    One of the things I still love about this film surprisingly is the lack of blood. Unlike with all the other films of this genre (they didn't call them slasher flicks for no reason), this gets to you with suspense and doesn't just rely on all the gore someone can fit into an hour and a half movie.

    • @80sNewWaveGeek
      @80sNewWaveGeek 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Those masks were seriously claustrophobic. Plus, if you think about it, Myers was sitting and staring at/past the asylum wall for 15 years. I'd think with those two things to deal with, he definitely should've dropped dead from fatigue after terrorizing Nurse Marion when he was on top of the car. haha

    You asked the one question John Carpenter tried to answer with this movie. What happens when you encounter someone who kills for no reason at all? The sequels tried to add reasons for Michael's killing instinct, but it's just more scary when you think there is something out there in the darkness waiting to kill you while you take out the trash.

      @83shadow3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thats why John Carpenter only intended Michael Myers to be in the first movie one and done. So you don't get any answers for anything everything remains a mystery. But the movie studio made Halloween 2 about Michael Myers. John Carpenter had no say in it and he only worked on it for two reasons one he was under contract and two he figured he'd get paid actually because he already got paid for this movie. Because he knew you would have to give an explanation to why he's targeting people if there was a sequel. John Carpenter never wanted to do that but he was forced to when the movie studio made Halloween 2 about Michael Myers. Because he actually would have to give a reason to why he is targeting people constantly.

    • @stevenoconnor3256
      @stevenoconnor3256 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@83shadow3 Human motivations tend to have more complex reasonings behind their actions, rob's Halloween would essentially be the most realistic as it gives him a backstory to explain his actions or Halloween 6 with the thorn cult. Actually the original implies a lot of connection to his sister. He literally just repeats himself.
      He kills these girls on the same night as his sister
      They're all the same age as her
      Watches them
      They're doing the same things as she was
      Steals her tombstone from the graveyard, sets it behind the girl he killed.
      John is just mad he was made to write it, 2 feels most like a natural continuation then all the others.

    • @83shadow3
      @83shadow3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stevenoconnor3256 Thats why John Carpenter intended it to be one and done with Michael Myers no sequels nothing no answers. Because he wanted it to be a complete mystery to why he did what he did what part of that don't you understand. But if you have sequels you have to put reasoning behind it but if it's one and done you do not. You are left just never knowing what happened next or why that happened in the first place and that's what John Carpenter was going for in Halloween. With Michael Myers someone escapes a mental facility stalks and kills people. Then he just disappears you don't know where he is what he's doing why he did it in the first place. That was John Carpenter's idea it's simple enough to understand. The sequels ruined that by trying to explain things. Then Rob zombies remake making it more realistic that's fine because that is the story Rob Zombie wanted to tell. But John Carpenter story is about Michael Myers being someone that snaps and starts killing people and escapes a mental institution and kills people. Then he seems to be human but not human as John Carpenter described Michael Myers. Basically Michael Myers is pure evil a supernatural Force a force of nature. John Carpenter wanted to make Michael Myers completely unhuman as possible. Thats why he wears a mask so you can't see his human face that's why he wears beggy overalls so you can't see any human form all you see is beggy overalls. All you see is his hands other than that there's no nothing that looks human. In the script or screenplay Michael Myers name is not even in it if you look at the end credits he is just called The Shape. On the call Sheets it says The Shape so John Carpenter even left his name out of the credits and out of the script except for a few times when Dr Loomis is talking about him. So clearly John Carpenter's intention was to completely dehumanize Michael Myers. So he never wanted to explain his motivation or explain if he was even human or not human. Rob Zombie did his own thing it was his own take on the character you can't compare the two. That's like comparing a banana to Apple they are two different characters two different things. Just like in the future someone could make Michael Myers with five heads that's there take on Michael Myers.

