    Hey everyone! I'm really enjoying doing these weekly mini-lesson vids for you - hope you're all enjoying them too. Here's a quick lesson on my favourite chord progression, the I - IVm. This sound changed my life when I first heard it without even knowing anything about music or having picked up a guitar. Years later, it's still my favourite sound in all of harmony. You'll find the backing track I was improvising over in the video description - leave a comment down below with any questions, lesson requests etc and if you want to support me, feel free to check out the links for all my lesson content and my app Solo. Have fun and happy practicing - Tom.

      I had the same experience as a kid! What a sound. There are so many ways to twist the iv minor using inversions, other roots, various extensions, etc.. A few favourites you're no doubt familiar with:
      iim9b5
      bVII13(#11)
      bVImaj7(#5)
      Happy to see these weekly lessons and I'll be working with the backing track this week 🙏

      Thanks for the lesson. I have made much progress with melodic minor and hybrid picking thanks to your Melodic Minor pdf and TH-cam videos. Great stuff.

    You broke my heart with the reference to that movie. One of my favorite ever, for a lot of reasons really but, for sure, for melodies in it. Over 30 years later I recognize I didn’t got anything about the harmonic structure of that beautiful beautiful sequence of the movie. Thank you Tom, I’ll work on this progression as soon as I can grab the wood! 👍

    Tom thank you for sharing these great insights. I think the fascinating thing about your demo is that Fmaj to Bbmin could have also been perceived as a V - Im rather than I - IVm, but you are making it sound like the latter by your note choices. It is just amazing! In fact, I'm now curious about how you would have sounded like if you were thinking Bbmin is your home, and Fmaj as being the tense, dominant sound.

    I fell in love with this chord sequence when learning a jazz tune “A Child is Born” by Thad Jones.
    Another tune is “Reasons” by EWF.
    That one is a Maj7 raising each note a semitone keeping the bass the same.
    Basically the same as a IV minor. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Tom.

    Such a beautiful melancholic progression. The first time I heard this kind of chord progression was in John Petrucci’s Rock Discipline. I think it’s called Gemini, from his solo album Terminal Velocity.

    we can think of the IV Minor as the fourth interval of the harmonic major scale / or the min 6 interval of the harmonic minor scale. Yet, the melodic minor approach sounds much more pleasing.

    Amazing lesson! Tom - the same way this non-diatonic progression spoke to you as a child, I had the same reaction to a Minor 1 chord to a minor 6 chord. Are there any interesting scale types you would use over that?

    Somehow reminds me of Spaghetti Western theme music with a healthy helping of jazz influence. Really useful great sounding and good on the ear information. Gorgeous legato there. Where is the TQ Album? Great to hear some of your history. I see you are using the AXE FX III and what looks like an IRT Studio SLS powered but there are more things powered, Laney Cub, Boss Expander . Just starting using my SLS with the Axe FX III. A great combo.

    @sixmillionaccountssilenced6721 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    How about using the mode of harmonic major - Bb Lydian b3? It's the same notes as Bb melodic minor except Eb -> E so now you have your major seventh of F which isn't there in Bb melodic minor (contains F7, not Fmaj7).

    Does Bb melodic minor or Bb melodic minor with a #4 sounds better to you? The #4 maintains the diatonic 7th note of the original key, while the #4 gives the sound of b7. Which could highlight the progression better in this context?

    That's how I use it too! So over the minor 4 do you use specific modes of the melodic minor of intervals of the chord? For example over the 7 of that chord, you'd do super locrian?

  • @jaltsch1
    @jaltsch1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Dorian with raised 7th works better in my brain than major with b3 for MM.

  • @Falestal
    @Falestal 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hmm.... The IV chord in Mel.Minor is a 7th chord with a raised 4th ex. F7#11. The Lydian Dominant scale? Or are you plaing the Ionian scale on the I (lets say it´s a C chord) and the Mel.minor on the IVm chord (F Mel.minor)? As in C Mixolydian b13?
    Great playing! Thanks for the upload:)
