Tire Pressure - Prius MPG test #4

  • In this video, I'm doing an mpg test with tires set at 30 psi cold vs 40 psi cold. I will take tire pressure readings after the drive route to see how much the psi increases. I drove a city and highway route. With the higher tire pressure, it feels like the car rolls better.

    From watching some off-road tire stuff adding air pressure seems to make the tires a wider diameter, so your speedometer and odometer might change a little. A taller tire would show less miles driven, and maybe throw the math off making it seem like you got the same MPG, but your car is inaccurate after changing tire pressure. A truck channel did these tests and they used map software to track the distance, and did the same route twice. The truck showed the odometer was different with different air pressures. They got about 9% better fuel economy with the higher pressure.

    Cool video! I recognized my boyhood hometown and the drive on Kalanianaole Highway, Hawaii Kai, and Koko Marina Shopping Center. 😂

    at highway speed of 60MPH +, the aerodynamic drag of the car's body is probably outweighing the small improvements the tires gave however if someone is commuting at local road speed of 20~50MPH than it makes sense to increase the tire pressure to benefit the mileage saving.

    For my camry 2015 when i they are more than 35 i feel that the car is heavy 😢. Driving uncomfortable.

    I drive a Opel/ Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 cdti at 40psi it’s really rough. At comfort pressure recommended 32F/30R it’s super smooth. At 40psi hitting speed bumps sounds like your snapping the suspension in half, ‘ I actually try and do a little jump in the seat before I hit them to somehow subconsciously lower the weight hitting them ‘ 😂 fml

    What year Prius and is it a plugin hybrid or just hybrid?

    I guess tire pressure doesn’t matter on the highway because rolling resistance decreases when going fast. You can assume tires are polygons and feels more round when going fast. That makes sense for city mpg.

      I drive a very fuel efficient car, a prius prime. At 34 psi, I got 46-47 MPG highway, at 42 psi, I got 51-52 MPG highway. It's not a huge difference but certainly an improvement.

      @@edwardlouie I have a Hyundai Ioniq. It’s rated at 59mpg highway but going 70-80 on the interstate I get like 43 mpg. It’s horrible

    • @edwardlouie
      @edwardlouie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @PhaseSkater did you have the hvac on? The ioniq doesn't have a heat pump in the hybrid and phev versions, they only put a heat pump in the ev version. The amount of energy the ioniq hvac uses is likely double or triple the energy of the prius prime which uses a vapor injection heat pump. That energy comes from the gas engine reducing the MPG.

    tire pressure depends on the weight of the load

      I drive a MG5 sedan which is a front wheel drive. If i have heavy load or passengers, should my front wheel have more psi than the rear or they have both same air pressure?

      i went to 37 psi as my mechanic recommends for winter. Braking was just horrible on snow/ice/dry roads. But it does accelerate faster though. I went down to 34 psi and everything smooth again lol.

    I bet the car was less comfortable at 40ish psi.

  • @DJWhitetailfluff

    If this looks to be a Toyota Prius as the model I most likely think it is they recommend 35 psi front and 33 psi rear. You went technically from having all tires under inflated to all tire overinflated. These Priuses are usually setup to be staggered on their tire psi.