    • @83shadow3
      @83shadow3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevenoconnor3256 Thats because John Carpenter wrote Halloween 2 and he intended to kill off Michael Myers permanently. End of story no more Michael Myers ever again but the movie studio interfered again with Halloween 3. Basic version I have the Shout Factory collectors edition of Halloween 3 Season of the With. In the audio commentary only with Tommy Lee Wallace he explains. Its called Halloween 3 Season of the Witch because the movie studio seen the script with the name Season of the witch they read it they knew it had nothing to do with Michael Myers. Because it was written as a completely separate movie to nothing to do with the Halloween movie franchise or Michael Myers from the beginning. The movie studio approved of that script but told them we will only fund it if you call it Halloween 3. If you call it Season of the Witch we will not fund the movie. So both John Carpenter and Tommy Lee Wallace would have preferred to just call it Season of the Wich. But the movie studio would not fund the movie with that name so they had no choice but to call it Halloween 3 in order to get it made.
      Thats why when the movie studio said we are bringing back Michael Myers in the next movie that being Halloween 4. John Carpenter's response was he sold his shares in that movie franchise and walked away. Because he was done with Michael Myers after the first movie the movie studio made Halloween 2 about Michael Myers. The movie studio made them call Season of the Witch clearly a separate movie from the start and should have been a separate movie. Halloween 3 or they were never going to fund it so John Carpenter scene the movie studio was obsessed with Michael Myers. Everything was going to be Michael Myers and attached to the Halloween movie franchise regardless of the movie. He left because he wanted to do other things other than Michael Myers that's why Jamie Lee Curtis left because she wanted to do other things other than movies with Michael Myers.

    Donald Pleasance was fantastic (in the final scene, he suggested to Carpenter two different takes: one where Loomis is totally shocked to find Michael's body isn't there in the yard, and one where he isn't shocked at all). Though I would have loved to have seen Christopher Lee as Loomis (he turned the role down, later said it was one of the decisions he most regretted), that would have been awesome too.

    There’s a whole documentary on the making of Halloween. It’s called Halloween: A Cut Above The Rest. It was hilarious because their budget was so tight that they had to wear their own clothes and they were filming in California so they had to keep reusing garbage bags of fall colored leaves to throw on the ground to make it look like fall.

    • @christinegelabert1651
      @christinegelabert1651 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @C Flournoy YUP! People sometimes make fun of this movie and they call it cheesy because it's just a different generation. BUT with a lot of these older movies there was so much work put into this because it was not the option of CGI! Many times people just said you know what I'll give up half my pay just to finish a project. Nowadays it seems like nobody wants to give up their pay and they're working less because the computers are doing it for them and you don't get the same quality work and the movie wants half the amount of time but not a lot of backstory. To me it just seems like a lot of corner cutting with the CGI. Also it doesn't train your eyes the right way because your eyes know instinctively compared to the real world that's not what you're really seeing. It's almost like way back when they first started with the 3D movies and the glasses. What bothers me is that there's a whole generation that accepts CGI as a reality version of the movies. They don't understand the nuances of shading and true mood lighting was involved. I remember as I'm pretty sure that you do when the company FX first hit REALLY BIG in the industry. Now of course they've expanded to other things. But once they establish themselves in the beginning they want to go to people and the stellar example everybody wanted to be in the movie business. I'm somebody who's watched many different versions and directors cuts, and overseas versions of movies on VCR, DVD, and you might remember LASERDISCS??? I've got a friend who was an independent filmmaker in a past life after he graduated from the Film Academy in NYC. Well I have to say is it's a different experience when you go to the movie with Ed. The deal is you get your snacks first and you will not to say a word or even breathe strange at any point during the movie okay? SHHHHH! NO TALKING! He get psychotic, it spins his head around like the exorcist if other people in another row start talking. I just like creep myself down in the seat like oh man...I just know if they don't STFU? HE'S going to say something like really bad today's clowns soon and it'll be a scene in here going off! I've known him a little over 20 years and believe me there's been a few times with these challenge people to step outside if they don't STFU and let him and the rest of the theater enjoy their movie "CUZ NOT FOR NOTHING BUDDY...EVERYBODY'S PAID FOR THIS DAMMIT! ITS NOT ALL THE EFF ABOUT YOU!" Yeah, sometimes going to the movie with him it's an experience but it's not his fault. He makes fun of me because of how violent I can be. BUT he's the first one to get loud I'LL just move my seat like a normal human being ok? IF I take too long adjusting my jacket will move my purse he gives me a dirty look... Like listen relax your little Spidey senses who can tell if somebody's taking tissue out of that price 30 rolls back. I'm working on it they haven't even gotten through the trailers yet. Just try tocontain yourself! The movie isn't over until we've seen who the KEY GRIP is let's put it that way. LOL! 😂

    Amongst all the other brilliance in this film, one thing I don't see first-time viewers mention is the night time lighting. Dean Cundey, who ended up later being cinematographer on a little movie called Jurassic Park, lit this movie so incredibly, and John Carpenter's shot composition and framing is so incredible, that there are so many scenes in this you could freeze frame and make into a poster.
    All those shots from across the street where Tommy looks out the window and sees Michael's silhouette, or that scene at the top of the stairs when Laurie is sobbing and Michael appears out of the darkness, just stunning. And you can tell when you start to compare it to lesser horror movies that would come later. Go look at the lighting of horror movies from the 90s and see what I mean, they over light so even in what's supposed to be absolute darkness it's still bright blue light, it's really an enormous difference once you start to see it.

