Hi Robert. I have a KM that I've had since I bought it new in 1979. Just a little thing to start, "KM" stands for Kalamzoo Model not just Kalamazoo. The reason that neck is different is it's called a "Norlin neck". Norlin was a company that made necks for Gibson from the mid-70s to the early 80s, and they were much thinner than what we consider a "LP Standard neck". The volute is there to support the thinnest part of the neck and the headstock joint...it's SUPER strong. Once the Norlin contract was over, so was that style of neck.
The bad part about that neck...I retired my KM from gigging a number of years back and thought "I'll just bite the bullet and buy a new LP to use." NONE of the new LPs have that neck, they are all the big thick necks. Since I had the KM for almost 35 years at the time, it was like my best friend and NONE of the new LPs play anything like it. I ended up moving to Fenders to play live.
The real story behind the KM is that it's the prototype for the 1980 LP Heritage...not the Heritage company but the actual Gibson Heritage model. The Heritage model was supposed to be THE reissue of the '59 LP Standard. Oddly enough, as you pointed out, the KM prototypes (the 1500 made) were nothing like the '59. Well, some of the engineers didn't care for the Heritage guitar they ended up with and wanted to sell the KM style guitar and the others didn't.
Well...the KM went away, the Heritage was produced, and the company broke up. The KM is the guitar that was the last straw for the Gibson crew. Gibson went their way and the rest...well, they started the Heritage Guitar Company we have today. You can think of the KM as being the guitar that broke Gibson.
How do I know this? Over the years I had a couple of conversations with Les Paul (the man) and the first one was almost all about the KM and that last paragraph was almost Les Paul's words verbatim. And, get this...
Les said the KM was the last project he worked on with Gibson and that he played every single KM that came off the line. Les played your guitar and my guitar!!! That's bad ass! He said a lot of them were junk but the ones that were good were great! So, while some were bought up by Japanese buyers, many of them were thrown away or probably burned. But, my friend, you and I got a couple of the great ones! I know a few other people who have the KM too and they love theirs just as much as you and I love ours.
It's a great guitar, but it also has an interesting story behind it. Just thought I'd pass that on to you, being another lover of the KM.

      @DogCatchersBand 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Holy Gibson, Mike! What a FANTASTIC insight into the "KM!" I bought mine new 9/14/79: same color as Robert's (Antique Sunburst), but mine had to have been one of the first run due to the "Custom Made" badge beneath the tailpiece (I've only seen one other like that, in a natural finish, for sale in Albany, NY back around 1980). I'm thrilled to death that Les was involved in the project, and that he actually played my guitar!! Mine is truly one of the great ones, and just like yourself, I retired it years ago and became a Fender player: same story!

@@cromBumny you’re right. But in history it’s one of the best things they made. The mainstay LPs were great. Norlin gets most of their bad rap for the guitars they crafted and tried to make and sell during their ownership…The Paul, Sonex, L6-S, RD, Grabber and Ripper, and some others. The designs were borderline but the playability and innovation was no where the stock that their classic models had.

Accidents love mahogany necks, and a slight bump when Lester is prone on a flat, hard surface will ruin your day. Thanks, just thought it might help someone.

A bit of trivia for you.
I have a 1977 Kalamazoo LP with identical closed Gibson logo.
I purchased in an Australian Melbourne suburban music store in 1979.
It is tobacco sunburst however unlike your particular model, the sunburst continues on the back of the neck & headstock and different to your Gibson it has a gold coloured Deluxe Decal on back of headstock despite it actually being a Standard model There were odd things happening with Gibson at that the Kalamazoo factory at the time.
According to Ian C Bishop of the 1978 published book (The Gibson Guitar From 1950).
    Ian states:
(In 1975-76 some models had Gibson deluxe decals on standard models placed in error on them & in 1976 he had seen some dealers receive stock delivered with 8 digit serial codes).
He, however, makes no mention of the Gibson logo variation on the front of the headstock.
Well done Rob, it is a nice sounding and looking Guitar.
Like you I have played many over the years but to date have found nothing with a similar feel to what I own. The only negative if you could call it that, is, it is very heavy.
Though I too must admit to being an MIA Tele and Strat person just something about their necks that suits my confort zone.

