    About 70 to 80% of braking force is done by the front wheels. To have effective regenerative breaking you need front wheel drive.

    Thank you for nice straightforward, real-world reviews.
    My guess on the ability to disable wireless charging: If your phone doesn't need charging while you drive, but that's where you always put your phone when driving, then at least you get a few more yards of range by sparing the car's battery?

      Kona was designed as an EV with the potential for ICE models to follow. Problems with Chinese supply batteries (whether they still use these or not I don’t know) meant the ICE models hit the road first...

    Hi from Ireland. I am aTesla. model three reservationist and have been since the 31st of April 2016. The configurator for the right-hand drive M3 has only recently opened up and I have configured and placed my order. Hoping to get delivery very soon.
    Anyway in this video you asked What would be a good reason for not using the wireless charging. I currently have Hyundai Ioniq which as I’m sure you are aware a lot of the tech that’s in the Kona was first introduced in the Ioniq.
    Anyway one day while on a road trip I was charging my iPhone X in the wireless charger driving along minding my own business enjoying the scenery and just totally relaxed and having fun on the road trip. When all of a sudden the large 8 inch screen displayed all in red battery overheating warning. Which frightened the living SH I T out of me!! As you know the Hyundai Electric vehicles all have Apple CarPlay. In order to use Apple CarPlay you have to plug in the USB cable into your iPhone. So I always keep my phone in the wireless charging pocket with the USB cable connected to the iPhone which meant my iPhone was being charged boat from the wireless charger and from the USB cable.
    When I got the large red warning on the 8 inch infotainment screen I automatically assume that as I think many others would have that it was the traction battery for the car that was overheating never dawned on me that it was the battery in the iPhone that was actually overheating. I have never used the wireless charging dock since. That’s got to be a dam good reason as to why you should not use it.
    On another point I have to tell you I totally enjoy your videos as I have recently subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work. Goodbye from Ireland for now. Regards Séamus

      I know this is a LONG time later - but Apple replaced my iPhone X THREE times due to battery overheats/failure over the two or maybe three years I used it. The last one was Ok (I still have it). Replaced with a 13 pro with no probs. In Australia they have to give a new warranty time - so that was good. I have a 2023MY Kona and it’s great - although I’ve only done about 1500km…

    The cell phone charging feature can be disengaged if you want to store coins there...or some other metallic things.
    I go back and forth on using it: sometimes I just want to throw my non-sunglasses there b/c they have metal screws in them and I don't want to start a problem (fire?).

    I believe the option to turn off wireless charging is to ensure we can place the phone on the wireless pad while android auto or apple car play is running (which needs a physical wired connection and will charge the phone as well). You probably do not want to charge the phone both via cable and wireless charging at the same time. I may be wrong here but I haven't tried charging a phone hardwired while placing it on a active wireless charging pad.

    It is ev small SUV. I drive this Kona mainly in ecodrive and with adaptive cruisecontrole on. if you drive it as a sports car, the wheels will spin. Sportmode is fun to try, but not very comfortable to drive. You feel every movement in your feet in de speed. For me it is a great car with an impressive range!

  • @Wombat-gm4ne
    @Wombat-gm4ne ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had a Kona Electric 2022 model in Australia for a few weeks clocking up about 800 klm - despite putting my foot down fairly hard on dry and wet roads I have never spun the front wheels perhaps because the car came as standard with very good grip tyres- Micheline Primacy. I understand early Kona Electric vehicles game with very poor grip Nexen tyres hence poor handling and wheel spinning/ The Micheline tyres provide a huge improvement in handling, breaking but come with shorter tyre life - personally I'll choose safe tyres every time.
    As an aside, "her in doors" and I love our Kona and because we very rarely do more than 30 K a day - we most days plug in at our garage standard home power point (240 V AC - 1.7 Kw H) and are recharged in 2 or 3 hours free from our roof top solar voltaic on our roof - life is good.

    I read in the users' manual NOT to put coins in the wireless charging area, as it's a fire risk. I'd be sure the reason for the 'turn off' option is because old habits from new owners: that charging area seems like the best place to throw change after the toll booth or drive thru!
    Question: Would wider aftermarket front tires help traction?

    I know this is an old video- but I just bought a used 2021 electric Kona Ultimate- and I wanted to say that I disabled the charging pad because of a couple heat related issues- my phone has a thick case, idealy you want a touhc charge to not have the extra padding between the charing areas- also that little compartment for the phone is not well ventilated (something thats been addressed on newer models) ALSO I really like putting my phone there, but I tend to plug my phone in to the USB for android auto - but ot keep the ledge from putting pressure on the base of the cable I put a small item behind my phone so the base of my phone sticks up a little and takes the pressure off the usb cable... all three of these reasons, I have disabled the charging pad- but I do like ot use the spot for my phone- nowhere else felt right- and theres not a lot of room in an area I like to use a phone mount (a slight downside to having the 12.5inch media screen I guess.

    I presume the ability to charge to a max. of 10%, is a throwback to shipping & delivery transport. So the vehicle is kept and transported with a minimal charge and it’s not taxing, to decide what % to charge the vehicle to at the point of leaving the factory. And also, the vehicles are not being transport with fully charged packs, plus Hyundai aren’t paying for excess electricity they’ll never use.

