I think what Dan is trying to say here is that Jona’s singing here is highly technical, with the frequent switching of the vocal placements from chest to head, from full to airy, from belting to soft. All those are part of the dynamics in singing a song. And this song is a highly dynamic song, which requires a highly technical singer to be able to pull off those very difficult notes and vocal riffs. As much as I love her singing and this song, I would not advice Jona to sing this song a lot. That airy approach in hitting notes, as beautiful as it may sound, can be very damaging to a singers’ voice when done a lot, and it’s done a lot in most of Mariah’s songs, and look at what happened to Mariah’s voice. Otherwise, this is such a fantastic number from Jona.
But also 1 Mariah has nodules and has them her entire life and 2 well she never did rest her voice in the 90a, just non stop singing and has made some of the hardest songs there are but yes that airy whisper thing she does can be bad but that's not the main reason to why her voice is damaged
Mariah Carey's version is with backup singers with her. Now Jona, leveled this up by making this SOOOOO RAW! This is incridibly a vocal suicide but she did it well! Shifting form chest to headtone is extremely hard. Try to watch mariah live. You're right when you say it is very technical song but Jona delivered this deserves a big standing ovation.

Even Mariah-who is the original singer-was reportedly having difficulty singing this live and had to use some backup vocals in some of her live performances. What makes this really hard to sing is the frequent shifting from chest voice to head voice. Add another layer of timing the riffs and runs, the song gets even harder to master without slowing it down and changing the melody for a singer to be able to sing it. And Jona delivered an extremely flawless performance here, she sang it without dropping a single note and without resorting to ad libs and unnecessary melody changes.
