georgert Copy that. Strange that a 50 year old song, that you listened to during something you got over a long time, still makes you feel as cappy as it did 50 years ago. But I still keep going back, coz it's still a great song.
I just lost my best friend, my love, my soulmate last night. so today i came to your video to play this song again and noticed your screen name...Sirsurfalot. well, my David was a surfer. i went to Matunuck RI today and waves were 15 feet! He would have loved that and enjoyed this video....it fit him, it fit us. Strange that your video would come to me at this time. meant to be i guess. thank you.
There's always that one painfull love this song reminds you of. No matter how many lovers before or how many after, there will always be that special one you think of and deeply miss when the room is dark.💔
Yes - me too. It was visiting MA from NM; it was in a little old church. I got to talk to him back stage after the show - he's a gentleman as well as a great singer/songwriter.
@@Oh_I_Will Just as I said, most people know nothing about the activities of the Spirit and only a bit more about the characteristics of the soul. Many don't even believe there is such a thing and will have wait until death to find out.Unfortunately by then it will be too late. They should have looked harder while they were alive.
Hi. Thanks for commenting. I saw a need for this because the video is here on YT with poorer sound so I bought the song on itunes and added it to the video. The whole album is there, with not as good a quality audio as a CD, let alone the vinyl it was made to be played on, but better than nothing I suppose.
This is one of my favorite songs. First heard it back in 1968. Still in H.S. This was the time of Maddy. First time I ever got drunk over a girl. Got drunk over her lots more times, well into my freshman year at university. But, she was also the person who got me to go on the wagon, before I became a full blown alcoholic. You gotta love someone a lot to get drunk over her a lot, but you gotta love someone even a lot more to stop drinking in order to please her, as she walked away for good. At least this was one time when my people pleasing skills (which Claudia seemed to think was a negative trait of mine, among so many others), led to something good in my life. Now, I can't even remember to drink one glass of red wine each day (which supposedly is good for one's health).
His greatest song. One of my favorite performers who I've seen several times. Always request this song leading into Rockport Sunday as on Classic Rush album. Incredible!!
Just wonderful - one of of my favourite and saddest songs of all time . We all know he did have loads of regrets !!!!! brilliantly expressed by Tom. Very moving. Brian
herd this song years ago .... touches me like Very few songs do.. don,t know why.........i request it when ever i see a one man guitar player @ a bar...most are surprised i knew this song ..they always play if they can !!!
I've seen Tom many times, first was a free concert at U Mass in 1969-70. In Boston a lot. He always had other musicians with him, Bonnie R. to Bo Diddley.
A just becoming older-teen-young-adult longing for what I didn't even know. Tom Rush and his music. The same today as always. The same today as years ago. His voice and harmonics haunt me even today.
a song for letting go of the past. some things work out, others don't and that's okay. its okay to cry, but remember that tomorrow is a new day with new friends, new loves, and new adventures on the horizon. Sometimes you've just got to let the old man go. No Regrets indeed!
here we are, it is 17 January 2021. The Guard fills DC. Knee deep in egg shells, we wander on seeking old friends. Tom Rush, you count you matter in many lives...thank you
Most welcome. Your comment has the ring of truth about it as not many people are aware of this song these days...I hope it isn't true though! "No good thing ever dies" according to Tom Waits.
Yeah - what an album! Too many memories, almost - to make it possible to listen. But oh man those years were wonderful and filled with some amazing people. Then she left & my friends tried to help...
I saw him do a concert at Stonehill College in MA back when I was 18, a very, very long time ago -- LOL! He played this song, and I knew I would always love his music! Thanks so much for posting!!
I was there that night. It was 1976 or 77. It was the first time I ever saw him. I saw him 18 more times after that and have tix to see him in Plymouth in August.
I love Tom Rush singing this song. His is the best version ever - even better than the Walker Bros more famous version, in my opinion. Thanks for putting this up. :)
No worries. I agree, it is the best version. Usually the songwriter's own take can't be beat I reckon, even if they don't have a pretty voice. But in this case he has a wonderful voice too.
aefa40 So totally agree with you. I first heard this in 1981, by Harry Belafonte, but found this best and original version thanks to a comment on a Walker Brothers clips. So beautiful, so sad.
I just saw Tom In San Diego a few weeks ago (for the fifth or sixth time?). It doesn't get better than that, and I work for the concert series and see a lot great acts all the time. His live version of this song blows away anything I've seen or heard online. I mean it was absolutely incredible. This guy plays tricks with your ears, your head, or something. I can't wait to see him again next year. Very few people in the world can hold an audience for the whole evening as a soloist.
TH-cam should be more like Pandora where artist gets a small royalty for each play. I listen to Pandora and am glad and grateful to know the artist gets a small royalty like on radio. I believe it's covered under the Digital Millennium Act. (I have musician friends.) Occasional commercial on Pandora is not intrusive at all, and everyone wins with that system: the listener, the artist, Pandora, and the advertiser. I want my favorite artists compensated for their work where it is enjoyed. Rob
Lee Hazlewood does a wonderful version of this song (circa 69), and Dean Wareham of LUNA fame does a more recent (rocked up) version too. Check them both out!
I always loved the Walkers Brothers version until I started learning to play this song on the guitar. Now I must admit I much prefer Tom Rush,s version, took a long time but I got there.
Thanks for sharing that with us. Perhaps it was only a coincidence however your soul must be finely attuned to the realities of life and its passing at present so that it is more likely to pick up on any moments of seeming coincidence such as these in a strong soul stirring way. But: "Death is a messenger of joy...The world beyond is as different from this world as this world is different from that of the child while still in the womb of its mother..." The souls of the next world still see us.
I used to have this album[bought it at the local record store or maybe a hardware store-we know those days are gone,laugh]...anyhow,it's a real work of art...Who was the drummer on the song?-one of the best grooves I've ever heard...
Mr R. uses an altered tuning - (open G?) do you also? I'm trying to play it in concert tuning. G sounds best to me. I am so hungry to learn this song and play it well - I've loved it from the day I first heard it. You know I'd love to hear Kotke play this.
His album "The Circle Game" containing this track and three excellent Joni Mitchell covers, especially Urge For Going has recently been reissued at a bargain price.
When played it for Judy Collins she did not say anything, so he though she did not like it. It was his first real song. It is more talking than singing, and it does not seem so good to me at first hearing. But every journey starts with a first step, and this must have been it.
+stephen dwyer Rubbish my arse. I must admit I haven't heard the Walker Bros. version yet, but Tom wrote it and he sings it beautifully and the musicians play perfectly with a perfect arrangement and production. So don't you dare diss Tom. Now about those Walker Brothers.... Maybe later if I have time.
No probs...Saw a gap on YT and tried to fill it...I prefer Scott too, particularly his later weirder stuff (although I don't listen to it much for some reason) but this is a beautiful period piece, maybe even transcends its time like all great songs can do.

