..this car is really a master engineering.the way it behave after 6000 rpm is unbelievable.you have to drive one to understand what I mean .
6 grand damn, I love the look of these but the steering puts me off. However, not much else out there that is as good.
The Diff going immediately didn’t help! A lot of the things I’ve done aren’t completely necessary and more preventative so you could definitely run this car for less. Lots of jobs like when I changed my rocker cover gaskets, lead you to difficult to reach places that you might as well replace everything in them while you’re there which definitely adds up!
@@carchaps I realise you can go down a rabbit hole, buying on condition rather than miles is a good idea with these old performance cars.
Definitely agree! Big selling point for me was it had had the big 3 done recently at Mr Vanos 👌🏻
Try one. The steering has never been an issue for me whenever I've driven one.
It’s not the fastest it’s not the best handling it’s not the best sounding are we talking about an m5 or a 520d lol the car is 20 years old and is still a weapon
100 %…… All factual statements but I guess I was trying to say that it doesn’t matter as this car provides the same/if not more enjoyment for the driver compared to some ‘better’ models. Thanks for watching !!
E39 M5 Is it as good ?..Nope .........it's better
That's 10mins of my life I won't get back
Thanks for watching! Looking forward to seeing the videos you upload soon !!
Alright Scotty Kilmer …enjoy your Toyota themed mid life crisis 😂
Nah dude. E60 M5 S85 V10 is the greatest. Don’t get me wrong, E39 M5 is great, but not like the E60 M5.
As with everything, personal choice 🤷🏻♂️ Can totally see why someone would want the E60 over the E39 !
@Eklips Kustoms (Razeen Francis) obviously you don’t own one and never will because you can’t afford to own one.
SMG takes some getting used to. E60 M5 leaves a few things to be desired. Ride quality, range, cost of running. There's an argument for both. I own an E63 M6 and it's interesting but I wouldn't change it.
@@ArthurJGibson exactly. Smg is so misunderstood thus when abused by those who have no understanding of the mechanisms that are in motion, damage them then trash talk. Same with the S85. All you hear the haters say is: rod bearing failure, etc. these cars separates the men from the boys.
