Okay, something important to bear in mind with the server issues. Helldivers 1 had like, a peak of 7000 players at once. Helldivers 2 has absolutely shattered that, and rather than hiring and firing server techs, they're taking the time to tune up the servers themselves because they think (correctly) that the practice is horrible for the new hires. These devs are basically trying to take a car that barely handles the highway and make it race in Formula 1, and they're managing to succeed.
It's like seeing a Yugo outdo a Formula 1 racecar while blindfolded. It shouldn't be possible, it was designed to be impossible, and yet it's clearly possible.
Remember to give your engineers a cup of coffee and a snack every so often. They're some of the backend heroes in gaming. They are fueled by coffee and impossibility.
I've heard that it's not just a server issue but the whole backend wasn't designed for such a high load. However, it's obvious (especially if you join their discord) that they are working really hard at fixing any issue we come across. I've even seen the CEO of Arrowhead today there, somebody had the "stuck staring at ship" issue that should've been fixed with today's patch, so he talked to them and said he'll talk with the team about it. Love to see that.

Now they have to redesign their back-end with only 4 people in record time. Horrible decisions in development with great reactionary patch coding from those 4 people to get 450k user stable-ish on what they have. It should never have happened as this is an entirely different type of game from their first one and they should have expected more players. Not to dis them, but the first game is like COD arcade zombies with objectives, of course not a lot of people will play it.

This game is basically Starship Troopers with a 1984 background world with a little bit of 40k thrown in for flavor. I love the first game and the second one is shaping up to be amazing.
Just a reminder that this game is made on a now discarded engine that wasnt updated since 2018. Yet it has better effects and cape physics than in Unreal 4 and 5 with less money and people than most of developers out there (which kinda shows in the uoptimization and netcode, but I was primarily talking about visuals)
I mean, the netcode *was* optimized to accommodate more players than the devs ever thought would play the game (250k) but the game just won the success lottery and now there are 400k+ concurrent players on steam alone

And even if it has clear signs of Live Service game, these elements are not soring (is that even a word?) your eyes and you can play without ever knowing these elements are there. And it's style and clear inspiration is what pulled people in. You think Among Us, Lethal Company and etc. had a random success chance? Probably, but their orientation on cooperative non-comptetitive gameplay, but still having an ability to mess with friends is what pulled people in, because guess what, people want more coop games with good interaction range than just a static 100+ multiplayer game.

I think each server "instance" can accommodate 4 players since you join someone and they host the entire lobby. So joining on them bypasses the need for you to wait for one to be allocated to just you.@@amemnon7859

Btw, there is actually a thing where if you teamkill enough, the devs will find out and mark you a rogue helldiver who has committed treason. Turns out it was taken out of context cuz the team attacked him off camera and laid the blame on him when he retaliated. Regardless, I love that the devs are interacting

Luckily they added an afk timer so people who were clogging the servers and never logging out got kicked. Never had login troubles after that.
