    You are a very cool chic, knowing all that about my absolute number one arcade machine. I played it from day one in 1981 and quickly became an expert, made it into the invisible levels within a few weeks of playing it, winning many t shirts and trophies for high score along the way, I remember some kid finally beating all 99 levels about six months in, from some game magazine of the day. Bottom line, I could play it for almost two hours on one quarter...lol. Here's a little known secret. I discovered early on, that the Super Zapper actually worked twice each level! Albeit, it only gave a last ditch zap by killing the ONE demon that was in closest proximity to you!!! In other words, rather than zapping all monsters coming at you, it would only kill the closest one to you, and it saved my bum many a time... That's a secret from the past for you. Excellent review!

      There was also a fantastic port of Raiden, it had a Doom port by McCarmack himself, had ports of the outstanding games Syndicate and Cannon Fodder and Rayman. I saw my first Tempest in Las Vegas... not in America... Soho, London... roughly around 1982... Las Vegas was the name of the arcade... I used to bunk off school and get the train from the leafy home counties to the hustle and bustle of the big smoke... I knew my route from Waterloo station to Soho... another arcade called Family Leisure was round the corner almost... anyway I fell in love with game... it was raw, the sounds, the pin sharp graphics... the controls, the game-play... it was perfect... I used to stare at the little points between the lines and get lost in the vectors... I met the world champion of Atari Gravitar there one day playing Tempest... he told me of the credits trick and the choose any level trick... this is a fantastic bit of kit isn't it... you know a good Atari Star Wars would be amazing... anyway I'm making my own arcade game... hey ho

    If you are really into Tempest (and who isn't) you might wanna give N2O on the PS1 a try. No it was NOT created by the big Yak, but next to the Arcade original it's the most playable Tempest game out there and doesn't suffer like the other ports (2000,3000,4000, X3) from not having a rotary controller). The Soundtrack is by The Crystal Method and adds vastly to the immersive experience. N2O plays great, can still be had for just a few quid as it's pretty obscure and was made by Gremlin. In my humble opinion, although it's just a clone, it's several leagues ahead of Tempest X3 on the PS1 in terms of playability. You may wanna look up a video on it, to decide if you are interested in it.

      Asobi tech well come one, he’s an idiot for constantly remaking Tempest endlessly. I mean such talent could be better applied to other arcade classics. The best version of Tempest of his is Space Giraffe. Interestingly an article I recently read which was a rather through investigation into the story behind Polybius, concluded that Tempest was the game that people started making stories around as it was the only Tempest like game out in the area. The men in black part of the story came in that 3 Tempest cabinets in the Portland area were taken by the Feds to use in a gambling raid in Seattle. The smokey glass bezel allowed for the hiding of a camera.

    Hello...did you finish Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar? I did in the 90s(bought my Jaguar in early 1994 and waited for games to be released), one web is an INCREDIBLE sticking point...the cross-hair/“+” sign web(so HARD to see the enemies...blindside)...get past it and you then have a chance to finish the game and see Jeff Minter’s Yak.

    • @F1JV
      @F1JV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trista Bytes...COOL...I have an Atari VCS-II on order...Indiegogo backer...and am looking forward to Tempest 4000 on the system...that will be one of my first purchases. Minter’s Defender 2000 is INCREDIBLE as well(gameplay + soundtrack + visuals)...I have gotten SO FAR in the game but have never finished it...hopefully he does a Defender 4000 as well.

    I bought the last Centipede they had as they have no more and will NOT make anymore... So basically I got their last one they made being sold straight from the owners of New wave Toys during E3.... When I was about to leave work, Peter one of the co-founders text me that they have found one last Centipede in the car and if I wanted it to hit him up ASAP... No shit, of course I ran the hell over there with an awe.... brand new box and all and because they went to the trouble to give me their last Centipede as they will not make anymore of them, I bought their last Tempest cabinets they had left there.... One I display and the other I keep in its box brand new for the future! You have to see these in person to realized how exactly I always wanted someone to make them at such a small scale soo close to the original arcades! They are the only once that have delivered that and no other comes close!

      @TristaBytes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    My first favourite Arcade game followed by Street Fighter 1 (yes 1, not 2), seems cute enough as a gimmik to sit on a shelf, did you have to ask / request for a free machine from NewWave?!,...as I can't see how they could afford just sending freebies of this kind half way round the world, it would surly cause them big money losses.

    Tempest 2000 was probably my most played Jaguar game. I, too, had dreams about the game, specifically the bonus stages. Weirdly the other game that got played a lot was "White Men Can't Jump"... and I have NO idea why - it's awful! :P

      Any other games that caused dreams? I had a particularly trippy session playing Tetris Worlds on PS2, that ended up with the weirdest of dreams that can only be described as drug-fueled. Nothing but falling blocks and the weird whispering of "Go for a square"... "Tetris"... "Level up!", etc. XD