My garage has GFI outlets that DON"T have the T shaped slot indicating that the 120-volt receptacle is rated for 20-amps. Regular wall receptacles with a pair of vertical slots are rated for only 15-amps. Would this level 1 Hyundai charger for the Kona on my 15 amp circuit?

    • @cashgordon8845
      @cashgordon8845 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Level 1 charge cord that comes with the Kona lets you select the maximum amperage. The default is 12A, but you can lower it to 10A or 8A. A 15A receptacle *should* be able to handle 12A continuous, but with residential wiring I would strongly recommend setting it to 10A.

  • @drmcallis
    @drmcallis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    THAT is the advantage of front-wheel-drive for an EV : regen. It's one reason it regens better than those rear-wheel-drive EVs. The weight transfer on braking makes the regen much more efficient. So that FWD EV feature has a good reason.

    • @nc3826
      @nc3826 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much more efficient? is the regen in front-wheel-drive vs rear-wheel-drive?
      since Tesla and BMW have rear wheel drive BEVs on the market and they have high efficiency....even if what you say is true? it's not a major factor... is it?
      show us the studies?

    • @drmcallis
      @drmcallis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nc3826 I know of no studies, fair enough.
      But there was a very good reason that many cars with "mixed" brakes put the discs in front and the drums in back. Due to weight transfers, that's where you need the most braking power. Even now with four-wheel discs, the fronts are invariably larger. The fronts do most of the braking. That is where the braking energy is. If you want to recover that energy, you go where the energy is.
      Tesla and BMW have among the most efficient motors and body designs (CDA counts a good deal). And if I am not mistaken, aren't the Dual Motor Teslas more efficient on range than the RWD ones on a given battery size? Could that not be due to the existence of the generator/motor in the front, perhaps? Evidence, maybe, of what I am claiming?

    • @nc3826
      @nc3826 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drmcallis Ofc most Dual Motor EVs should be more efficient at regen braking since there is greater contact area to for regen vs RWD versions (BTW they use 2 different types of motors so that skewes the results) ...
      And while the physics of "weight transfers" decreases the adhesion and there for the theoretical maximum braking force that can be applied to the rear wheels vs the front wheels..So historical it has been easier to just use larger brakes on the front of non regen ICE cars.
      But braking with the rear wheels is much more stable than the front wheels. So in the real world it's much easier to safely apply the braking force to the rear wheels and only use the front wheels in hard stopping emergency situation. Conversely rear wheel braking is always advisable when the front brakes are applied to maintain stability. So based on the trade off a well designed rear wheel drive EV should have regen capabilities that surpass a front wheel drive EV in most situations. But its would be hard to find a way to have an apples to apples comparison?
      If you have ever ridden a bike you should be familiar with the braking dynamics since the front and rear brake are applied individually unlike in a car. Most ppl wear out the rear brake 1st on bike since its easier to control.
      BTW anecdotally the fact that the Kona EV FWD and the Tesla RWD both have high efficient for an EV it seems doubtful the debates we are having is very relevant anyway?
      thx for your input...

    Kyle. Today /17/2020 I test drove a 2019 Kona limited... the power on acceleration did not seem impressive and a very strange, albeit dangerous thing happened when I ACCELERATED onto a highway and then attempted to pass a bus in the slow lane. The car suddenly lost power and went from the initial 60mph quickly down to 35 mph and stayed there despite pressure on the accelerator!!! I moved over behind the bus and immediately took an exit. The dash lit up with a RED little turtle light and it said that power loss occurred and attempts to continue could damage the electrical system!!! I pulled off onto the shoulder and stopped and the sales agent looked in the manual which described the warning without explanation. It then disappeared and the car was able to be driven on local roads back to the dealership. The range remaining during this episode was about 29 miles. Any ideas? Any similar experiences??? I was not a “happy camper”.

    • @seqexpander
      @seqexpander 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      andrew scala 29 miles range (out of 258 miles) works out to ~11% battery capacity! it's the equivalent of letting someone test drive a gas vehicle running on empty. In both cases the sensors are not 100% accurate, and an ev has additional failsafes to prevent damage to the battery and components. So idk what they expected to happen. In the rare case you need to drive on a low charge, you should only use eco or eco+ mode (instead of normal or sport) and being very easy on the accelerator on the way to a power source to charge up. Ever had an RC toy car? When the battery is low you don't have the same power or top speed you had at at a quarter, half or full charge. or comparable to a smartphone going into an emergency low battery saver mode slowing everything down at 10% or 15% to better your chances at the battery not dying completely.

    Very informative, but the truth is it could have had a frunk...Frunk Hyundai Kona EV th-cam.com/video/0GRvSRlqtbc/w-d-xo.html
    So ppl should stop using the false meme that flexible platforms (ie that can use different power sources) necessarily have a less efficient layout when used as a BEV then BEV only platform...
    BTW Tesla is able to fit in a frunk... since its been able to reduce the number and size of the parts needed.... so there is more room for a frunk... and it has little to do with the fact it's a BEV only platform...

    All my cars have been FWD since 2000. Kwit yor bitchin'! As far as slowing the car, you let cruise control and one pedal driving stop your car. Most of my EV charging planning is done online which is best since most chargers start with smart phone apps. What idiot drives around with a noisy sun roof open?! Auto hold is the best to use. Why didn't you praise the HUD? Makes for safe driving. The horns works and is loud, are you one of those agressive drivers always on their horn? Kwit yor bitchin!