'When you find the right one you have to buy it'. Nailed it right there Robert. I wasn't a big Gibson guy either(bought a couple of dogs when I was young), but after years of searching I found 'the right one' about 3-4 years ago. It isn't exotic like your KM, it is just a 2005 Honeyburst...but it rocks.
Thing is, after I bought it, I found another 'right one' from the Custom Shop and had to buy it too. I guess not a problem, but once I was clued into how great some LPs can be from personal experience I am on the lookout for more 'right ones'...OK maybe cultivating a bit of a problem...
Beautiful LP you have there. Do you mind disclosing what you paid for it? Just curious. Thx.
PS You are right about the attempt at duplicating the '59...that guitar is a plain-top(like the '58), '59s were 'bursts. Cheers.

Details on 1979 Les Paul Kalamazoo:
It has a 1-piece Mahogany body w/ 2-piece bookmatched Maple top in tobacco burst! The neck is 3-piece Mahogany with a rosewood fretboard. Has the Grover tuners and the stock “double-wide” T-Top Humbucking pickups. Also has original T-6 fine tunning bridge! They came in 3 colors--natural, cherry sunburst, and a tobacco sunburst. Les Paul KM on the truss rod cover. Some had the "Custom Made" plaque, and some didn't. They came with Protector cases. Some of the last Kalamazoo guitars made, and only 1500 of these were made.

Great video! Another fab vintage, is the 1976 Les Paul custom. It has a maple neck!!! It sounds amazing. I believe they did this from 1974 to 1977? They went back to mahogany again after getting slated by the critics, “Whats This”! “How Dare They”! “Fender Use Maple”! “It’s Not A Gibson Anymore”! Etc, Etc, Etc!!! They made quite a lot with the slightly egg shaped neck for the thumb over the neck chord players, but I think they experimented that on a few models? A rumour why they used maple was because of a shortage of fine mahogany. Another rumour for the shortage was a vengeful worker after getting the sack started a fire at the wood yard! Hmmm? Rumours? Still, a fine guitar worth checking out. I’m old school, I’m 59 now and still on the road, still rocking! Lol!
You videos are fantastic. The guitar will never die. The more the commercial radio stations hate it, the more people love it! Keep it going Robert! You have a brilliant channel and you’re a very talented player. Thank you! David.

I have a 1977 custom. I love it. But 2 things that were great improvements and helped the tuning stability were the volute and the lesser degree angle of the headstock. Modern is 17degrees and 70s were around 13 or 14 degrees. It makes a huge difference

Robert, beautiful guitar brother! I own a Les Paul that I love and didn't realize what I had until I actually called Gibson back in 1985. I purchased a 1983 Custom Shop "Spotlight Special" used. One owner and never played. I was told by Gibson that there were only 211 of these built because the company was going under and they wanted to show guitar players Worldwide what they could produce! I don't play it anymore! I am a fanatic with my guitars and if I would have known what it was at the time I wouldn't have bought it, although I'm glad I did! Gibson did a reissue about 10 years ago! I just wanted to share my story about buying a Les that was different but I didn't know why!!

    Yeo Robert Baker,
Just wanted to tell you my mother worked on that guitar. I was born & raised in Kalamazoo. My mom worked at Gibson from 1962 until 1984 when they moved to Nashville. They offered her same job in Nashville but she didn't want to move. She started in the string department over on Fulford street. When gibson made strings, and Amp's. After about 8 months she transferred over to Parsons street. The old factory you showed. When she retired in 84 she was a fingerboard inspector. One of only two. She took great pride in her work and it had to be RIGHT if it passed her work bench. I still have her dial calipers and veneers. I've got lots of stories. She met alot of famous people. They would order a guitar or two, or seven, many times they would come to Kalamazoo to pick them up and go on a tour of the plant. I got a call one Saturday from a boss of hers and invited me to come check out a guitar they just finished. So I flew down there and got to play a guitar Ted Nugent ordered before he even saw it.
Anyway keep on rockin and thanks for the video

Robert, I have a '57 RI Goldtop. Love it! I changed out the pups and put Suhr Doug Aldrich in the neck and bridge. Other than that it is stock. Oh, forgot one thing. You mentioned the G string curse of going out of tune. I had the problem with mine until I installed a brass nut. Now it stays in tune. My other guitar player in my Classic Rock band is constantly tuning his G string. Mine stays in tune for the whole gig. Don't need any other guitars for this reason. Years ago, I had a tech file the saddles smooth and it never breaks strings. Only once in the last 6 years!

