ARTESIAN WELL TEMPORARY WINTER FIX

  • We are winterizing our artesian well - it's a temporary fix, but it will do for now!
We have discovered that our artesian well is currently seasonally artesian. This means that during the summer the level drops lower than the top of the well head (and doesn't flow out), but during winter, spring, and fall it is overflowing. We learned that allowing it to overflow is not a good idea because it runs down along the pipe/well casing and into the ground causing potential weathering of the pipe and erosion of the surrounding soil. Without a permanent solution, we are creating a temporary fix for the winter - ie. winterizing it!
We have a lot of ideas for a permanent solution but have not decided exactly what as of yet.

Nice quick fix. Winter brings on all sorts of issues. I was lucky to get my main chores done the day before a snow storm...LOL. Is there no way to seal the well. Or would that cause freezing in the pipe? Maybe a slow drip will stop freezing....Winter the joy ...lol.

We were actually told that as long as it’s flowing it won’t freeze. We’ll see!

If you used a large hose clamp or an extra large zip-tie to hold the tarp higher up the pipe the water would not pool or drip anywhere near the pump head. Even where that collar is would likely be enough.

Can you draw a hole partway up the pipe and attach another pipe as an overflow and that way you can run away from your well?