I’m not.hearing either one of you right now...I’m listening to this album
It's ok . I'll listen again I think this n maybe one or two other tracks r good. Fred Neil is the real deal of this style
This album and song came out in 1968.
I still have my copy. I’m 73, and still listen to it.
It’s always been one of my number one albums but I am a child of the 60s peace man❤
Love this song. But I can only listen to it every once in a long while. Too many memories.
I certainly understand ... me too

Wow Wow From a 75yo Aussie fan. What a great song
sung by a fantastic singer/ songwriter.
one of the songs of youth and lost love--never forget.....never loose this
Recently discovered Tom's original...can't stop listening...beautiful❤
I've seen him do this live. One of the best nights ever.
Yes - me too. It was visiting MA from NM; it was in a little old church. I got to talk to him back stage after the show - he's a gentleman as well as a great singer/songwriter.
This song pierces my soul and ignites my spirit rekindling old memories.

Not sure if you should blame someone for you drinking? Everything is our choice in life.
Good luck! 🍀

My favorite song, and a hauntingly poignant video go accompany it! Thank you!
So much feeling in this song. The arrangement is just perfect.
I hadn't played this in 30 years after I lost my original vinyl album. It is absolutely magnificent, just like I remembered it.
This guy's guitar sound is so unique and magnificent. I love it.
Ah yes,way back, from the era of great songwriters who's works will unfortunately,be lost in musical history...one of the best. Thanks for this.

The artist, let alone the LP, let alone this version of the song, needs to be better known. Thanks for uploading.
The video matches perfectly to the mood of this touching song. Can't stop hearing it over and over again.