What strings are you using, I have been using Super Slinkys. Oddly one of the things that made the most difference in my playing and sound is switching to a DAVA Yellow Dot carbon fiber pick, amazing the difference. I have played Gibson Les Pauls for 40 years, from the 70’s LP custom “fretless wonders” to the late model custom shop reissues. I have never seen, or herd a 1979 Les Paul “KM”. Your LP looks and sounds great.
Let’s all pray that the new leadership at Gibson can turn things around and develop some consistency in the LP classic, traditional and standard models.
Perhaps 40 years from now my kids 2019 LP standard will be worth talking about on TH-cam, who knows!!

I have had a couple Les Pauls but they were nothing special. My last was a 2012 standard I think. It was the most beautiful instrument I have ever seen but was nothing special to play. It was the only guitar I have ever sold. I have recently acquired a 2017 1960 reissue with the 60 mirrored knobs, darkburst. It doesn't look as nice as my last paul but plays like a dream. Slim 60's neck feels great and the custombuckers have that 50's tone. This is the one for me. So I definitely get the part where you said that one clicked for you. Enjoy that piece of history you are so blessed to have.

I mostly agree. My '97 that came with grovers stays in tune. My '18 that came with gibson deluxe actually came with 2 dead tuners right out of the box. I guess that problem is one of getting to tune rather than staying there. I love the guitar anyway, even if the workers fine it too much effort to secure the post to the gear in sealed tuners. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned so apologies if that's the case. That neck sounds like it's the same as a 61 Custom. It has the effect of making the headstock look larger than a standard headstock. The 61s were nicknamed "Ghostfrets" because of their low profile so even you thinking that, the frets are worn, might actually be in part, that that's how it was built they didn't stand the proud to begin with..

You don't see K.M.'s very often. I've had mine for 37 years. Original owner. I have the original pickups but they need some love because they went in and out of other guitars. That's what you do when you're 18, right? LOL!
It has Seymour Duncan 59's in it now but I'm considering some BKP's.
A few years ago I had it refretted and plek'd with stainless frets by Phil Jacoby. He also replaced the nut with a bone nut. I swapped the original bridge with a "TonePros AVR-II Tune-o-matic Bridge" & the tailpiece with a "Kluson Lightweight Aluminum Stop Tailpiece".
The bridge, nut and frets were a must as this baby had been played to death! I can honestly say it plays better than ever.

Wow, that is an exact duplicate of the one I bought new 41 years ago with exception of the missing "Custom Made" badge beneath the tailpiece (rumored to only have been installed on the first run). It is an amazing guitar with it's own personality. The single piece mahogany body is another feature along with the genuine mother of pearl crown inlays, and I've been told it has better shielding inside the cavity. The repair dude tried for years to buy it off me, tried to get me to swap pickups: I was having none of that: he said the guitar was like "a pizza with the works!" BTW that color, which I thought was Tobacco Sunburst, is actually Antique Sunburst according to Gibson. Thanks for posting this awesome video, you sound great!

In case anyone’s wondering why most of them got shipped out to Japan, it’s because the collectors market there for Vintage and Reissue guitars is enormous! Gibson even to this day has dozens of models that are Japan exclusive, while still remaining made in the US, such as 61 SG reissues, 59 Les Pauls, all the iconic guitars. There are a lot of guitar collectors in Japan, some of whom don’t even play guitar and rather collect the instruments to place them in a shrine for their favorite rock bands. With that being said, if you ever find yourself heading to Japan, bring a few pretty pennies, as the chance of you finding the perfect guitar while you’re over there is pretty high! Oh and a little P.S, after conversion rates, vintage guitars come out to be cheaper in Japan than they are in America!

Interesting how you describe the tone of your guitar. That would be a fairly accurate description of my 2006 59 reissue that I got a couple of months ago. Mine has a lot of complexity going on. All sorts of things going on. The bass strings have a bell like tone, and the highs are very clean and clear, yet it is till thick like a Les Paul should be. It is very loud acoustically, and it has some amazing sustain. A month later I bought a 2001 58 reissue and it's more of what one would expect from a Les Paul. It still has clarity but, it is not a "bright" tone. The bass strings are noticeable deeper and the highs are smoother. It is loud acoustically as well and the neck is a bit thinner than the 59 reissue is. The neck on 59 is very thick, whereas the 58 neck is medium thick. And I get more of an Allan Holdsworth/Allen Hinds tone from the bridge pickup with the tone rolled off than I do from the 59. I have wanted a reissue Les Paul for a while, and I feel blessed to have these instruments. They are top notch. Just thought I would share.