    • @Powerranger-le4up
      @Powerranger-le4up 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s actually easier than you think with the latter because they simply gradually lit up the lighting making it like your eyes are adjusting to a dark room.

    One of the great things about these older, slower paced horror movies is that you never really see the monster. It's always quick flickers of something, or hidden in shadows. That lets your imagination fill in the gaps, and your imagination is always far more terrifying than whatever a film could show you. Alien was the same way.
    Now it's usually just boring splatter flicks that aren't scary, they're just gross.

    Halloween is my favorite horror movie. I'm gonna watch it this month at some point (as I do every year).
    I'm actually a big proponent of the interpretation of the movie where Laurie isn't the target (obviously the sequel comes along and spoils that, but if you view the first movie in isolation, it makes sense). Michael had no interest in Laurie. He followed her briefly in the opening act, and it seems - because we're seeing almost the whole movie from Laurie's point of view - that he's hyper focused on her (he follows the kid, too, but shows no further interest in him once his curiosity is satisfied. In a deleted scene, he's also shown to be following around Laurie's other friends). But the moment they arrive at the houses in the evening, he ignores Laurie and goes after Annie. Annie is the one he stalks all night, and she's the one that he puts under his sister's grave to reconstruct his first kill. And then he just hangs out in the house; the only other people he goes after are those who make the mistake of going to the house. Indeed, Michael is passively following people around and his first overtly aggressive act against the girls doesn't occur until Annie shouts at him and he hard breaks his car. Which might very well have been what set off his homicidal rage.
    If he was interested in Laurie, he had a long time to head over there and kill her. But he didn't. He ignored her until she came over to the house, and then he chased her. We just make the mistake of thinking he's more interested in Laurie because she's the protagonist. And, retroactively, because the plot of the other movies changes Michael's purpose. However, viewed in isolation, the only person Michael seems to be consistently interested in killing is Annie.

    • @LA_HA
      @LA_HA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, this "Annie is the true target" fan theory has been making the rounds for a while and it's cute 'n all. But, we all know that he's saw Laurie Strode first, stalked her all movie, and killed everyone Around/close to her because she was the best being saved for last. You don't eat dessert first. You start with the hors d'oeuvres, then the soup, the entree, and Then you finish with the dessert at the end of the night.
      Who was that whole presentation in the upstairs bedroom for? It wasn't for Loomis.
      Laurie Strode is the target

    • @seraphinaaizen6278
      @seraphinaaizen6278 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@LA_HA "But, we all know that he's saw Laurie Strode first, stalked her all movie, and killed everyone Around/close to her because she was the best being saved for last."
      Again: We only have that interpretation because we see the movie through the lens of Laurie's point of view.
      We know from the deleted scene where Lynda shows up at Laurie's house that Michael was following her, too. And even if we exclude that scene, he DIDN'T follow Laurie all movie. He follows her for a few hours in the opening act of the film (he also briefly follows Tommy, so even in the final cut of the movie he isn't only showing interest in Laurie), but on the night of Halloween itself he shows no interest in Laurie whatsoever. It's ALL Annie.
      He doesn't stalk Laurie on the night. He stalks Annie. Exclusively. He follows her around, watches her for hours and then finally kill her and stages and elaborate ritual involving his sister's grave.
      Lynda, Bob and Laurie are incidental. He makes no move to pursue Lynda (indeed, if Lynda hadn't come to the house then she would have lived through the night; so what was he waiting around the house for after he killed Annie? Why didn't he immediately head over to start stalking Laurie at that point if she really was the target?), and the only time he even approaches the Doyle house is when Annie goes there to drop off Lindsey. Other than that, his only concern is the house where Annie is.
      If Laurie hadn't happened to have been on the phone when Michael killed Lynda, then there's no reason why she would have gone over to the house where Michael was waiting. Michael didn't plan that.
      "Who was that whole presentation in the upstairs bedroom for? It wasn't for Loomis."
      No, it was for Michael. He was attempting to recreate his first kill by killing Annie, and the other deaths were incidental. So he just stuffed their corpses into the same room.
      On the night of Halloween Michael shows no interest whatsoever in Laurie until she came where he was. The only reason people interpret the movie as Laurie being the main target is because a) she is the protagonist and so people just assume she's the main target and b) because the sequels frame it that way.
      But it makes no sense in the context of the movie, and people have to invent this absurd notion of Michael using her friends as appetizers in order to hand wave away the fact that he shows no interest in her whatsoever for the majority of the film.
