Since I dropped out of college, I wish I could learn from you. Many people in society especially in a southern state like Texas, where I live, pressure me to go to college but in reality, college is expensive and some of the professors and advisors are very unsupportive. I'm not the only experiencing this especially since I found your channel. Thank you for your words of wisdom.
I agree, I had to become the teacher for myself. I did not have a mentor. So I imagined what my designer path would be like, if I was an educator. That is my goal with creating these videos. Thank you and good luck.
It is indeed possible to be a graphic designer without a degree (although it could be tougher), heck I even started my graphic design career not even being able to step in college (bcuz life is too tough already). Didn't think I have a talent in this career, started working as stock clerk from a retail store and later on it piqued my curiosity on designs I see everywhere wondering how it is possible to make them. I think my adaptability on the situation, sheer will, determination and hunger to learn is my only drive that leads me here being able to land in this career. Though I'm still planning to start my college because, through my hard and tough experience, I now believe that the fundamentals and basics taught from school is very essential to kick start a career in life.
I failed a couple of classes and cannot continue my degree right now. Struggling with the failure but looking forward to building my craft in other ways thank you for the inspiration!
Great video, Dave. Loved it. Would be great if you could share some of those resources you mentioned…would help for self studies. Please do share if its possible😊
Hi, don’t worry too much about it right now. AI programs like midjourney are crazy. If you have an understanding of design fundamentals and are able to tell a story and connect with people, that personal touch will go a long way. People will want to work with YOU, because of you.
I did not reach out, my internship did and gave me the project to help on. If you are a fan of a company or brand, go to their shop, location, or website, call them directly, or email them. If they say no, at least they know about you, should they need your help in the future.
hi dave! loved the video. I wanted to ask that my drawing skills are not really that great. can i still try being a graphic designer.. i mean i can draw but I lack in imagination.. would I develop creativity once i start the journey of a graphic designer? and pls be honest lol! I would not mind a no 😬😁
You don't have to be good at drawing. To me graphic design is curation, you know how to piece ideas together that serve a purpose. Drawing is a little more important if someone is seeking your style in particular. I have been drawing for about 20 years, but 3 years professionally.
When starting to learn design, where did you first start? Did you learn the principles first or just scribble with your sketchpad? Or already know what you like and instead do graphic design by creating logos, mockups, illustration, etc?? When you said you dropped out in 2013, what course did you get? is it related on design?? Please help, im stuck. I love to purse graphic design but i am only focusing on learning adobe softwares first. Is it okay? Or should i also learn how to draw and such? I've got 2 months left before graduating and im thinking of shifting a career.
When I started in 2013, I learned Adobe Illustrator by creating logos and artwork, stickers, t-shirt graphics, and things I was interested in. I then learned Adobe InDesign because I wanted to make a short magazine because I liked photography and I learned how to layout type and images together. You don't need to be the best at drawing. I use references when I am working on a project with a specific look or branding.
@@hellodavem yooo thank you so much!! I didn't know u would still reply to this point ❤️🙏 i may work on illustrator first, then. I thought photoshop would do much of the work tho. But thanks for the direction man!! ❤️

There are so many lessons school can teach you. Good to hear that you are adapting and finding what works for you.

Yea Real artist doesn't even need a degree
They need a passion and consistent for it
Are there any online courses, or TH-cam courses that helped with that? In an integrated way that encompasses everything?
What is the best laptop or apple you recommend ?
Hello, I love your portfolio, which platform have you used to create it ?
I used a simple theme from squarespace

What college is this ? I also live in Hawaii and Id love to study graphic design
Kapiolani Community College, New Media Arts, that program and instructors were great
are you on behance ?
No my work is not on there, I'm redoing my portfolio website
but how are you getting clients is my point ?
Right now it's mostly word of mouth, I'm not doing outreach at the moment because I'm updating my services.
